Dangers of sitting too much!

User Profile: amiablePeace77

When you sit, you use less energy than you do when you stand or move but prolonged sitting also can have negative impacts on your health such as increasing the risks of diabetes, heart problems and obesity.

It's important to include regular movement and pauses in your everyday routine to reduce these dangers. Working out often can make you stronger and more flexible, improve your heart health, and also make you happier and less stressed.

Participation question:

Mental stress can cause us not to be able to see the good things in life and lead to excessive rumination or worries which can result in serious health problems. If you have serious, long-term problems with negative thinking and feeling depressed, see your doctor or talk to a therapist if they are related to any mental challenges.

I believe that I exercise enough by going for a 30 min. walk in the morning and neurostacking exercises as well as Tai Chi and yoga. When I work on the computer I try to stand up at least after an hour and move around.

I walk my dog most mornings ( it’s good for both of us), do housework, have a work out routine in the afternoon. I still feel like I should be moving more during the day as I don’t like to sit for too long.

@Lauren63

You tend to move about quite a bit throughout the day. Have you considered stretching or doing Tai Chi before going to bed?

I think I’ve heard on tv that laying down is healthier for your heart cause you’re breathing is better and it’s kinda comfy even.

@gamermomma

Thanks for the information. I will need to look more into detail about this as I lay down when watching TV.

@gamermomma

Laying down is better for your circulation in the your legs as legs are level with your heart so not fighting gravity.

I learned this the hard way: a sedentary lifestyle eventually takes its toll, not just on your body, but on your headspace, too. But here’s the secret: you don't need grueling workouts to turn it around. Just 10 minutes of something you actually enjoy, a walk, a stretch, or even a dance in your kitchen is enough to shift your mood and energy. Don't worry about 'going all-out.' Focus on showing up. Consistency beats intensity every single time, and those small wins add up to a big difference. Movement is medicine, but it doesn't have to be a bitter pill. 🤍

@magnanimousberry

When it comes to consistency, I completely agree with you. It's really the secret! I love those 10 min. exercises, so easy to add to your schedule without creating pressure and if wanted one can do them twice or even 3 times a day.

Absolutely! this is so true, I'm on you with that. Little steps over big bulks helps consistent real growth

What kind of physical activity do you do during the day? Does that feel like enough or do you need to fit more movement into your day?

All kinds. I walk/run, exercise, etc. While I feel like it’s good enough I try to fit in some more walking and exercising after each meal but not too much and not always, only sometimes so it doesn’t feel like I’m overdoing anything

@akunknown

Good to make sure that you're not overdoing anything because it would take the fun away and motivation could go down! Gentle exercise after meals can be quite helpful for maintaining healthy sugar levels and digestion.

Unfortunately I haven't got the time to read everything in depth and I'm in danger of jumping on a soundbox !!

I've recovered from two pulmonary embolisms (blood clots). Despite medication I still occasionally get superficial clots in my lower legs and arms. For the past 10 years I have been helping new survivors in early stages of their recovery, originally through the Thrombosis UK message boards and latterly through *** groups

Sitting still for long periods combined with dehydration is the prime cause for thrombosis, blood clots. Deoxygenated blood returns to the heart through the veinous system and is under no pressure at all. The muscles in the calfs particularly the soleus are regarded as the body's 2nd pump as they squeeze the deep veins forcing the blood back up to the heart against gravity. Sitting for extended periods without movement breaks allows the blood to stagnate which increases the risk of thrombosis. Please heed any advice you read on staying hydrated and try to get up and move about every 60-90 minutes. Fortunately I appear to have ADHD, I get agitated and stuggle to sit for any time at all 😁😁
