Traumatic Experiences Community Check-In Wednesday 15 July 2020
Good Morning everyone!!! The topic for todays check-in is positive affirmations. Positive affirmations heighten the practice of positive thinking and self-empowerment. They are sentences people use to describe how they want to be or how they want their circumstances to be; done in a way which affirms that it is already true or well on its way to becoming true. Words alone can be very miraculous marvels. Hearing and reading, seeing and believing words holds as much if not more importance for us as human beings as does food, water, air, and shelter. Our attachment to hearing what we need to hear is a direct manifestation of our attachment to knowing what we need to know- and that knowingness, that ability to believe in our knowingness, for us, as trauma survivors, can be life or death.
Our unique journey might inspire very specific affirmations we developed with our therapists or support team. Yet, there are still the three most important affirmations we can give ourselves:
-I am important.
-My life is meaningful.
-I matter.
Positive statements matter. Not just the general, happy-go-lucky feel good stuff though, I am talking about intentional positive statements. Below I have listed positive affirmations that we can all use whenever the symptoms of PTSD are bearing down heavily upon us.
I am successful in whatever I do
I plan my work and work my plan
I focus on what is truly essential
I will make the most of new opportunities
Good flows to me, good flows from me
I feel wonderful and alive
I feel the joy of abundance
I speak with confidence and calm assurance
The universe provides for my every want and need
I am healthy and happy
I have a lot of energy
I radiate happiness
I am successful in whatever I do
Everything is getting better every day
My mind is calm
I am always on the path of success & victory
I am peace with myself
I find peace and joy in all aspects of my life
I have value and I matter
I am a success in all that I do
I am happy
I feel joy, love, and abundance
There is an unlimited supply of positive affirmations we can all use when we are at our lowest moments. They are my number one source of motivation personally. If it wasnt for them I likely would not be making this post for you all right now. Positive affirmations do not work for everyone, but one never knows until they try it. I will end this post by asking you the following questions.
1. How are you feeling today?
2. What if any positive affirmations have worked for you?
3. What topics would you like for me to discuss in a future check in?
As always I wish you all have a greater today than yesterday in hopes for a better and brighter tomorrow!!!

Hi!
How I love affirmations ❤
1. How are you feeling today?
I just woke up. I have a headache and nausea, but I believe it will go away once I get out of bed. No worries.
2. What if any positive affirmations have worked for you?
I actually made small cards with affirmations on them. There are pictures that are important to me and then a text over that. I carry then with me in my wallet and everytime I open it they are there as reminders.
My affirmations are:
I make people happy
I have many things to be happy about
I'm good enough
I deserve to be loved
I am the most important person in my life
I keep my feet flat on the ground
3. What topics would you like for me to discuss in a future check in?
You might have already covered the topic but I'm writing it anyway. I would like to understand more about the responses to trauma. Fight, fright and flee- instinct.
Hugs for everyone!
@spectacularSunrise7824
I do hope the nausea and your headache go away. I really love the card idea. I may have to try that myself. Those are wonderful affirmations you use as well. I will cover responses to trauma in a future check-in. Thanks for recommending it. Hugs for you as well. Thank you for participating in this thread.
@Understandingempath
Thank you for your reply. I feel much better already :-) The headache disappeared soon after I got up. Thanks for taking the topic. Realizing what I did during my trauma was the most common reaction was something that helped me in my healing process.
@spectacularSunrise7824
I love these affirmations. So good. Hope you feel better soon.
@Understandingempath
1. How are you feeling today?
Feeling alright, bit tired, had a hard time falling and staying asleep last night.
Volunteered at the petting zoo this morning, which has given me more energy
2. What if any positive affirmations have worked for you?
There are people on my side
My well being is important
I deserve safety and happiness
3. What topics would you like for me to discuss in a future check in?
Improving self image and self esteem
How to apologise in a genuine and meaningful way
@Madaraismyspiritanimal
Thats awesome that you volunteered at a petting zoo this morning! I hope you had alot of fun doing that. You do deserve safety and happiness. How to apologize in a meaningful and genuine way is a wonderful topic to discuss in a future check-in. Thank you for recommending it and thank you for participating in this check-in my friend.
@Madaraismyspiritanimal
Pettinh zoo?!! Yes! What animals?
I love these affirmations. You are wonderful.
Hello!!
1. How are you feeling today?
Well, not the best, but not the worst either :)
2. What if any positive affirmations have worked for you?
To be honest, most work if I try to assure myself hard enough :D
3. What topics would you like for me to discuss in a future check in?
I dont know if this has been discussed before, but maybe something on the topic of ‘forgiving yourself?
Thanks for the check in ^^ Take good care!!
@Hydrangea03
At least you aren't feeling your worst. I am certainly glad positive affirmations work for you. Forgiveness is a topic I've touched on several times but I don't think I have dedicated an entire post to that topic. I will do so in a future check-in. Thank you for recommending it and thank you for participating in this check-in my friend.
Thank you for being thoughtful, @Understandingempath ^^
I hope youre well!
@Understandingempath
Thank you for the list of affirmations! Many of them resonate and I will adopt a couple of them.
1. How are you feeling today?
A bit anxious, but it should be a good day. I'm getting centered/focused this morning before I start my day, or at least trying, haha.
2. What if any positive affirmations have worked for you?
I never tried positive affirmations much because I believed they were disingenous. However, more recently I've come to understand better how to use affirmative statements in a genuine way. It isn't really about making myself think something is true when I don't really believe it, but telling myself what I know is true even though I'm reacting as if it isn't. Finding that division within myself, encapuslated within a statement, is very powerful. So far, I only have one: I am safe.
3. What topics would you like for me to discuss in a future check in?
I struggle with rumination - and the difference between healthy processing and getting stuck in depressive thoughts/feelings. Anything addressing that would be much appreciated. <3
@calypteanna
Glad to hear you are centered and focused today! Having one positive affirmation to live by is much better than having none. I use them not necessarily because they are true but because I desire for them to be true and saying them aloud pushes me to work towards making each statement true. I believe I can focus a future check-in on rumination. Thank you for the recommendation and also for participating in todays check-in. Have a wonderful day my friend!
@calypteanna
I am safe is a very important one. I like it! Hoping you have a great rest of the week.
1. How are you feeling today?
I've been physically pretty rubbish today - aches, fatigue - but not really unexpected so it's not so bad (I've got CFS/ME so I'm used to it). Emotionally pretty good today, some moments of tension and worry but considering my physical state, pretty good.
2. What positive affirmations do I use?
I'm VERY new to this, I was always a bit sceptical of them, but over the past week I've found them to be really helpful. Mine have tended to be long, so I'll give the short versions.
I am brave because I experience painful emotions and I talk about them and I don't fight them
I am strong, several people have said this to me. My experiences have strengthened, not weakened me.
I am still here and that's amazing.
I am compassionate and I deserve that compassion for myself as well
I am SO loved, I am truly blessed
I have been through a lot. I am still going through a lot. I deserve to be kind and gentle to myself.
3. Topics for future check ins
Not sure if you've already done these (I'm new!) but perhaps something on ways of healing trauma e.g yoga, EMDR. Or perhaps something on intrusive thoughts.
@Rosa9570
These are so so good. Thank you for sharing!
@Rosa9570
Sorry to hear that you felt rubbish today. Glad that you were doing alright emotionally though. Its good to see the positive amidst all the negative. Those are all wonderful affirmations and I am glad that they are helping you. Intrusive thoughts is a topic I have yet to discuss in a check-in so definitely I will cover that in a future check-in. I do hope your day ended on a positive note and thank you so much for participating in the check-in today!
@Understandingempath Hey How are you?
How am I? Hmm - standard A answer is - ok. Standard B answer is - fine. If I'm honest - Idk. Sort of - miserable - frustrated - angry but there's some snark - but yet - I don't feel too bad lol. Does that make any sense? I'm isolating too much because it's so easy. So sort of forcing socializing - so I invaded your check in lol! Anxiety will probably kick in later and I'll have a classic case of panic and post. Um - should probably apologize too - in case this is Idk - offensive or Idk - aggressive comes to mind - I'm sorry for that
I love affirmations - I dont have any of my own - people have given me them here - I dont really believe them for myself tbh. But I have used them while talking to other people
Hmm - Idk - you usually do pretty good with topics - So I'm not sure I can give a good suggestion
Thank you for all you do here
Take care - yeah?
@mytwistedsoul
I love your openness and honesty. You are incredible at identifying emotions. That's not hard!
@mytwistedsoul
It's not uncommon to feel such mixed emotions at times. It makes total sense to me. To be honest I am also isolating alot and I know theres the pandemic I can lean on as the reason for it but deep down I know I would be doing this if there was no pandemic. You didn't invade the check-in as I actually look forward to seeing you participating in these threads. Thank you for the support my friend and your input is always appreciated. I hope you have a wonderful evening!
@Understandingempath
Today I am doing relatively well compared to my usual. No major anxiety provoking event and haven't been depressed. I think the affirmation that means the most to me is "I am enough". I had a necklace made with those words. I haven't felt like I am enough most of my life. Often feel like I am failing. So having that reminder is important to me.
@zeravat119
i am enough. How powerful those 3 words are.
@Undersatndingempath
