Nelson Mandela Day July 18, 2025
Every year on July 18th, people around the world come together to celebrate Nelson Mandela Day. This special day was created to honor the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela, the former President of South Africa and iconic human rights advocate. The main objective of the day is to inspire individuals to take action to help change the world for the better and, in doing so, to build a global movement for good.
What is something you can do to help change the world for the better?
I can give a neighbor some of my plants to grow in their garden.

Sure I could too, but only if this neighbour seems to be genuinely excited about that gift. Otherwise, it turns into an obligation to plant those.
Beware of unwanted gifts, which are sometimes just "problem dumping". In the late 80s, the neighbour hood supermarket (in NY) was offering one whole frozen turkey if you bought another.
The parish kitchen freezer got filled with several turkeys, just like the fridge in the summer mysteriously filled with gigantic zucchinis 😃
We called other parishes asking if they were interested for their own Thanksgiving dinners (with other parishioners or for the homeless).
We were told they were about to call us and offer the same.
I felt rather smug that turkey was NOT on the menu at home.

You made a good point about unwanted gifts. I usually ask before I give just to make sure they like the veggies the plant will produce one day.

What is something you can do to help change the world for the better?
I donate my old clothes to local helpers.
My mother donates money and food items on the occasion of birthdays and anniversaries in the family to those in need. She has even cultivated this virtue in me.
I can support people through online communities like 7 Cups.
I'm looking forward to join an NGO to support assault victims and children below the poverty line. I was invited to their AGM recently and the cause really appealed to me. I can't wait to do my bit to make their lives better.

I loved Nelson Mandela. I still remember the day he died. I remember exactly where I was when I heard the news.
