No!

No, no, no!

No, no, no, no, no, no!!

Such a short word, but one that can be so hard to say. I wonder how many of you in the trauma community find it hard to say no? I know I do, and Ive frequently found myself doing something I really dont want to do because of my inability to say no.

Why is that I wondered, so I went on a google hunt!

- Seems were just too nice. Many instances of saying yes when you mean no may be down to plain old people pleasing. Not wishing to offend, not wishing to hurt others feelings.

- Maybe we view saying no as a rejection. We dont want others to think badly of us, we dont want others to feel rejected, so ‘no remains on the tip of our tongue, unsaid.

- How about feeling guilty? Perhaps we feel bad to put our needs first. What if theres a consequence to our refusal? What if something bad happens because of it? Sometimes its just easier to say yes.

- And, trigger warning....maybe we said no before, in traumatic circumstances. And we werent listened to or respected. So ‘no becomes a pointless word. Our wishes cease to count.

So a gentle reminder....

- Your needs matter too.

- No is not forever. You can change your mind at a later time if you choose.

- Whats the worst that can happen? Keep any fears about saying ‘no in perspective.

- Dont be so harsh on yourself. In all likelihood the person who asked you isnt judging your refusal, but is just thinking who else they might ask instead.

- The past is firmly in the past. Just because you werent listened to before, doesnt mean you wont be now.

So, are any of you out there struggling to assert your needs? Do you find yourself agreeing to do something when its the last thing you want to do? After me now.....

Three.....

.....Two

One.....

Noooooooooo!!!

Hello Deb and lovely trauma family 💜

I just wanted to let you all know how much Ive appreciated the support Ive received here. Im forever grateful to Kite and Avaray for bringing me here. That sign of compassion (and validation) was timely and vital and you all welcomed me with open arms and support which, again, Im so grateful for.

Im now entering a chapter in my life where Im working to leave the events of the past in the past and honor this life Ive been given in the present.

If things continue to go well, you may not see much of me. I just wanted to let you all know how much I admire your strength to survive and courage to heal. May you all find love, happiness, peace and fulfillment.

And Deb? Im saying no to a worried and frightened life and stepping in to action!

@themainjane

You've genuinely brought a tear to my eye Jane. Partly because I shall miss you, partly because I admire your resilience so much, and partly your words which you have such a gift for.

Yes! Goodbye worried and frightened life, time to step up. I really admire you. Best wishes ❤️

Hi Deborah,

What a wonderful reminder and post. I believe that it takes me a few pictures, many definitive examples of how to say no, and an internal pep talk at times.

For your viewing pleasure, Deb...it sounds something like the following. I hope it makes you smile.

Wait what? nnnn, nnn, maybe, wait!, I think I can, but, I should and maybe another attempt at actually articulating that two letter word 😉

Much love and have a wonderful week🌻

@Compassionatelistener108

Yep, I know that script 😉

Keep going with the pep talks. It does get easier Ive found. Or maybe its just part of my transition into being a grumpy old woman!

Now after me.....umm, let me think, I think so, but wait, ah, nearly forgot, I cant. No, sorry. (Im still working on it too)!

@DeborahUK - Saw this in feed today and thought of this check in :)
