When you're feeling good, have you ever noticed that when you turn on the TV or computer and read bad news, your good mood goes away?

Research shows that repeated exposure to violent or disturbing media can increase stress, heighten anxiety and contribute to feelings of helplessness. These effects are not just short-term. Over time, they erode the emotional resources you rely on to care for yourself and others.

Seeking Help

Mental stress can cause us not to be able to see the good things in life and lead to excessive rumination or worries which can result in serious health problems. If you have serious, long-term problems with negative thinking and feeling depressed, see your doctor or talk to a therapist if they are related to any mental challenges.

I force myself to limit the amount of time I spend being exposed to the news. The last time we had this president, I was obsessed with worry and couldn't stop constantly checking if there were any updates, I would constantly refresh my news app, and I was a mess.

My therapist told me to that I was allowed an hour and a half hours of news a day to be broken up or used at once, and my husband was helping her ensure I stuck to that. I used 30 minutes 3 times a day so I could check morning, afternoon, and nighttime news reports and I'm soo grateful she made me agree to that. I felt like I was still informed but not overwhelmed.

That's basically kind of similar to what I'm doing now, except it's worse this time so I have gone several days without checking because I honestly don't want to know, I'll check eventually, but I know it's not going to be good so I prefer to try to ignore it for a little bit

@K87

It makes so much sense to stop listening to the news when you feel they impact you in a negative way! I am on a news diet too and learned rn it's better to stick to it! Good that your husband is supporting you in this matter.
