Self awareness is actively seeking to understand oneself through introspection also known as “Look Inside” or the “inner spy”. When we are self-aware we are better able to understand, manage and regulate our emotions, be more confident, have better relationships with others and feel simply happier.

Here are some ways you can practise and improve self-awareness:

Self-Awareness exercise/questions to ask yourself in a journal or email to yourself:

  1. Describe yourself in three words.

  2. Ask yourself if your personality has changed since childhood.

  3. What qualities do you most admire in yourself?

  4. What is your biggest weakness?

  5. What is your biggest strength?

  6. What do you care about most in life?

  7. What things scare you?

Participation question:

How self-aware do you feel you are?

When do you feel most connected with your own unique identity?

@amiablePeace77 Thanks for this thread lots of good info.

How self-aware do you feel you are? I do not know how to call that. I know I am more self aware than I was in the past. But is there even an objective standard to judge by?

When do you feel most connected with your own unique identity? I am most comfortable with myself when I accept others the way they are.

I am most comfortable when others when I accept myself the way I am.

@soulsings

Good that you can accept yourself as you are. I believe when we accept ourselves we behave differently and are perceived differently (better) by others.

@amiablePeace77 I think I am extremely self-aware. I am too self-aware in my opinion 😂 I think way too much and I am very connected to my emotions. I wish I could detach sometimes, but I guess there are positives to be aware. I know what I need from myself to feel better and I can advocate for myself very well. 💛 I would say I feel most connected to my unique identity when I am surrounded with my friends! I feel most comfortable and relaxed when I am socializing. ❤️

Sometimes being too self aware can end up being also very harsh with ourselves. Good though that you know what you need to feel better and find comfort with being surrounded by friends.

@amiablePeace77 Oh yeah I definitely am my own worst critic and it can be very difficult at times to handle, but I always try to reframe my thinking and remind myself that I am doing my best when I am feeling this way ❤️ Thank you!

To know ourselves gives us clarity to also understand others I've heard it said. Also treatment of others is a reflection of how we treat ourselves. Important to pay attention to our inner voices, how they help or hinder us, support or criticize. ❤ Thanks for posting!

Good point about to pay attention to our inner voices! They define what we think and what we think defines how we get through the day. When I have supportive self talk the daily challenges seem to be so much easier!

I always have that "question answer" chat with myself like "ok what are we feeling?" Then carry out a conversation with myself, like how a parent listens to a child to help them process. That also carries over to how we active listen, internal support skills define our external, I just love that comparison so much, a theme for all of us. ❤ Best to you friend!
