It’s human nature to want to avoid discomfort and many of us like to spend our days in what is known as the ‘comfort zone’. It's a safe space where we know what to expect. The problem is it’s very easy to become too comfortable here and develop the habit of avoiding anything that feels unnatural or strange to us.

So, what can we do to ensure our comfort zone does not become our mental prison and stop us from doing what really matters to us? Below are some key points that can help:

  • Become conscious of what is outside of your comfort zone.

Draw a circle on a piece of paper and label it ‘Comfort zone’. Write down a handful of things you feel comfortable with and do on a regular basis.

  • Write down things you would like to do or which matter to you next to your circle (outside).

Take a moment to think about what stops you from doing these things. Is it the fear of failure, self-criticism, concern of being exposed and vulnerable, or the thought of what others might say?

  • Attend to your fear

Think about what generates your fear: is it worry, anxiety, fear to disappoint others? Take time to really understand how this situation gets your heart rate up and makes you feel uneasy.

  • Commit to discomfort

Pick one of the items you would like to do but feel uncomfortable with. Start with a small one. Make a commitment to approach it as soon as possible and to get comfortable with the discomfort.

For example, if you feel uneasy about talking to strangers, you could start by asking people for directions or the time.

We only get stuck in our comfort zone when we use it to justify isolation and stagnation, allowing it to control our behaviour and stop us from doing things that we want and or need to do.

Participation question:

  • What keeps you hesitating from doing things?

  • What could be some benefits for you of getting out of your comfort zone?

Seeking Help

Mental stress can cause us to want to stay in our comfort zone. If you feel that you suffer from excessive worries getting out of your comfort zone in a way that limits your daily life and you feel trapped, please see your doctor or talk to a therapist if you think they are related to any mental challenges.

@amiablePeace77 I think what keeps me from doing a lot of things is my anxiety and fear. I get scared to do certain things because I worry I will get stuck with panic. One thing I struggle with is driving on the highway. I am scared to death that I will get on the highway and then freeze with fear and then I'll be stuck there 😂 I have pushed myself to drive in more places and I've been successful, but I don't know if I'll ever get so comfortable to try driving on the highway.

@fruityPond7887

It might feel impossible right now but remind yourself how it felt before you started to drive in more places! You can do this step by step. Maybe asking a friend to accompany you could help, so you have to drive only as much as you feel comfortable and then let them drive - not now but when you feel ready?

@amiablePeace77 That could be a great way to ease into it! ❤️ Everything takes time, but hopefully I will be able to learn soon. Thank you for your encouragement!
