Coping with loss from suicide

I recently lost a really good friend to suicide and have been having a difficult time coping with the waves of depression and anxiety that have resulted from this event. I am high functioning where I am working and socializing but when I’m alone I often feel the grief I have pushed aside crash down on me. I don’t where to start aside from giving myself time, but all I want is to feel better.

I’ve been through this as well. I lost two friends in college to suicide and a teacher in high school that I was particularly fond of died by suicide after he was laid off during the recession. It’s a hard thing to get through for sure, and if I’m being completely honest, while the grief will weigh less heavy on you with time, the grief never entirely leaves because it feels so unjust. Take this as a learning opportunity to discover what people need to help prevent suicides in the future, as this is a societal issue we all need to pitch in to prevent by being attentive to the signs that aren’t always obvious. It’s also important to not blame yourself, because this is a phenomenon we all need to help each other with and no one should feel solely responsible. Know that the love you had for then when they were alive still matters now, and you can honor their memory by doing something that would have mattered to then, which many people find helps. Take it one day at a time and practice plenty of self care and soothing while you are trying to heal. I hope the heaviness of this pain eases up for you soon.

Hi, I lost my daughter to a suspicious suicide 15 years ago. Deeply profound.
The pain lessons over time and life sends me pleasant reminders. A person has a mental break and nobody is to blame.
I send you both strength and blessings.🌼
Best wishes, Day

I’m so sorry for the loss of your daughter, I’m not sure if I could be as strong as you if I lost a child. I’m glad you’re healing from this though. *hugs you tightly* Many Blessings, Day. I hope life blesses you with many beautiful and joyous days from now on.

Thank you both for sharing your stories, ultimately I know that time is the key for healing, I just feel like I was completely destroyed by this and need to hear that others have made it through. I am incredibly sorry for both of your losses and while I am grateful for you support I wish you didn’t know how it feels.

@sleepygremlin8 I am so sorry for your loss. That is one of the toughest ways to lose someone in our lives.

Sometimes losing someone is a time we may want to start therapy and help us put things in perspective. In person therapy or online therapy at 7cups are options to consider.

Grief support groups can help also. I find that the self help guides on grief and hope and others help me meet some of the challenges I face https://www.7cups.com/supportGuides/selfHelpGuides.php
