Being With Your Feelings

Both thinking about what you are feeling and experiencing your feelings have benefits. It is important though that we are aware of and connect with our feelings and truly feel them.

  • Are you giving yourself enough time to feel your feelings instead of just intellectualizing (thinking) about them?
  • What helps you?

@soulsings

I do sit down at times and hear what my body tells me without analysing what comes up. I would also hug myself to help feeling the feelings and tell myself "It's okay how you feel now but this will change again".

@amiablePeace77 good idea - I even ask parts of my body that are hurting what they are trying to tell me. It is all in my mind but sometimes I get interesting and helpful answers.

@determinedSquare9605

The last month can feel like the hardest one but hang in there and don't forget to self-care. Learning is much easier when we get breaks.

I have trauma about expressing my feelings, and since feeling them causes them to be expressed, it's difficult to make time to feel them without feeling existentially afraid.

@soulsings

I was always told showing emotions was a sign of weakness.

27 years ago, when my mother passed, I had to be the strong one in the family. Everyone else had lost it. I guess I buried them and forgot where I buried them.

If I'm experiencing positive feelings, I write them down and what caused them so I can look back when I need an uplift. If I'm experiencing negative feelings, I think back to events that have happened in the past to remind myself that these negative feelings won't last forever and I am able to overcome any situation.

@soulsings

Are you giving yourself enough time to feel your feelings instead of just intellectualizing (thinking) about them?

I used to spend a lot of time intellectualizing/thinking and overthinking every single moment of my day, good or bad. I've realised more than retrospection, thoughtful or not, what matters is the ability to keep going with a positive attitude and learning from your experiences. I'm taking one day at a time.

What helps you?

I'm currently reading Open When by Clinical Psychologist, Dr. Julie Smith. It is a wonderful book covering diverse topics surrounding life and human psychology eg, one sided love, passive aggressive behaviour, impostor syndrome, etc. Getting to know about the human behaviour and how to rewire your brain for the better. I'm adopting methods from the book and I already feel rejuvenated.
