The Art of Doing What Matters

Many of us know the feeling of being lost in a repetitive cycle of daily chores and routines and a feeling like we are functioning, but not really living. Focusing on what really matters helps us to get grounded again and also to regain hope.

  1. Choose what matters:

In order to not get lost, we need to know which places are worth visiting. How much does it help spending time in the past, feeling the pains of hurtful situations again or worrying about what will happen in the future?

Making plans is okay and can help to gain a certain amount of control but getting caught up in worrying does not help.

  1. Do what matters:

It is only natural for humans to want to avoid any kind of pain and suffering and this includes the pain of failure. We might feel hesitant to try something new and start to feel stuck in life. However, life is about both succeeding and failing. Doing what matters comes with effort and struggle and the possibility of mistakes, setbacks, and losses.

  1. Values that matter:

Ignoring our values just to please others can hurt our self-esteem and make us feel disheartened about ourselves. Acting on our values is probably the hardest step we may take, but it can also be a most meaningful one.

What matters most to you in life right now?

Do you feel you are living in accordance with your own values or do you feel like you are living to please others by sacrificing what you feel is important for what they value?

When people feel stuck in their mind, they might start to withdraw from family and friends and also from reality. If you feel that you live too much inside your head, ruminating on painful situations rather than engaging with people around you or focusing on the present moment, please reach out for help.

@amiablePeace77

What matters most to you in life right now? Finding a way to a sustainable and lasting happiness for myself and others.

Do you feel you are living in accordance with your own values or do you feel like you are living to please others by sacrificing what you feel is important for what they value?

I think all humans are conditioned from birth with the values of other people, so I do not think I can be totally unique, but I am very grateful for all those that have helped me form values where I can live life giving some of my time and attention to others.

@amiablePeace77 I think I am living for myself for the most part! I probably go out of my way for others a little too much, but I think I am on track with my goals and I am pretty happy with life for the most part! <3

@fruityPond7887

Glad to hear that you're happy with your life for the most part, I believe it's hard if not impossible to be happy all the time. I wonder whether you might benefit from setting more boundaries for yourself and others?

@amiablePeace77 I definitely think setting boundaries is so important and something that I am always working out! I really struggle with feeling guilty when I have to say no to someone. Thank you for your encouragement!

@fruityPond7887

I can relate fruityPond7887. I needed to learn to use the word "No" and found out that sometimes people were quite okay with it because they actually could do what they asked me on their own.

@amiablePeace77 Right! It's important to keep that fine line between being a people pleaser and taking care of ourselves first 😊

@fruityPond7887 I agree. I prefer not to be a people pleaser which implies to me just doing things to get people to like me, but instead have a sincere concern for other people.

What is more important to me right now is discovering who I am and my self worth. The past year has been quite a journey for me and I am still going. Still learning.
