Hey all I love oyu to pieces, This is the second draft of this post due to my laptop just bugging out and me losing everything so sorry if it isn't as good as what I was hoping. This week I'm going to talk about how trauma could effect relationships, this is a thing I'm still trying to deal with so I thought it actually be productive to do research on it and at the end of the day it's a road to healing which is the road we are all on and we need to support each other and help one another in difficult times.

How does trauma affect relationships?

Trauma survivors with PTSD may have trouble with their close family relationships or friendships. The symptoms of PTSD can cause problems with trust, closeness, communication, and problem solving. These problems may affect the way the survivor acts with others. In turn, the way a loved one responds to him or her affects the trauma survivor. A circular pattern can develop that may sometimes harm relationships.

How might trauma survivors react?

In the first weeks and months following a trauma, survivors may feel angry, detached, tense or worried in their relationships. In time, most are able to resume their prior level of closeness in relationships. Yet the 5% to 10% of survivors who develop PTSD may have lasting relationship problems.

Survivors with PTSD may feel distant from others and feel numb. They may have less interest in social or sexual activities. Because survivors feel irritable, on guard, jumpy, worried, or nervous, they may not be able to relax or be intimate. They may also feel an increased need to protect their loved ones. They may come across as tense or demanding.

The trauma survivor may often have trauma memories or flashbacks. He or she might go to great lengths to avoid such memories. Survivors may avoid any activity that could trigger a memory. If the survivor has trouble sleeping or has nightmares, both the survivor and partner may not be able to get enough rest. This may make sleeping together harder.

Survivors often struggle with intense anger and impulses. In order to suppress angry feelings and actions, they may avoid closeness. They may push away or find fault with loved ones and friends. Also, drinking and drug problems, which can be an attempt to cope with PTSD, can destroy intimacy and friendships. Verbal or physical violence can occur.

In other cases, survivors may depend too much on their partners, family members, and friends. This could also include support persons such as health care providers or therapists.

Dealing with these symptoms can take up a lot of the survivor's attention. He or she may not be able to focus on the partner. It may be hard to listen carefully and make decisions together with someone else. Partners may come to feel that talking together and working as a team are not possible.

How might loved ones react?

Partners, friends, or family members may feel hurt, cut off, or down because the survivor has not been able to get over the trauma. Loved ones may become angry or distant toward the survivor. They may feel pressured, tense, and controlled. The survivor's symptoms can make a loved one feel like he or she is living in a war zone or in constant threat of danger. Living with someone who has PTSD can sometimes lead the partner to have some of the same feelings of having been through trauma.

In sum, a person who goes through a trauma may have certain common reactions. These reactions affect the people around the survivor. Family, friends, and others then react to how the survivor is behaving. This in turn comes back to affect the person who went through the trauma.

Trauma types and relationships

Certain types of "man-made" traumas can have a more severe effect on relationships. These traumas include:

Childhood sexual and physical abuse

Rape

Domestic violence

Combat

Terrorism

Genocide

Torture

Kidnapping

Prisoner of war

Survivors of man-made traumas often feel a lasting sense of terror, horror, endangerment, and betrayal. These feelings affect how they relate to others. They may feel like they are letting down their guard if they get close to someone else and trust them. This is not to say a survivor never feels a strong bond of love or friendship. However, a close relationship can also feel scary or dangerous to a trauma survivor.

Do all trauma survivors have relationship problems?

Many trauma survivors do not develop PTSD. Also, many people with PTSD do not have relationship problems. People with PTSD can create and maintain good relationships by:

Building a personal support network to help cope with PTSD while working on family and friend relationships

Sharing feelings honestly and openly, with respect and compassion

Building skills at problem solving and connecting with others

Including ways to play, be creative, relax, and enjoy others

What can be done to help someone who has PTSD?

Relations with others are very important for trauma survivors. Social support is one of the best things to protect against getting PTSD. Relationships can offset feelings of being alone. Relationships may also help the survivor's self-esteem. This may help reduce depression and guilt. A relationship can also give the survivor a way to help someone else. Helping others can reduce feelings of failure or feeling cut off from others. Lastly, relationships are a source of support when coping with stress.

If you need to seek professional help, try to find a therapist who has skills in treating PTSD as well as working with couples or families. For resources, please see our Where to Get Help for PTSD page.

Many treatment approaches may be helpful for dealing with relationship issues. Options include:

One-to-one and group therapy

Anger and stress management

Assertiveness training

Couples counseling

Family education classes

Family therapy

I couldn't bring myself to read all that because it is why I lost my relationship and I logged in this morning because I have to go back to our house, his house, my home that can't be my my home this morning to do some things and I woke up with another nightmare and I feel weak and terrified. Today will be a really difficult day for me, later I am also going somewhere where someone has been bullying me to try to stand up to them. I am not seeing anyone that is just easy to be with and I am desperately lonely and low. I have to leave the house in seven minutes or I will be late and I am not out of bed. I haven't had my phone to call the crisis line for a few nights now because it is broken. Not feeling like I can go on at all. I wish someone was here.

Today I'm a bit surprised and mind blown.I unlocked some new level of strength, energy and not even sure how to call it correctly but it's just feels really overwhelming.:o It's like I removed some blockage and now all flows out like a water.Allowing myself to be who I trully am more and more and it's surprising what I sometimes stumble upon because I never realized that there's so much power within me and this feels like it's just beginning of it.I love to feel strong and powerful and confident in my abilities, fearless but it's also something very new to me as well because I couldn't let this all out and I needed to hold it in to not cause trouble for myself.I'll try to not burn out and put it in some healthy dosages, let it out bit by bit and see what else comes out.:) Very interesting and exciting moment.I change so much and remove so much of all that was needed before to survive so deep down I still not sure who I really am and what I'm capable of.There lays a huge greatness within me it feels and I try to let it out and integrate into who I'm, my daily life, overall life, each area of it.I'm very grateful to be at this stage of healing and really satisfied and thankful to all those people who help me to unfold fully, are besides me during this process.

Hiya Im feeling okay today I finished some school stuff and a few videos. Im a CSA survivor (due to my mother) and very dependent on my Dad (my parents are divorced and he has full custody of me) I know I still have a few years left before Ill be able to go to college but I stil get stressed thinking about it, I barely feel safe out of my Dads sight I dont wanna know what itll be like living away from him with a complete stranger. Im generally distrusting of new people and I wish I wasnt, I second guess myself a lot and am always worried about ulterior motives.

Sometimes I get angry for no reason and have to stop myself before I do something Ill regret. I tend to get jealous when I hear people talk about their mothers and if I think about my own too much I get anxious and need to be alone somewhere to catch my breath. I have a lot of repressed memories and while it doesnt happen often sometimes theyll resurface in a dream and Ill be up the rest of the night because of that.

But I have a loving family and a few loving friends that help me get through things so I do have a good support system and Im thankful for that. I mostly have good days or days that arent too bad so I think Ive been doing an alright job coping.💛 (Wow this was a long post)

Hello, it's my first time in a check-in in this sub community. I want to vent out, I hope it's ok. Lately, I have found triggering things here in 7cups, I'm tired of suddenly finding these things, I feel I can't find a safe place. I feel there's no safe place in the whole world, it's frustrating, scary and it makes me feel hopeless.

On the other hand, I like the post it explains in a clear and kind way and I can relate.

@Softwhispers

I got triggered the other day. Saw the local newspaper and these two sisters coming out about their father that did horrible stuff to them and other people... how he got convicted. I looked at their smiling faces in the paper beaming victory. I felt cynical. While I'm glad for them, if I were to come out about my father or any of my relatives I'd practically have people throwing stones at me and cursing me up and down. When you live in a small town kinda place stuff is like that. Their thing was publicly "acceptable" whereas mine is not, I've been made to be the lesser or crazy one in a lot of people's eyes around here. I cannot tell you how bullying and dehumanizing the people around here can be. It's like the land possesses them or something occult like that. Or y'know...just simple alcoholism, substance abuse, and hatred of anyone living a life different than the rest.

On the other hand, I know what causes such predation. My disassociation has a lot to do with this. Like chickens pecking at the weaker one, they prey until it's depleted. Getting to be in that frontal part of the brain, the brain where alertness and sometimes predatory instinct lurks. So far, keeping busy with my studies has helped. Mindfulness. And being able to identify when I'm starting to retreat into the back of my brain. That helps me curb it and try to keep present. Wrote down ways to combat this on an index card per my psych's request. Keep it close, especially lately.

Thanks so much for the love and hugs, calmLake! <3 Greatly appreciate them. :)

I make an effort to avoid news stuff, especially places like Reddit if I'm feeling not so hot. Much solidarity there. Think I might be the empathetic type because people's moods and news stuff affect me a lot. Had dinner and watched Mushi-shi and am feeling quite a bit better. Should've skipped the Dew, though. @calmLake1999 Thank you for asking not sure why that made me cry but it did. I normally kick pillows. I am feeling like my mind is conflict but that is not new, one parents against the other. It just keeps going around in my head. I am not sure how to explain that further without saying bad things. Plus the medicine keeps making my eyes go in and out of focus. They would be the screaming reason and I am not sure how sort it out. The eye thing will go away once the medicine goes out of my body. *hugs*

@AmalieAnne

That sounds awful, I'm so sorry,, it must be like being in a tug-a-war between parents and that is not good for you.. I hope the new medication settles in soon and stops doing that to your eye sight,, can be very off putting when our senses are out of whack.. Crying can be very cathartic and not necessarily a bad thing.. I am here for you all the way Amalie,, you are a very kind, sweet and compassionate girl! Much love and *big hugs*

@calmLake1999 The medicine is starting to go away a bit so hopefully that means I can go to sleep. I have to stay awake until some of it goes away in case of the breathing thing. I did start to write a poem but then it was making me feel sad so I stoppped. *hugs* Sometimes it is just everything is so big and scary and I am only me. This might be a inapprioate (spelling?) but but *monkey kiss* I think I can go to sleep now so goodnight and thank you smiley
