Practise what to say

Repeated practice of what you want to talk about and say can ease anxiety.

Before making a phone call, do you ever rehearse what you're going to say? If so, how does it help you?

@amiablePeace77.   I practice conversations all the time! Especially ones that are supposed to be professional, important, or standing up for myself, setting boundaries, & stating what I need.

Practicing like this helps in several way, but the most rei have discovered, it helps me get clear on what I actually want, what I need, what is not negotiable & what is. How to express them clearly , yet still staying respectful to myself & others involved.

I try too. It was really helpful when I had a call from an insurance company after I was rear-ended. It was the other person’s fault, and preparing for the conversation helped me handle it without getting walked over!

I do this constantly. Unfortunately, once in the moment, anxiety and trauma take over and I forget everything I was going to say. It all comes out a jumbled mess. If I can read off something instead, I do that.

@soulsings Yes, the thing I'm reading off of is typically something I've written down. I agree, it does help, though it's not always possible or appropriate.

@Zeraphim I hear you in person people do not expect you to read off notes unless in a business situation

@amiablePeace77 I do this a lot. I'll also write things down pertaining to the call so that I don't lose track of the purpose for the call. Having a pen or pencil handy I'd always a good idea too so that I can write things down as they're told to me or I forget what was said.

@amiablePeace77 I do practice my "lines" and also anticipate what others might say.

@soulsings

Anticipating different versions of what others might say and reflecting on it can help a lot to ensure a skillful conversation.

This is a helpful tip. Though I prefer not, it can throw me off guard if the script does not go as planned

Oh, boy! First off, sending a text to ask if it is a good time and maybe what the issue is might be a better way to start. Then... it depends who you are calling and why. You might as well write list of topics ahead of that call. Why rehearse at all?  This is not theatre or a public statement

When topics are hard and no matter how prepared you are, the other might cut you off and even change topics, it is better to WRITE to that person instead.

However, if you are leaving a vocal message, take a moment to be sure it will be concise. Don't drag it on with "hmmmm", make sure you enunciate your name and number, so the other person does not feel like a hostage. Personally, I NEVER listen to vocal messages any more. I do not have that patience. My outgoing message just says to LEAVE a text message or an email

Before making a phone call, do you ever rehearse what you're going to say? If so, how does it help you?

@Fradiga

Thank you for sharing your opinion on this topic. There are certainly pros and cons. I just like to rehearse or write it down when I make an important call so to ensure I do not forget to get back to certain points when the other party is trying to divert the conversation.

Well, you're of the same mind, of course. The idea is to have your words ready, not necessarily whole sentences. It pays off to have at least the right vocabulary

Hello people!

I would say I do indeed get nervous before making/taking a phone call. To help me prepare, I try to count to 10 and take deep breathes; sometimes our breathing is really fast that we tend to dismiss it.
Other than that, make a mental note of what the phone call would be about, and set aside 10-15 minutes before the phone call to just "get ready" (like the "flow state" one gets in before jumping into another task). If you did have questions for the other person, make note of them somewhere so that you can ask them during the phone call. If not, that's okay!

Yes. I always do.

If so, how does it help you?

It helps me to prepare for calls by planning them out ahead of time and having these “calls” as if they were actually happening before they happen so I can plan as many responses to whatever’s said as possible and choose the best response to use.

FYI: this is my process of planning and preparing for any conversations. Not just phone calls.
