Traumatic Experiences Community Daily Check-In : Monday, October 9th, 2017

October 9th, 2017

Hello everyone! smiley ٩(◕。)۶

Hope everyone is doing okay heart My week was so-so, had some hard time regarding my current situation but I am optimistic that I shall find solutions to overcome soon. The hope of coming to solutions soon is what keeping me on track and preventing me from derailing.

Hope is a beautiful thing. heart Without hope, we all would crumble out, I guess. Our lives are not easy anymore and let's face it. With every passing day, new challenges are getting added, testing us farther and beyond. Sometimes we stumble down and it becomes harder to find ourselves and find the way which could lead to light. While this struggle is going on, some of us do find a way. That is because even in the darkest night, staring into the abyss, they see light; they see hope heart And they cling onto it and overcome every obstacle with equal amount of effort. wink

Please let us know how is your day going, what all have you planned for the day, what challenges are your facing and how are you planning to tackle them.

And please remember..... We all are fighters, nonetheless. heart And that makes us special. heartheart

My day is starting slow; I have cried already, mourning/grieving what's past. I am doing yoga now.

What I have planned is continuing to house-hunt, working on the goodbye photo book present I was making for the kids I worked with and getting that sent off, and at some point perhaps going to the hospital when my sister's baby is born. I will also go out at some point perhaps to run an errand or two. I will also respond to my therapist.

@singercrystalspirit Hi singer, crying is actually beneficial even though at the time it may not feel that way. It sounds like you have a lot of pain over losses, what never was etc that need expression and its good that you're allowing yourself to go through some grieving for yourself.

I love the idea of the goodbye book you have been working on for the children..that leaves children with a lot of special memories that can be treasured and revisited. smiley So your an auntie or uncle then? Congratulations on that and I hope your day goes as planned

Thank you :) :) *Big hugs*

All I want is to be happy. Sometimes I feel like I never will be. I know people around the world with varying circumstances and upbringings find a way to be happy... Is something so horribly, terribly wrong with me that I simply cannot seem to?

No real plans for the day, aside from doing what I can to stay grounded and cope ("same thing we do every day, Pinky....") Having somewhat of an "off" day so far, or rather feeling "off" -- nothing specific nor particularly distressing for me to to deal with, just..off. So rather than stressing myself out looking for answers (which requires knowing what the questions even are) I'm compassionately allowing these maddeningly ambiguous feelings to be as they are, until they pass (as they eventually will do).

I guess employing self care to make myself comfortable in the meantime counts as a plan. Or trying my best to do so, anyway. One millisecond at a time.

@melliotm Sounds a good approach to take for yourself Mellio. smiley What do you find helps you the most on days when you feel this way? Its really good to hear how your able to put yourself first and not push yourself to do more than you feel capable of acheiving and allow the self care to happen naturally.

I think your right about going over things searching for answers. Sometimes that can lead to us feeling worse and frustrated because there are times when you may never get an answer but if you do its far better to try and reach conclusions and resolution naturally

@dancingRainbow45 "What do you find helps you the most on days when you feel this way?"

Patience and acceptance, distraction, focusing on the basics, not getting caught up in my own head. Mindful practice when I can manage it. Breaking the day down into manageable bits if I can. Self compassion is the overarching principle I try to use as a blueprint, as uncertainty can be a trigger for anxiety.

Basically try to stay as present in the moment as possible and just ride it out ☺️

@Halogen Love your post and am adding some ideas for holding onto hope for anyone who may find this useful

If you are struggling with feelings of hopelessness, here on some tips on what you can do today to rekindle and foster hope:

Start a gratitude journal.
Start small and keep it simple. List at least 3 things that you can feel grateful for today. For example, my gratitude list for today:

I am grateful for the special people I have in my life
I am thankful for my eyesight to appreciate the beauty around me
I am grateful for the muscles that make it possible for me to smile at others

Proactively practice self-compassion.
The trick is to non-judgmentally feel your feelings good or bad, and instead of fighting against them, accept that it is okay, even healthy, for you to feel as you do and to give expression to your emotions.
You have a right to those feelings. They are not bad, weak, or stupid.
You can say things to yourself like, This really hurts, or, this is really hard.
Then follow up that statement with something like, I am here for you, or, Ive got your back. To make the exercise more powerful, use your own name in the place of you.
Do something you are good at.
If you are good at making a grilled-cheese sandwich, make one for yourself or for a friend.
By practicing things that you know you can already do well, over time you build confidence and create your own motivation to try out new things.
Write a goal for yourself.
Again, start simple and small. For instance, if need to check the mail, break the goal down into manageable steps. Dont forget to congratulate yourself for each step you complete!

Step 1: Find the key (if applicable).
Step 2: Open the door.
Step 3: Walk to the mailbox.
Step 4: Get the mail.
Step 5: Walk back to the house.
Step 6: Pat yourself on the back for a job well done!

Get help! Sometimes we all need a little support. Sometimes we need someone outside of ourselves to hold hope for us while were finding our footing again.Due to the fact that you are alive and reading these words, I know you possess strength, perhaps greater strength than you believe you have. I know this because you survived what many people would consider unimaginable, unthinkable cruelty and mistreatment.

Allow yourself to reach out for help in finding your way back to hope.

Look for a therapist or counsellor who is skilled in trauma healing or build a good support network up around you. Building hope for a balanced and healthy life, for something better, is the first step toward realizing a life that you always imagined and yearned for.

I had a nice day today. A positive meeting with my support worker. A nice walk with a friend.

Sometimes all you have is hope. Nothing feels right and you have to focus soley on the idea that it can be other than it is one day because otherwise you won't make it. I have so many days like that. And then you go through the motions doing what is good for you in the hope that one day you can feel otherwise.

But then a day like today comes, when I can actually be in the present a bit, instead of just in my hopes for the future.. it is nice to have a good day. Not a perfect day. But a day where it is a little bit more than just the hope.

@Kuma0187 Hey Kuma welcome to the trauma community :) your post is full of optimism and hope and we all need I think to believe things can be different, that we can actually climb out of the rough days and have more positivity in our lives. Each day survived is because you are all strong and you all hope for a better life for yourself. :) I wonder what a perfect day would be for you? I think acceptance that in life there will be hurts, pains, losses, ups and downs as much as we dont wish to experience them, makes us more realistic about our expectations too :)

My perfect day would be the love of my life, my ex, asking me to come back to live with him. It wouldn't matter what happened in the rest of the day.. so long as I was in his arms when bedtime came.

My landlord keep pushing away a stray cat that helps my anxiety. However we cant afford the extra charge to keep her (bingo) mama cat with her baby

It kills me when I have to shoo her away.

She is adorable. I hope Bingo and her little one will be there for a long time to keep you company. Do you happen to have an animal shelter (only one that cares for animals indefinitely) close to you? I only ask because they often provide no or low cost veterinary care, food and supplies if it would be helpful. Your landlord may leave her and her baby alone if you let him or her know you are working with them. It helped me with a landlord who was not very compassionate a few years ago. Animals are so healing, I hope this helps.

@Compassionatelistener108

Our animal shelters take dogs over cats and they push cats on people that are not checked propperly. My brother got a cat and it survived 6 months, we found out afterwards it was sick as other cats were sick there too.

Our landlord keeps telling us to shoo the cats. It drives me crazy. I cant get caught feeding her or they will charge me 25 week for a pet. We cannot afford it.

I am sorry, I didn't explain very well. I meant that many will help you support Bingo and her baby. Fostering helps eliminate the costs but I understand it may not be a good solution. She brings you joy so I was hopeful. I completely understand the financial obligations as I am waiting for a service dog for both traumatic experiences and assistance with counterbalance/mobility. I need to wait for a while too.

@Halogen Thank you halo for holding on to that hope.

I havent been checking in for a while because id lost a fair bit of hope. Not sure if have found any yet but trying to talk more at least. Under alot of pressure to move on both at work and by family. Its hard to.

Work want me to helo cover special care baby unit. Ive refused so far and theyve understood but get the feeling as we lose more staff i may not have a choice. Triggers are there still and flashbacks not stopped tho have agreed to try emdr with therapist and started looking at past traumas on a time line.

Family dont mean to pressure but they are. Hubby is still lost and says not much to look forward to and i know he deserves better. Have asked for a couple of weeks until grandparents memorial to make a decision. Just have to survive until then.

Wishing everyone on here much strength and hope. Hugs

@inventiveOrange1 It sounds like you are dealing with many negatives coming from many different sources. It sounds very overwhelming.

I know how hard it is to assert your needs, but I think you've doing a really good job. It sounds like you're listening to your body and your feelings and keeping tabs on your reactions. Just keep doing what's best for you and holding on. Remember to take care of yourself first :) You can do this.

@Hoxenos thanks. You pretty much said what the therapist highlighted about identifying needs. She said whats happening now is mirroring past reactions where everyone elses needs come first. I guess i always put them as morr important since i dont want anyone else hurt and dont see that i deserve better. Unfotunatley last time it happened i ended up in hospital so desperately trying to avoid that.

Thank you for understanding.

@Halogen

Hello Halogen and everyone. Hope things are going good for you.

Ah, hope. Nowadays, hope is the one thing I have that's holding me together. A hope for a better tomorrow. A healthier self, a better condition. But hope without action or initiative can be counterbalancing. Things have been rough, but some days are better than others. Some days I realize how many lovely people I've met on here, some days I realize how I alone I am in my unhealthy relationship and the fact my family was so abusive.

Often-times it's mixed, a very bitter-sweet kind of taste.

I feel very motivated to towards my future. It's frightening. Intriguing. Suffocating. Alluring. Repugnant. But I really won't know until I get there. I want health in my future. My own mental health, positive friends and co-workers, and a lover that won't drive me crazy. A healthy life with healthy connections.

I grow tired of getting triggered and/or crying only to get a pep talk (from a vastly unhealthy individual)that if not touted as the most helpful and supportive thing is a trigger for their rage. Then they run off after shutting everything down in the house and go sulking in the bedroom with the lights off listening to their fantasy audiobooks. Okay, I went on a tangent. Sorry 'bout that. Relational intelligence. Very important for connections. When I look at these things as a learning experience, something to take wisdom from... it's easier for me to manage. I hope for a bright future with love, liveliness, happiness, and of course hope and passion for things to come. And I wish the same for all of you!

To you!

@CaloenasNicobarica I see you fighting this inner battle. Your brain says a negative thought and then you argue with it. I think that's a really great habit and I know how it feels to do that day in and day out. I feel your exhaustion and frustration. But I'm glad that you can still identify your hope and hold onto it.

I also know that feel about getting tired of hearing the same pep talk and then the person being resentful because it doesn't work every time. My ex used to be like that, he would get so bad that after not being able to cheer me up he'd make me feel guilty like it was my fault. He was so bad with it that in my current relationship, I was scared to tell my partner that I was feeling a bit of a spiral coming on, because saying "yup I'm STILL sad" is paired with these feelings of guilt and shame.

Now I'm the one on a tangent. All I mean is that I love that you are still able to see positives with the negatives and talk yourself around. And learning each time how to do it better is a super important skill. You're doing good work :)

@Hoxenos

Hi Hoxenos! Thanks for saying so and dropping by to share your experience. Also, your user icon! KITTY! Sorry, I love pets. XD

Over the years I've learned it's about these negative patterns that I still have kicking around, but like you said- it sure is draining. It feels like I'm some revolutionary but this revolution still has a long time coming. Resources seem scarce, but somehow there is a spirit still alive. Owning your emotions is something I learned this year-ish. Life certainly is a learning experience.

I'm sorry you had to deal with that kind of person, but it's comforting knowing someone got away from that and survived it to live another day. But wow, pretty creepy how similar our experiences are with that kind of person. I totally get you with the shame and guilt of still being sad. Can see how that's hard to work through, and can see myself behaving similarly in the future. I'm glad it sounds like you have someone stable and loving that actually cares about your feelings and emotions. Brings me even more hope for the future, and also cheers to you. <3

LOL Tangents. It's fine. There are some lovely people on here to tangent at/with. Friends with tangenters myself. XD And thanks again! You're wonderful.

@CaloenasNicobarica My kitty is named Otto and he loves my laptop xD And yeah my current partner is a lot better with supporting me without like... forcing me to "be supported." He really just wants me to be happy, and understands that sometimes that can't happen and it's no ones fault. The right people are out there.

Hope is a powerful but exhaustive thing. I recently took a break from trying to 'get better'. It was a good decision. Beforehand, I was feeling hopeless. Afterward, I have a tiny slice of hope to hold onto again. It's weird. The brain is a mysterious thing. The past few weeks had been rough. I had run out of hope. I had several breakdowns during those weeks, and none of my coping techniques seemed to help at all, adding to my hopelessness. It was awful. Then I remembered: one of my personal rules is that it's okay for me to take a 'break from recovery'. So, I did: I took a break for about a week from all of my coping methods, including 7cups. I stopped trying to cope with how I felt. I allowed my mind to rest, to just exist in that suffering. I allowed myself not to expect anything. It really helped me. I didn't have any breakdowns during that rest, which is strange. In fact, I found some hope again during that fog. It might sound counterintive, but taking a break from recovery really helped for me to find some hope again. I still have the same stressors I had a month ago, but after taking a mental break, I have found some hope again and am ready to continue on with my recovery. I have the strength to get back to practicing my old coping methods, which are having a good effect on me again, and I'm so grateful for that.

So, in summary, for today I guess I am tentatively doing okay?

I am hopeful again for the future, at least temporarily, and that's worth something.

@wontsleepwontwake I think what you said is really powerful. It reminds me of the "It's ok to not be ok". It can feel a bit like you've hit a wall when you're always comparing to yesterday or seeing that you're still not at an end goal. But that all takes time. Recovery can be super exhausting because it's almost like every minute you're reminding yourself of your imperfections.

I think it's great that you were able to be honest with yourself and take the time you need to take care of yourself. Not everyone can identify their needs, and then also be able to actually do them without guilt or something negative. You should be proud of these skills you've developed :)

@Hoxenos - Yeah, it's just like that saying 'it's ok to not be ok,' you're right! I guess sometimes not take caring of ourselves in a sense, can actually be a way of taking care of ourselves, just as long as we agree to get back on the path when we're ready. Some days I do feel like I'm analyzing myself minute-by-minute! It's sort of funny that you mentioned that, because it's so true for me. Maybe not keeping track was part of why I have a little hope again? Something new to think about for certain... I try to practice mindfulness and awareness, which has genuinely helped me figure some things out. But maybe for a moment there, instead of being aware, I was becoming fixated or obsessed with 'getting better.' Maybe it's a finer line than I realized. I have to be more patient with myself. Lots of hard challenges, but your encouragement and the support of others here is really invaluable to me, thank you so much. <3

@wontsleepwontwake That was such an introspective response!! How I keep from getting down on myself and impatient in recovery is I always try to compare myself to 6 months ago, as opposed to yesterday, lest week, last month. Just something about 6 months I can really see the difference and can difinitively see in which ways I've gotten better.
