Traumatic Experiences Community Daily Check-in: Wednesday 19th September 2018
Hi Trauma Family
I was wondering if you have any hobbies? Hobbies are a great part of self care and can be healthy distractions from traumatic memories. They also help us connect with our sense of identity, which can sometimes get lost in trauma or depression. They can give us a new, more enjoyable experience of life in the present too. I know that my most at peace times are when Im making little crafty things and smooshing paint onto paper.
What hobbies do you have?
How to they help you?
What is your favourite thing about your hobbies?
@LifeIsMyCanvas Is listening to music a hobby? Haha, if yes, I guess that's what I do to distract myself quite a bit. It can relax me when I'm stressed, and it can wake me up when I'm numb. Kind of helps no matter how I feel.
@scarletCar296 Listening to music definitely counts. What is yur favorite kind?
@scarletCar296 music is awesome what genre do you enjoy most?
@Kate @CaringBrit I think mostly alternative rock. Kind of emo, haha. Maybe some punk rock and grunge. Music like that mostly. Sometimes a bit of experimental or just anything that sounds good. What about you guys? What music do you like?
@scarletCar296 im not that fussy since i DJ Kate has heard me too so could ask them how they felt but DJin opened up my tastes more country rnb pop light rock some heavy rock depends on band and how loud but my tastes are pretty open to multy genres
@CaringBrit Oh, that sounds interesting. Must be a great feeling to be a DJ I imagine.

@CaringBrit
I like a lot of different stuff but mostly Sci-fi for reading and hard rock or metal for music.
Let me think about hugs.
@practicalIdeal2007
Sorry you're not feeling good today ideal, I hope chatting here with us helps a little.
I really love sci-fi, but I'm better at TV/movies, I think it's awesome you can read books!
Music can be a good release too, picking songs to help you feel better or let out some tears.
*leaving you lots of blankies, pillows and soft things to snuggle in if you want to*
@LifeIsMyCanvas

@LifeIsMyCanvas
writing, painting, reading, and music :) I've found them all to be healing and relaxing
@theindigojournal i highly agree what genres for those that have different genres involved?
@LifeIsMyCanvas
my hobbies are drawing and reading....
they help me distract and writing helps also its a hobby also
how are you today im pretty bad i went to the dentist and cried because my jaw popped and hurt so bad.... i had a root canal started...
@Hope7879 ouch sounds extremly painful hope pain is aweful in every aspect
@Hope7879
ergh root canals are horrible and the jaw popping sounds v painful.
Writing can be so cathartic, it's a great hobby to have. Reading can also be a good escape or a way to learn new things! I've never been good at reading myself, I've always admired those who can concentrate and read books.
@LifeIsMyCanvas
Your precious.. . I admire you for a lot of things how strong you are.. How your still alive .. How amazing you are. . I love your voice so much (not sounding weird promise and I'm not trying to be..) I am saying this to someone older than me. BBut I truly believe your so amazing and sso strong. I will never ever think differently . Never give up love
@Hope7879
Ugh, that sounds painfull. Hope you were able to distract and calm down some with your hobbies
My main hobby is reading. I average a book a day, it takes me out of my head and gives me somewhere to go outside of my body. Really good when I am in pain, I can nearly always read. I love fantasy and romance books :) dunno why but I think different human interactions interest me.
Another hobby of mine is programming and lucky for me that's my job :D I love creating things and feel like people pay me to play every day ahahah.
Finally gardening :D I've not been doing it much because of my migraines but I find gardening really relaxing. Doing something with my hands and not my head.
As for how I am today. I saw a chiropractor and man... I dunno. I think it's my PTSD talking but it felt really... Invasive? I came out so anxious and wound up. I sometimes feel like I am too closed up for people to even help me *sighs*. Who knows. I do feel taller though ahahah xD
@Lilibuth12 I'm sorry to hear your migraines are still being bothersome and painful. What good books have you read lately?
@Kate
I've been listening/reading Tale of two cities by Dickens recently :) outside that I can't remember many because I get through them so fast ahahah I spend longer on classics :D I like to analyse them ahaha.
@Lilibuth12 that might be why it takes me weeks i take it in analyse etc
@Lilibuth12 wow 1 book a day yikes thats awesome takes me weeks lol and i hear you there on the genres they are indeed interesting for sure aww no about the visit feeling invasive
@Lilibuth12
1 book a day
it took me a whole year to read my last book. Well the last book I didn't write lol.
I find human interactions fascinating also. Maybe because I'm also interested in programming and at uni I researched the ways of gathering system requirements being focus on how people will interact with the system and the info they need.
Yup I was a nerd at uni lol
Sorry to hear the migraines are back
, does sitting out in the garden feel nice? I like to just go outside and smell the flowers or the grass smells after the rain mmmm love that smell.
The chiro can be invasive, I think you are brave for going
@LifeIsMyCanvas i have many but my favourites are Art i love drawing being creative then theirs my Gaming and DJin if youve ever attended my DJ event in events room i DJ on my radio station im more than willing too do one just for Trauma for those that want to express through lyrics by requesting many have given awesome feedback on those music is super awesome for those that cant find the words or cant say how they feel but can with a song
@CaringBrit
I love love love drawing
I've not seen many events that are not trauma ones because I tend to be guilty of hiding out in here
It does sound fun though and that could be very healing. Maybe we could think about that for the next event? I'd so love for you to be a part of it!!!
@LifeIsMyCanvas Sure anytime its my very own station the admins have vetted it and approved too no rush on planning and id more than happy be a part of it when i can get links ill share some art i did too i find it very therapeutic i zone out get the same effect DJin n gaming too
@LifeIsMyCanvas
I like going to the gym or just getting out and doing some type or exercise. I feel terrible when I don't go, and it may sound like i'm being I guess dramatic but I've noticed that I am more calm and not really thinking about the trauma after a good workout rather than when I dont do any type of workout.
I also like to occasionally sketch and paint. I'm still trying to figure out how to get my thoughts transfered on to the paper or canvas.
@frankLion761
That sounds very healthy, good on you!!! I used to really love running for the same reason, I think it helps the nervous system flush out all those hormones that cause stress and it definately does have a calming effect.
Painting/sketching can be really rewarding for expression but I can relate to the wanting to get what you are feeling on the the paper in a way that represents what is going on inside for you. I think sometimes we can focus on the skill or maybe our frustrations at not being able to do the technical side of it and that can get in the way of the expression. I found that focusing on the process and maybe the colours was very helpful in adding expression whilst I was learning the more technical side of the skill. I also have 2 books, one dedicated to practicing technical stuff and one is a complete play book... it's a complete mess but I enjoy making the mess at least lol!
Singing and dancing and beating the heck out of my Tamborine
Makes me happy most of the time.
@scarletPear1945
oooo that sounds super fun
I love singing and dancing, i've never had a tambonine but I've always throught that they sounded so pretty!
@scarletPear1945
Im glad you have something that makes you happy. Moving to music really can make you smile
