Traumatic Experiences Community Daily Check-in: Sunday 30th September 2018
Hey Trauma family,
Todays topic is boundaries! You guys asked for it so we are going to delve in together!
I think the topic of boundaries all in one chunk is too big so Im going to break it down and start with physical boundaries.
My mum in law was having a dispute with her neighbour who told her she had to fix a broken fence. The truth was, that fence was legally the neighbours property and therefore she was the one that needed to fix the fence. Sound familiar?
Fences are really important for demarcating areas of ownership, keeping out the neighbours dog, or maybe keeping yours in (although cats can be a bit tricky!!!)
When it comes to humans, we have physical boundaries, it starts with our bodies, the skin protects our organs, it lets air and vitamin D in from the sun, and lets out toxins like sweat. Without it we would be exposed to bacteria and not be able to let in what we need to be healthy and let out things that can be harmful.
Everyone has a right to say what is or isnt acceptable for their body. Its called body autonomy! You have the right to change your mind about things even if you agreed to them before. Like I love hugs, but when Im anxious I dont like to be touched and both are my choice.
We also have physical space around us and we are allowed to say how close someone is allowed to come to us. Some one can be literally in your face and harass you without touching you so physical space is important in make us and others feel comfortable.
Do you feel ok telling people what touch is ok for you? And what isnt?
Are there any physical boundary scenarios you struggle with?
Good morning
hope all is well on the home front
Feeling a bit tired did not get much sleep. The mind has been going in all kind of directions. It's ok I'm trying to get the head settled,
I don't tend to come on here over the weekends, so I just caught up on this check-in today and I want to say how incredibly proud of and impressed by you all I am. It took so much courage for each of you to share your stories and talk about these things, and that's really inspiring to see. And the compassion with which each of you were responding to each other as well gives me so much inspiration and hope. You have each shown such strong character, such wisdom and heart, and such bravery and I'm proud of each of you and confident that these same things are going to be what helps each of you as you heal and grow.
