Developing Healthy Coping Skills

As an individual therapist, I am frequently asked how people develop healthy relationships. Often, we learn how to do that from the modeling we receive from our families of origin. However, many of us didn't come from healthy families, so we didn’t get the modeling we needed to begin with. When that happens, it's difficult to know what a healthy relationship even looks like. If that's the case, how can we develop a healthy relationship?

I think the best place to start is by asking ourselves what a healthy relationship is? There are many kinds of relationships: Passionate, intimate relationships between couples, friendships, relationships between coworkers, short term relationships, long term relationships, acquaintances etc. but basically, they should follow these basic rules;

Ø Trust

Ø Respect

Ø Supporting each other's interests

Ø The ability to feel safe being honest and open with each other

Ø The ability to maintain your individual identity

Ø The ability to talk about your hopes, dreams, fears, and future

Ø The ability to express fondness and affection, and equity and fairness.

These rules may seem overwhelming and confusing, particularly if we have never seen them in place before. This is why it is important to look at other relationships and see if we can spot these principles in actions. Compare other relationships, looking at what we like and don’t like. Borrowing the healthy actions and behaviors so we can practice to see what works for us. It is important to understand we hold the key to making sure these principles are in place.

In order to do that we have to set these limits for ourselves and others;

1. Give Feedback assertively

2. Take Feedback constructively

3. Make a plan to be better

Here is a link that explains these three principles better. https://nickwignall.com/strong-relationship/

These principles can only be put in place when we understand what we need by understanding what our values are.

One of the reasons people become so disappointed with relationships, is because they give up themselves for the sake of just being in a relationship. This happens when we do not know what our values are, or even how to determine them. We feel afraid of being alone because we don’t know who we are. Which means we can’t set boundaries, communicate our needs, understand our self-worth, or even have deal brakers to keep ourselves safe. These are all necessary parts of being a healthy person. If we are not healthy, we cannot have healthy relationships. We must know who we are if we want others to understand who we are and what we need from them.

In his book “Date Or Soulmate? How to Know if Someone is Worth Pursuing in Two Dates or Less.” Neil Clark Warren (founder of E Harmony), talks about the importance of knowing yourself, having a can’t stand it list, a must have list and differences you must not overlook. When people ignore these principles in any kind of relationship, problems begin.

So remember, if we want healthy relationships of any kind we have to

Ø Know ourselves

Ø Learn to be assertive and ask for what we need

Ø Don’t be afraid to spend some time alone

Ø Must have values and deal breakers

Ø We have to understand our worth and value.

I really enjoyed this article. I believe I am in this exact position. My spouse and I have both been guilty of giving up ourselves and our values for the sake of this relationship in turn it has become toxic and in some points of the past even abusive. She has forced me to agree to a seperatin for us to deal with this issue but I'm both having trouble accepting the seperatin and learning who I am,I don't even know where to start. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Thank you for sharing

This sounds like it's very difficult situation for you. My best advice would be for you to seek individual therapy. That way you can have someone to talk to about what's happening what's happening in a place that feels safe and secure.

Yhank you for this insight. I think its also a problem in some of our friendships. I personally would loose ,yself in my friendships and don't know what to do without them. I'm literally stuck and not able to adjust to not having my friendsaround. Even what to like. I may even want to keep my exs around as friends because. So I recently moved out coz I was living with my friends. Just to find myself. But where is the limit though. I tend to either be the person to attached I a, nothing without you or a bit distant

@blueTangerine4400

These are great insights, and it was super brave of you to move out by yourself. I think trying some individual therapy may be helpful as well. There is another book you might want to try in addition to therapy called "

Thank you so much for this helpful post and links provided. You made an important point about giving yourself up just to be in a relationship. I believe sometimes people also give up themselves because they have to little self love and self confidence and consider themselves inferior to their partner. It's truly important to know how a healthy relationship with yourself and with your partner looks like and that it can only work if both are really in it. Thanks again for taking the time to make it very clear.

You are so welcome. And your insights are spot on. I love what you said about the fact that many of us can feel as though we are inferior or even maybe don't deserve to be in a healthy relationship, so we just take what is there. Great work.

Thank you for reaching out. I think the pair of you may want to look into couples therapy. In that way the both of you can learn how to "feel" heard, without feeling you have to give up your beliefs. You see one of the mistakes people make in a relationship is they think one person MUST be right and WIN an argument. This is called "right fighting". It isn't true. When people argue it is about feeling they are not being heard. However, being heard does not mean the other must agree with you. I can hear you and disagree. Being able to hear someone without them feeling, right fighted, is a learned skill. Try couples therapy and see if it helps with your communication. 😄

How do you control triggers from a long term ( 22 years)

narcissistic relationship, to a new one. Without becoming your ex??

@Sarbok79

Good morning and thank you for reaching out. Great question. Triggers are very common and most of us suffer from them. This is a very difficult answer that would take a long explanation. This is a skill that can time to develop given your history. I strongly recommend a trauma therapist who has a strong history with PTSD. I am not diagnosing you but that kind of history will help guide your needs. I also can recommend this link to a free course for grounding https://courses.therapynutshell.com/p/grounding-skills-for-anxiety-stress-and-ptsd Good luck 🍀
