Hello everyone,

I hope you're all doing well and enjoying the festivities surrounding Diwali. As we approach this vibrant and joyous occasion, I wanted to create a space for us to share our thoughts, experiences, and feelings about this cultural celebration.

Background:
Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights, is a significant Hindu festival celebrated by millions of people around the world. It symbolizes the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. Diwali typically lasts five days, with families coming together to light oil lamps, decorate their homes, exchange gifts, and partake in delicious feasts. The festival holds cultural, religious, and social significance, fostering a sense of unity and joy within communities.

Questions to Consider:

1) How do you generally feel about Diwali? Does your country or the place you come from celebrate this festival? Do you have any special traditions or memories related to Diwali that you'd like to share?
2) Do you have any plans for celebrating Diwali this year, or do you have tips and ideas for activities to make the most of the festival? Are there any do's and don'ts in Diwali?
3) What are myths or misconceptions about Diwali, and what are some ways we can tackle them?

Tickled pink,

PeacePink

@mish3l

I've now also looked up the pictures and it really looks awesome!

Here are some examples I found:

@mish3l

I agree with you that it's so beautiful; there's a reason why it is nicknamed a festival of lights after all. It's so vibrant and colorful whenever you find pictures of it online, and people who do these festivals always have so many stories to tell me.

@PeacePink We celebrate Halloween in my country but the Night of all Saints is more traditional here. People go to the cemeteries and remember everyone that they lost and light all kids of candles for them on their graves. All of the cemetery is lighten up with small lights. It's different than Diwali and it's partially sad but it's magical too 😊

@mish3l

I never realized that the "Night of All Saints" was a thing. What's the background behind the tradition--how did it come to be? I'm always interested in learning about these things. That's really cool that they light a bunch of candles--and as in relation to a cemetry, sonuds a bit spooky yet at the same time seems quite magical and fantastical.

@PeacePink it's called All Saints' Day properly but we always go there in the night when it's the most beautiful so I call it a Night. It originates in Western Europe Christianity of course, around 998, one monk started it in his monastery and all other monks took it as an authority. Lighting the candle symbolised the belief that the person who passed is going to the heaven and have an afterlife.

I don't believe in the afterlife but I go there anyway bc my family goes and it's a place where my grief can get outside a little bit without me not breaking down because I'm mesmerised by the lights 😅🌃

Pity image upload isn't working, I would send you some images :) Later on my PC then 😊

@mish3l

I really appreciate you taking the time to explain this, and hopefully, people who see your forum post can learn something new as well. That's so interesting that it was started by some monk--and such a long time ago as well; it's amazing how powerful and long-lasting such traditions are. I think it's beautiful that this holiday wishes well for people in the afterlife who have passed on.

I also respect your lack of belief in the afterlife, yet simultaneously, being able to enjoy and be a part of that beautiful day. It sounds like you have lost some people in the past as well, so I just want you to know that I'm sorry for your loss. It's always hard to lose someone and perhaps you have even lost multiple people, but it's nice to hear that this day gives you a space where the grief can be altered into something that is easier to emotionally handle in that moment, in the form of mesmerizing lights.

Take your time, and I would love to see some images of this day; take care in the meantime!

@audienta

It's so interesting how so many important festivals or holidays are unheard of to us, but cultural awareness and knowledge are very essential to aiding in better communication and understanding of others and the backgrounds that they come from.
