Benefits of contrast showers

No matter how mentally healthy, resilient, or happy we are, every one of us goes through times when we need to cope with something difficult. Knowing a variety of activities or things to have can make a big difference and get us through the day and ensure a good night’s sleep.

Something I was taught by my doctor as a teen when struggling with sleep issues is to do contrast showers (hot/cold showers) 1 or 2 hours before bedtime.

In what way do showers give you relief and are you showering only cold or warm or have you tried contrast showers?

Contrast showers have been shown to boost the immune system to help prevent and fight off common illnesses like colds and flu but they can also help with sleep problems. All you need is a shower with the ability to rapidly switch temperatures between hot and cold, and a dry towel. It's best to alternate between hot and cold for three to four cycles:

  • HOT phase: turn the temperature up as hot as tolerable for two to three minutes

  • COLD phase: turn the temperature down very cold for 15 seconds

Always end on COLD, and briskly dry off with a towel when finished.

@amiablePeace77 Thanks for sharing.

Please be careful with hot water, if the water is too hot, you could burn yourself, and we do not want you or anyone to get hurt.

So please be mindful of this.

I practice contrast showers. It's funny because I knew how they helped on overall health but didn't know for the sleeping part.

I never take hot showers because of my condition (I faint in heat/standing for too long) but either take contrast showers or cold showers.

@WhenTheTimeComes

Hot showers can be overstimulating so contrast showers will not do that. Nice that you already practise them. Another thing I was told is that taking contrast showers in the morning can also help with morning sadness/lack of motivation.

I definitely so so much better after a contrast shower than a hot shower, but I feel almost as good after a cold shower. Almost is because the contrast shower gives me some time with hot water which makes me feel cleaner than a cold shower, so it's usually a favourite of mine :)

I feel so too that hot water cleans better, wonder whether it is because warm/hot water opens the pores? But with the contrast showers you have the benefits of both cold and hot water 😊
