Unsure
Hi there! In my opinion, therapy is wonderful and does a lot good for people and helps them improve. But my question is, how do I know if I need therapy and how can I approach my parents and have them accept my feelings and not freak out when I tell them what is truly going on? I know I need help but I don't know how to ask them. Thank you. <3
@cuteblohsh I am glad you are looking at the issues in your life. As a teen, your parents are likely involved in the process of getting a therapist. That can be a great unknown, since people often do not talk about mental illness. But there are ways you can try that may reveal how your parents feel.
For instance you could talk about this person in school and how they are talking about the feelings they have. It is not easy for them. They even go to a therapist. Or something like that.
See what their reaction is to talk about therapy for someone else. That may likely be their reaction if you bring it up for yourself. If they try to "put things in the closet" or sweep the problems "under the rug", then they may not be open to having someone in their family have mental health issues because of the stigma society puts on mental health.
On the other hand they could be receptive and want to help you. But revealing everything to them all at once has the risk of rejection. Slow and steady until you find out their feelings on this subject.
You asked this question: How do I know if I need therapy? Therapy is something that is very personal and you really are the best expert at knowing how you feel. Although, there are some markers that might suggest therapy might be beneficial and they may include: Struggling to function at work and/or school
Sleep issues
Issues with your relationships
Feeling like you are struggling with your emotions that they are impacting areas in your life
