Far too many teens and young adults are struggling with their mental health: In 2024, a quarter of young people ages 10 to 24 said they did not feel supported by family, 45% reported struggling with their mental health within the past two years, and 29% had engaged in or considered self-harm, according to the Youth Mental Health Tracker (YMHT), a study released last month by Surgo Health.

Seeking Help

Mental stress can cause us not to be able to see the good things in life and lead to excessive rumination or worries which can result in serious health problems. If you have serious, long-term problems with negative thinking and feeling depressed, see your doctor or talk to a therapist if they are related to any mental challenges.

How is mental health challenging you at this time?

Mental health has been really important to me especially at this time/age. It has been challenging in many ways. It can be hard to deal with a mental illness. Recovery is slow. And it can be hard to accept the mental illness.

Do you have a young family member, or do you know a student who is struggling with mental health?

Yes, there are many students I know have some sort of mental illness.

How can we as a society help young people more to deal with today’s stressors?

Students can be helped by giving them more workshops which allows them to be aware of what they are going through as well as learn to accept their mental illness

@Admirablerainbow2825

I'm glad you reached out to join here and hope you will find the support you need.

Having more workshops where students can express themselves and or just listen to others can be so helpful, great idea! It's hard to go through mental challenges when you're young, face all the stressors from school and have no one to talk to.

  • How is mental health challenging you at this time?

It’s been a lifelong challenge. Not being accepted by others and feeling abandoned by my own family and thinking it was bc I was born into a family who hates me. All of which did not lower my confidence but took it all completely away while I was in the process of developing as a person during my childhood years. Always being seen as a child no matter what I do as an adult. All of those may have been the most painful ways/experiences that affected my mental health has been mentally challenging for me.

  • Do you have a young family member, or do you know a student who is struggling with mental health?
Yes I have a young family member. It’s me. Student years and post student years as well as pre student years, the only person I know that’s always struggled with mental health, other than myself, is my toxic mother but when it started, idk bc she doesn’t talk about it. I only know bc I’ve always noticed the signs beginning during my elementary school years.

  • How can we as a society help young people more to deal with today’s stressors?

Not being ashamed or embarrassed or humiliated by having and admitting our mental health issues, accepting that we have them, advocating for any/all therapy that helps/treats any/all mental health illness, living differently for the better meaning not always stressing ourselves out by being in “24/7 rush, pressure, go go go” mode.

These are definitely some helpful ways. There’s definitely other helpful ways too.

@akunknown

Oh and talking to someone you trust about your problems, writing your problems and thoughts in whatever form meaning journaling, as song lyrics, as a book, or any other way.

@akunknown

There was and maybe still is a lot of suffering in your life. It must be hard to look back. I hope coming here helps to heal.

Mental health challenges need to be understood better and seen as a challenge not as something negative about the person. People need to understand that everyone can be affected and not humiliate others as you mentioned.
