Traumatic Experiences Community Daily Check In - Saturday January 27th 2018

Happy Saturday everyone! I have a question for you......

Is your glass half full?

Is your glass half empty?

Or are you just grateful to have a glass in the first place - and bonus, it has something in it!

What Im asking is, how do you perceive your world, and does it really matter?

For instance, are you a victim, or are you a survivor? Which word makes you feel most powerful?

Is it true that changing the way you think can change the way you feel?

Gosh, too many questions for one day - sorry about that. But I just wanted to raise the idea of something very much in our power, and ask you to consider how your view of something, your perception, can indeed make the same situation look incredibly different.

And just for fun, take a look at these images. Theyre images that have divided opinion, because some people see one thing, others see different. Theres no right or wrong answer to these, but please consider this - just because someone elses perception may differ to yours, whos to say whos wrong and whos right?

Is this dress blue and black, or white and gold?

What colour are these shoes?

Why not stop by and tell us how your days going? A warm welcome is guaranteed 🙂

A warm post to read once again here :)

Hello everyone :)

I agree that we should not allow for other's to cloud our perception and instead, remain authentic

It's Saturday ... thankful for the much needed weekend :)

@MayaCarino

Are you one of those people who looks forward to the weekend? Much like me, though it goes so quick! We should have a nine day week, with an extra day pre Saturday as wind down day, and another post Sunday as a wind up day, both extra days off of course. I think I could just about handle that :)

@DeborahUK

Yes I am. I agree 100%. Perhaps, the weekend should begin from Friday ~ 3 off days and 4 working days ;) Sounds pretty fair to me

Yeah, whoever came up with this whole working week idea in the first place must have been a bit of an oddball. Only a two day weekend!

Great post and check in @DeborahUK. I like the idea of perspective, and for us to be given a choice as to how we see our situation.

I have had very difficult week. Counseling brought up some very difficult memories and experiences. I have been going to alot of meetings, and celebrated my 13 month sober aniversary yesterday.

Many congratulations are in order. Wow! Thirteen months sober! I really admire your determination, well done. I hope you allow yourself to feel really proud of that great achievement. In anyones perception, that is something to be celebrated!

Good discussion opener.

What caught my eye is calling oneself a victim vs. a survivor. This just reminds me of the "victim complex" vitriol spewed by the average hateful person (ie: not here in Trauma), and I hate that. I think people should be allowed to feel the way they do about what happened to them. Maybe the accuser should open *their* mind to someone else's perspective and get down from their soap box/high chair. Different people have different experiences and different reactions.

Lately I've been thinking about something related: "being normal". We're human. While it is possible that mental health issues may come into play... how on Earth are you supposed respond "normally" to an abnormal situation like trauma? Also, is it any surprise that struggling with mental health is a challenge during/after trauma? Sure, I know I'm not "normal" and I've accepted that, but I'm pretty damn sure I'm human.

Anyways. Just grateful to have a glass right now, hopefully to fill with some milk to enjoy with a cake I'm baking that should be done any minute now. Might get out of the house later for a breather. Otherwise, weekends are the same old story.

@Torremp

Cake? Milk? A perfect match!

Interesting what you say about the victim complex. I don't necessarily believe seeing yourself as a victim has to be a negative thing. After all, if things were inflicted upon you by another, then you were indeed victimised. I guess its how you then perceive that word. Does being a ‘victim mean youre helpless, powerless, forever to be lost and different because of your experiences. Or does it simply say ‘yes, I was a victim, but that wont stop me reclaiming my life. Certainly in the UK, I think the word victim has slightly negative connotations. Victims are to be pitied, protected and pacified. In some ways its similar to the concept of does someone ‘suffer from a disability, or simply live with it?

Anyway, before I ramble too much, I think this is why seeing yourself as a survivor can give some sense of power back. Yes, I was victimised, but I survived. It has a certain strength to it in my opinion. But hey, its semantics. Whats important is how you perceive your situation. So youre right, victim, survivor, whatever.....youre human. Youre valid, you matter, youre not alone.

@DeborahUK Hey how are you? My day/night is going alright. I think that the/my glass is half full and yes I am grateful to have a glass in the first place. I don't know how to perceive my world but I know that everything I do is out of love and yes it matters. Survivor but I do not like to call myself one, Yes I believe changing the way you think can change the way you/ a person feels, my grandmother(rip) always used to say " You got to think positive to get positive" something along those lines lol. I love you <3 makes me feel most powerful I love to say it to someone I love and to be told the same in return.

And to answer the dress and sneaker questions i think that the dress is blue and black. The sneakers I think are gray and blue/green color.

One of the traumatic experiences I have been through is Being a complete outcast that lead to imprisonment which caused isolation in a country. I have watched my own mother being hit on her head. For my protection my parents decided to keep me in the house only allowed to go to school. I was a child, how would I know that the community was treating my family badly. Yet, thats in the past, if I did not go through that I wouldnt of been who I am now today. I will not allow myself to be locked up by it.

I would like to share my favorite phrase: you got two feets, dont you? stand up and keep walking
