Starter Foods

I'm a soup person, so whenever it's possible I like to have a warm soup to start my main meal. Ginger soup with a variety of vegetable is one of my favorites. If no soup than I often have a nice mixed salad with lot of cucumbers but also pickles.

  • What is one of your favorite starter foods?

@amiablePeace77 I really love Olive Garden's chicken and gnocchi soup 😍 I'm also a sucker for a good Caesar salad. This restaurant near my house has this Greek soup called avgolemono and it's soooo good!! ❤️

@amiablePeace77 I made a pot of sauteed veggies and then I kept in refrigerator. Sometimes I added them to a sauce to make like a stir fry and then sometimes added them to an omelet. When it had been in there a few days I made chili with it as a base.

Oh I love soup, we make a lot of it here. Our soup is simple but it's so good, it just contains broth, salt, pepper, garlic, carrots, potatoes, cabbage, and kale. :)

@amiablePeace77 - Thank you, it really is so good. I actually just had some today with some frozen breadsticks that we baked in the oven, we like to put plain ramen noodles in there as well.

Great question! My starter foods are generally my only foods. Haha . My favorite soups are homemade potatoe soup and different versions of lentil soup. I'm grateful this season because I can source my own vegetables from my humble garden a few times...and even trade with others in the small village I (presently) live in. I'm plant-based (vegan) and appreciate whatever organic food sources are available here. 😀❤ Right now, I love the cucumbers and apples available, and I make a salad put of it with nuts and (occasionally) raisins.

@theboymoana

Hi theboymoana, a starter food is a food that is usually served at the beginning of a meal, maybe you know it under the term appetizer. Often it is a soup, a salad but there are many options.

Now that we did the starter course, I am going to share the main course with you all. I make ssuteed veggies then make a sauce in a separate pan from soy sauce, corn starch or arrowroot thickener, garlic, onion and ginger powder and stir into sauteed veggies for healthy veggie dish. I added soy sausage for protein.

I love egg foo yong except it has too much oil at the restaunt so I make my own with onion, mushrooms, shredded carrots cooked until firm. Then make egg mix of mostly egg whites, soy sauce, garlic, onion and ginger powder with a dash of soy sauce and a Tbsp of water to help make the eggs combine and beat.

I played with temp under pan. I coat 5-6" cast iron or stainless steel pan with oil you like to use and then heat on medium heat. I take 1 teaspoon and drop a little of the well mixed egg mixture on the hot oil. If it puffs up it is hot enough. If it burns turn down heat. Now that it is just right I pour enough egg mixture into a 6 inch pan and add 1/8 cup of cooked veggies and spread evenly. I find covering the pan helps cook the top. Flipping it is not easy for me, but I manage it and cook some more on other side.

Enjoy!

That sounds so delicious soul! I like that you use arrowroot instead of corn starch, which is healthier and ginger, garlic, onion are almost a must for me in many dishes. Mushrooms give an amazing taste!.

Now that you started, let me share a very simply recipe too and I hope others will follow as well 😊

Something quick and easy is mashed chickpeas/garbanzo beans (similar to humus) but warm with coconut curry sauce and veggies. Sometimes I have it with a soja sausage, other times without since the chickpeas are a good source of protein. I always have a bag of frozen chickpeas in the freezer so it's quick (chickpeas have been soaked and boiled soft then frozen)

Boil the frozen chickpeas briefly, drain off water, mash chickpeas, add salt and garlic and tahini paste to taste (I just put black and white sesame seeds in coffee grinder, transfer into a jar and add olive oil to get the tahini - also prepared)

Fry onion and garlic, add currypowder, add water and finely grated ginger, add (optional) cut chives and herbs you like, add vegetable stock and coconut powder to taste and cook your veggies in it. I find pumpkin gives a good taste but usually use a variety of veggies and green leaves. This does taste awesome with mushrooms too! Cook until veggies are done and thicken with tapioca flour.

Enjoy! :)

Chick peas can be added to practically anything and having them ready can come in very handy!

They can also be used to make burgers or chick pea milk.

@amiablePeace77 I just did a small batch of soybeans soaking them overnight and simmering for a few hours. Made up a nice chili adding onions, grated carrots, soy sausage, tofu cubes, spices and cashew butter.
