Traumatic Experiences Community Daily check-in Monday October 16 2017

Hi there, everyone!!

Following in Raven's footsteps I figured it would be wise to introduce myself as well. I haven't really made any background information posts about me and I don't want to bore you with details of my life, but I am a survivor of child sexual abuse, abusive relationships (from being vulnerable with the CSA), had a neglectful family, and have subsequently dealt with depression, anxiety, PTSD, dissociation etc.

I started my healing journey at 19 when I escaped my family situation and 7 years later I am what I would call functional but not yet "successful." I lucked out by having the first therapist I reached out to be a great fit for me, and that I was assertive enough to have my parents pay for some of my therapy. After years of therapy and lessening my PTSD symptoms, but realizing some symptoms didn't go away... it turns out I also fall on the autism spectrum. Surprise!

I've been a listener for 2 years off and on but mostly only did long-term 1 on 1s until reaching out to become involved in this community. I love how supportive this place is and I hope that I'll get to know all of you in some way.

So, to start off, how is your day going? What's a struggle you have faced today? What's a success you've had this week?

And as a bit of a getting-to-know-you, what's your favourite book/movie/tv show? (just pick one to tell me about)

Today I had a really tiring morning and had to nap so I feel like I'm going to be up later than I want tonight >.< A struggle I faced is completing all of my 7cups responsibilities today, and a success I've had is... managing to complete all the 7cups responsibilities I've had laugh

My favourite book is called Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson. It is beautiful and immediate, but also incredibly, horribly sad. It helped me get through my teen years and will always have a special place in my heart.

Ready for this week or not, it has arrived. Mondays are by far the worst because I work overnights on the weekend and then days all week. I slide into Monday exhausted which makes it harder to cope with everything.

If today goes somewhat well, I will slide through the day looking on the surface as if I have it all together but I really don't. I am expected to guide a group at work through some training exercises today and tomorrow and they are not physically exhausting but definitely mentally draining. I will stay late at work to make sure all paperwork is complete and then do it all again tomorrow. The rest of the week will hopefully be easier as I slide back into my office where at least I should have more calm in the day.

I will be keeping each of you in my prayers that today goes smoothly and that each of you are able to take even one small step forward.

@EMSFireChic1985 That sounds like a REALLY rough schedule. I especially like your use of the word "slide" in this post. Not quite falling, but definitely being pulled slowly, not in your control. I know how I would feel if I were in your shoes. When I have this many things to do, and especially if they are mentally draining... my head starts to feel.... fuzzy. Like there's all this fluff, my thinking slows down and it feels like there's stuff in the way of every single thought.

I like that you're looking at the one step at a time and also giving yourself something good to look forward to with the calmer atmosphere. These are both good strategies smiley You're doing amazing work. What do you do to relax and give you "you" time?

@Hoxenos thank you for your kind words, I don't get much me time right now. Between three jobs and college I am pretty busy. And honestly the thing I most enjoy when I have a moment is just sitting quietly at home or when it is nice out going down by the lake and just sitting quietly doing absolutely nothing. Crazy I know :). No books, no thoughts. Maybe some music and NOTHING else. It is truly one of the most grounded and relaxing things I get to do on occasion.

It was a long night and I have yet another travel day today. Usually, I enjoy my days away but today is a little bit more stressful. I am taking both of my parents to see their respective physicians. They are both older and they have some health issues that need a lot of attention. So, I am a little anxious today.

Lets see, I am a survivor of long term abuse. I was very fortunate to be able to work with one of the leaders in the field for several years after being diagnosed with a dissociative disorder. I still have my ups and downs, but have come a long way. I still check in from time to time but can manage with my magical selection of coping techniques most of the time.

I read a great deal, love music, the outdoors, meditation and writing. I also enjoy helping others as they begin their own journey.

I would be hard pressed to pick a favorite book. I am currently reading one of Brian Greenes books as well as The Big Picture by Sean Carroll. I carry one with me for those unanticipated moments of sweet solitude.

I also love to laugh, smile and share my quirky sense of humor with similarly minded friends who I treasure.

I have to run so I can get on the road. Checking in is definitely one of my priorities. I learn so much from you all and it helps me remain grounded.

@Compassionatelistener108 It's so wonderful to hear that checking in is one of the ways you remain grounded. I feel similarly for myself. Thanks for sharing those things about yourself smiley And I used to bring books with me everywhere. I know when my mother was going to buy me a purse my only requirement was that it needed to be able to fit my books comfortably in it haha.

Good luck in your day today and thanks so much for checking in ^^

@Hoxenos Welcome to the check in roster! ❤️

How is your day going?

Just starting, but I've been better (and worse). Rough night last night with both circumstances and symptoms.

What's a struggle you have faced today?

Continue to face/deal with unavoidable household issues while simultaneously managing my symptoms and regulating my emotions. Am being very careful and thoughtful in how I word things and approach my thoughts because I truly like I'm on the edge of falling apart at any given moment. Everything I've written feels like I've downplayed just how awful I feel at the moment, but I don't know how to let it out without shattering myself. A frustrating balancing act. So, I guess that's a part of the struggle too.

What's a success you've had this week?

It wasn't the greatest, but despite my struggles to remain present and grounded amid the storm, I slept last night. So, yay.

@melliotm Thanks so much for the welcome heart (I have yet to figure out how you guys use those little emojis but I am guessing... phone??)

I feel like I know a similar feel to what you're talking about, about not quite being able to admit how bad it's going. Sometimes it feels like a positive, like "hey look at me looking at the positives" but then I remember a thing a friend of mine told me about how they don't feel they can really help me if they don't REALLY know how bad it is. What they said... well it's not so much that I want people to help me... but maybe if I'm not admitting to myself how bad it is... then I don't reach out for the help I need either? I think I do it because I'm ashamed. I don't want to admit to them or me how bad I am. That would mean maybe I'm not improving as much as I wish. It would mean that I still have bad days, bad weeks, bad months, despite working SO HARD to get healthy. I guess it's how I shield myself from feeling helpless.

At the end of the day, I think it's a coping strategy like any other, and if it works for you and helps you get through these horrible times, then it's ok to use it. My therapist used to say "fake it til you make it" like it was a catch phrase. It felt wrong but I did what I had to do... and I still do, often. It sounds like it's a strategy that you trust, so I think that's wonderful :)

Sleep yessssss. I was worried I wouldn't have a good sleep last night because I napped during the day, but it was a success!! Aw yeah sleep!!

@Hoxenos Yeah I'm posting from my 📱, hence the emojis ❤️⛺🐢

I try my best not to hold my feelings in, or hide them (while at the same time try not to retraumatize myself). Cups has been a good support base and has helped me face and embrace a lot of difficult feelings/thoughts/memories/situations. Allowed me to be more vulnerable and also accepting of my vulnerability. Faking it only allowed me to make it so far before reality asserted itself with a full breakdown. A lot of it has to do with what you mentioned above on how mental/emotional strain manifests. There's just too much for me to process at the moment...head is spun and I'm having to manage triggers left right and centre.

I'm trying my best and that's the bottom line. And I feel like utter s*** and can't find the right way to approach or explain, which makes it hard to get support that I need. Which I'm trying to accept. Patience and self compassion all that. 🙃❤️⛺😬🐣😢

At the moment I feel like I am surrounded by too many sounds, too many thoughts/memories, too many feels, too many triggers. Trying to ride it out and just be overwhelmed and accept the resulting emotional flashbacks instead of fighting them. Not worry about having to clearly and concisely explain what is wrong when I am having difficulty making sense of the mish mash.

Even though I feel unsafe and finding it hard to refute the toxic lies of inner critic, am still worthy of compassion and support.

Trauma sucks is the bottom line and I'm trying my best. And it's hard, and I feel helpless and weak against the tide that has swept over me. Trying to stay anchored to the present moment.

Trying.

Trying...

Mondays have a long pattern of being extra challenging for me. My spouse is physically ill at least once a week, and today they are not feeling well, so I feel even less supported than usual. Our vehicle isn't working so we have been borrowing rides from coworkers for a while, which adds to my stress and makes me feel like a real burden. At my work, we start Mondays with a very long-winded meeting. This week I am juggling several projects that have equal high priority. I have no support with my workload although I've mentioned several times that I'm burnt out and overwhelmed. They just don't care and have no interest in hiring someone else to assist me. Sometimes this impossible workload gives me some reprieve from my personal anxieties, but often it just piles on. Today is a pile-on day. I'm overwhelmed. I want to go home but will stick it out somehow...

@wontsleepwontwake - Someone at my work just made my day... They were in the meeting this morning. They came up to me just now and asked if I was okay. Usually this really bothers me, but they had such compassion in their voice. They said, "I want you to know that I hope things work out or get better. whatever it is." I told them all that has been pressuring me lately. They listened. They cannot help with my workload, but they let me know that they understood. They gave me a hug. It was all I could do to keep from crying. I thanked them profusely. It was the most meaningful gesture anyone in the real world has made towards me in weeks... If you know someone else who is struggling in your workplace or wherever, just let them know that they're not alone. It means so much.

It is very nice to meet you. I hope you will enjoy your new responsibilities and they are helpful to your own personal journey.

I am still new here, but have really enjoyed the site so far. People seem to genuinely care and have been very respectful. :)

My struggles today had to do with having to reschedule my first Visit with T...but it worked out. She was very understanding and willing to work with me.

My accomplishments today made me really happy. My apartment manager said that we can start holding peer support meetings and social group gatherings, in our community room, for our residents with mental disabilities. I am so excited for that because we have several residents who could benefit from that.

She also said that I could hold a meeting to help get our residents working together to make our apartments safer. Like a neighborhood watch thing but for just our building. She also said that we can put in an anonymous drop box for those don't feel okay talking to the office about things. I think it is a good first step to raising awareness about the crime in our building.

Favorite all time movie is Disney's Beauty and the Beast.

Favorite TV show right now (it changes a lot) is Switched at Birth.

I haven't seen it yet. I think about it when I see it on netflix...but I too am worried that I won't like it. I also worry that the live action might have a stronger violence to than the animated version. I don't do well with violence on tv.

@Hoxenos

Hi Hoxenos, sorry to reply so late, but it's been a long, tough day for me, & it's still Monday where I live. Thank you for stepping up to do daily check-ins for this community. I very much appreciate that you were open to sharing more about yourself. We have some similarities in our backgrounds & issues. And, I had the experience of receiving several MISdiagnoses on top of my PTSD & severe depression, and despite being hospitalized multiple times, working with several therapists, and trying all kinds of treatments & therapy modalities, I didn't make much improvements.

And, it wasn't for a lack of trying hard on my part, but therapist after therapist quit when I wasn't making "enough" progress in areas (social & relational) they wanted to see me make gains in. And, finally I came to the conclusion that perhaps I wasn't making "progress" in therapy because no one REALLY knew (or had a clue) what??? was really wrong with me. I agreed with doctors regarding my diagnoses of severe depression & PTSD because I had endured such a horrible combination of abuses throughout my childhood & teen years. And, unfortunately, my resiliency, much like elastic, could only be stretched so far before it snaped...& broke.

Long story shortened up..I finally went and underwent 3 long days of neuro-psy testing, interviews, & evaluations...and the results concluded that I had Autistic Spectrum Disorder. Which explained a LOT as far as my oddly, off-center-behavoirs & communication issues went, but as an "adult" on the spectrum, I was at a loss at how to get "better," or at least make progress when ALL the treatment and therapies near, or far...were geared toward young children.

I struggle a lot, mostly with depression, lonliness, rejection, and being MISunderstood. Today was an unusually bad day of making a mess outta my life, as opposed to my usual, run-of-the-mill awful days. My struggle today had to do with my going to my boss about a situation at work that troubles me to no end. She said she'd keep an eye on the situation, but instead of doing that, she put a very long, detailed note of "generalized" chastisement regarding the situation...making it unmistakingly aimed toward the employees/offenders it applied to.

And, because these individuals knew last week that I was really uncomfortable and unhappy about the things they were choosing to do instead of what they were being paid and expected to be doing on-the-job. To explain the situation better, we are teachers in a child care center/preschool, and the "work" being neglected by teachers (I was suppose to be assisting), was "meeting the crucial care & safety needs of the children," I felt I had to speak up. I wanted to be a voice for the very young (ages 1 & 2) who didn't have the ability to speak up for themselves.

Hox, I feel like the harder I strive to do the "RIGHT" things, or do things the "RIGHT" way, or for the "RIGHT" reasons.. the more things go WRONG beyond estimation and imagination. I feel in my efforts to marginally get by in a world I SO don't fit into...I've managed to turn most everyone against me. I wish I could just crawl deep down into the hole I keep digging for myself and stay down under... and stay out of trouble.

In closing, my favorite TV show is The Good Doctor. It is the first time I ever saw a person (real, or otherwise characterized) who mirrored my broad range of stuggles so closely, so clearly, & with such sensitivity. "Dr. Shaun Murphy" could have been my identical twin brother.

One more thing before I close, could you, or someone else who has the "powers-to-be" please correct the typo with my username on the Tag list so I'll get notifications? There is an added epace that needs to be deleted so it will tag me. It should be @caterpillargirl. I think someone recently must have accidently added a space between "@" and "caterpillargirl" and it dislodged me from receiving notifications. Thanks.

Hoxenos OP October 17th, 2017

@caterpillargirl Ugh that's super frustrating about your misdiagnoses. I really lucked out because I basically found a therapist that was as specific for my issues as I could find and I specified that I wanted a woman and everything. Honestly I think I just lucked out with my google search and the fact that there was a centre specifically for child abuse survivors in my city. I really feel like therapists who aren't specialized in abuse just don't realize how many disorders are at play at any given time. I mean I probably had severe depression, anxiety, PTSD, eating disorder, and was in an abusive relationship with background in child trauma and mild BPD and autism. It's really tough to find the right therapist that is able to handle all of that.

I'm pretty sure it was 5 years of constant work before I started seeing ANY improvement at all, so I hear ya :(

That's really rough about the problems at work. I can't imagine how I'd feel if I made a valid complaint at work, wanted it to be confidential, and then my boss outted me like that. That would seriously freak me out and I feel your pain *hugs*

I guess... the way I would try to deal with it is try to look inwards as much as possible. You did what you thought was right, and I think it's really great that you stood up for the children, as I'm sure if you're like me you're especially sensitive about taking care of them. I would try to take pride in that, and to push how the adults feel aside. You were doing your job, doing what's right, doing what you stood for. That is something to be proud of, in my opinion. I know that it sucks to work with people that you're in a tricky situation with, though so I get that :( But at the same time, maybe their opinion is worth less because of their actions? I don't know.

I've only seen one episode of that show. It was either the first or the second, the one where he gets the job. It seems like a really good show though, and I plan to watch more of it.

As for the notifications, I will make sure that it's fixed whenever I do it, but I'm pretty sure the problem isn't with the form we copy from, I think it is the pasters error, so my b there >.< As long as we copy from the forms list it should be ok.

Thanks so much for taking the time to check in and introduce yourself, caterpillar :)

Thank you for taking the time, effort, and energy to read and reply to my post. I appreciate all your support, encouragement, & wise words. I have tried really hard to take your words to heart, but tonight I am at a really, REALLY bad place mentally, emotionally, & physically. Today was a really bad day at work (again)...with the director putting back in the classroom with the the three teachers she knows dislike me, bully me, and say ugly, untrue things about me. As I previously shared yesterday the director betrayed my confidence by taking the concerns I shared with her in private, and putting them, detail by detail, word for word, in the "public" staff log. And, shortly after posting that note in the log, she moved me into the room with the three teachers who were at the center of my concerns. And, because those teachers knew the note in the log was aimed at them, and that it only could have been me who spoke up, it only caused more problems for me yesterday, and escalating problems when the director AGAIN put me in that room to assist them. And, as an aside, what frustrates me is I have two college degrees, some grad school, and have more years experience (working with young children and families) than years these other teachers have been alive, and the lead teacher who treats me the worst doesn't have a college degree. Yesterday that teacher kept making unkind sarcastic remarks about me, and I just did my usual "aspergers" thing which is to reply/respond to questions by just stating truths & facts. This person told me, "In here it's 3 against 1, so you're out numbered." I've gotten to know this teacher when she started 3 months ago, and she's not a very healthy person, mentally/emotionally. She even admitted to me when she started that she needs to see a therapist, but she never has. She knows I see a psychologist, because I told her therapy, at least from my experience can be really helpful. She is an expert at putting on facade, which is one thing that I can't master. My affect/facial expression is pretty much a blank look, "poker face." I talked the director again, sharing that her very detailed note in the Employee Notebook/Log (pointing the finger at me as the whistle blower).Tues was a bad enough day, but at 9 PM my supervisor/day care director txted me to in for me that she's firing me. I cried SO hard last night after I got that txt that my eyes were practically swollen shut. She's giving me the ax because (SHE &) some teachers at our center personally don't like me. I'm not there to win a peer popularity contest, I'm there to love and care for all the children placed in my care. But facets of my aspergers make me the odd man out, the butt of jokes, and the source/means of others gossip. She said U can stay up until Dec. & then she will no longer put me on the schedule or give me any more hrs. And she said I'm not allowed to discuss any of this 'dismissal' with anyone at work. Part of me thinks if some of the teachers who do like & appreciate how hard I work, and how passionate I am about working with infants, toddlers, & prechoolers), they might challenge our bosses decision to let me go. But, mych like me, they have rent & bills to pay, so they'd probably stay put of my troubles for fear they'd be next to get axed if they associated with me, or stood up for me. You might think it is for the best that I move on and find a better job, but it is eXtraordinary hard to find a new job (ANY job) at my age and with my disabilities/challenges. I just moved this month to better housing, & without a job, and/or employment income, I won't be able to pay my rent. And, that will will me I'll get evicted, become homeless, and lose everything I have, including my dogs i'm so incredibly upset and sick of being unwanted, unliked by others, and of unable to maintain employment. So many people (past & present) want to get rid of me, &/or absolutely want nothing to do with me.I wish I would just die so no one could be cruel, and unkind to me, or get rid of me. Sorry this msg is so long. I just feel very alone with my continuous bombardment of serious problems. I'm being burried alive by them.

Ok. I should be working - and I will soon - but wanted to say that I understand this type of situation fairly well from my own experiences.

I worked in a daycare and I loved my babies. And Altho I was glad to see them grow and progress as they should, I felt sad and protective of them because I had to give them up to the class next door. We shared a kitchenette and bathroom with them so could often hear/see what was going on next door.

Theyd be impatient and mean with the little ones. I saw one jerk a baby up by his arm. They were forceful with naptime. They didnt try to stimulate their minds. Theyd come to us, a few of them near the end of the day as numbers dwindled and classrooms combined. My co-worker and I would try to nestle them back into our arms and give them some comfort.

There was nothing that could be said to the director about them short of starting a war. Theyd been their forever.

And although I admired my co-worker because she loved them as much as I did, she often put me on diaper duty and bottles while she played and snuggled babies.

We took from our min wage to have some clothes on hand because not all families supplied like they should. We bathed feverish babies and fed them well. Some came in ravenous and filthy after being home for the week nd.

Gvt daycares have strict rules but still daycares are not always great for the very ones in their charge - the young and vulnerable.

As for your co-workers, I suggest letting it go. Working together is best for the children.
