International Tolerance Day - The United Nations' (UN) International Day for Tolerance is annually observed on November 16 to educate people about the need for tolerance in society and to help them understand the negative effects of intolerance.

Tolerance is important because it provides a more peaceful society. When people can express themselves freely and peacefully without fear of persecution are more likely to live happier lives as functional members of society.

@soulsings Where is this planet where tolerance exists? I quite think we need international no double standards day before we jump the shark and talk of lofty goals such as tolerance. Even then, tolerance is a weak donkey word. It certainly seems a few miles away from “same as me.” It’s damn hard to tolerate your colonial oppressor. The oppressor certainly “tolerates” the oppressed so long as they don’t complain about the unequal state of affairs! So please, this ain’t a good time to declare an international day of anything other than hypocrisy. That! That the human race have mastered perfectly!
@FlatenedByLife I agree that intolerance is rampant. The way tolerance starts is by one person being tolerant of others. I am not trying to change the world. I am trying to change my own mind and attitude to others. I think criticizing and categorizing others does not make this world a better place.
I will continue trying to be tolerant of others. I do not expect to be poplular in this endeavor and I do not expect to change the world.
@soulsings I think an international day of understanding others is maybe better. We can believe we are tolerant and actually have a lot of bias that promotes some hidden intolerance in society. Racism is one of those forces that thrives on the appearance of tolerance. If one is tolerant then nothing is wrong, nothing needs to be changed in you. You say you can’t be responsible for others who are truly intolerant, and then the intolerance lives on, hidden in “the shadows.” The intolerant don’t want to be called out, so they hide behind misinformation. If you try to call them out they will say that it is actually you being intolerant. — That’s why I don’t like this word. It’s a tricky word, and I’ll leave you with this quote from Wikipedia
The paradox of tolerance states that if a society's practice of tolerance is inclusive of the intolerant, intolerance will ultimately dominate, eliminating the tolerant and the practice of tolerance with them.
@FlatenedByLife I actually prefer the term compassion and altruism but for the sake of this writing prompt, I was given tolerance. Thank you for pointing out some of the implications of using the word tolerance.

Well, there are not too many answers about the value of "peaceful" tolerance. How about tolerating injustice and harm to oneself or others?
The tolerance you speak of is very specific and hard to sell to certain people who see tolerance as too soft or see it as accepting what their personality or frame of mind would not / should not accept. Some people are unable to imagine that the realities of others could be quite different from them.
Tolerance then often hit boundaries and those boundaries are not the same for everyone.
Personally, I am always attracted to people who are very different from my own background. There are wonderful discoveries out there about what they think and why they think the way they do. This might make me a rather tolerant person, but it is out of curiosity that I am that way, so it takes zero efforts.
Tolerance comes from the Latin word which means "to bear" (Tolero), itself from "Tollo" - to carry.

I have to confess it is just a family trait.
@soulsings tw) just incase. similarities and differences are equally as important, they are both what makes humans unique. But the main things I see that makes us similar to each other is, despite where you come from or what you've been through, we all hurt, we all cry, we all feel the same ways. But yes we all need to be kinder, more understanding, more tolerant to each other. We are all equally as important as each other and should be treated that way
