Wednesday check in with 🔥 02/10/21
Hiya peeps welcome to the Wednesday check in with you friend 🔥.
Hope you all are doing pawsome today, but if not that's ok too.
Icebreaker: if you could live in a video game world, which game would you choose?
Today's topic is on dealing with trauma through courage!.
What is the true meaning of courage?
Mental or moral strength to venture, persevere, and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty.
Courage, It’s the stuff of heroes, right? Frodo with the Ring in Mordor, William Wallace and the uprising, Henry V once more into the breach, ‘Sully Sullenberger’ parking his broken plane on the Hudson.
‘Courage’ isn’t necessarily a word we think of as all that relevant to recovering from trauma. But I think it’s literally at the heart of everything we do. It takes courage to recover and heal from trauma. It takes courage to make the changes in your life that can lead you to a safer and more secure place. And it takes courage to come in touch with painful feelings and unbearable memories and discuss them. Courage gives you strength to face your pain or grief. Courage enables you to overcome fear. Courage is being open, honest, and truthful with yourself and how you express your feelings.
It’s true: the past is the past, what is done is done, and the best way to live life is to keep moving forward.
But when you’re a trauma victim, the past is never out of reach. It’s haunting the edges of everyday life, threatening to destroy any happiness or sense of safety you might erect Trauma is one of the most difficult things to talk about. We are afraid to speak about our own trauma and we are afraid to hear about others’.It’s messy, scary and uncomfortable.
There is no easy answer and no quick fix to the brokenness that results from traum.
Courage emanates from both the head and the heart. All transformation in life takes courage, and overcoming trauma is no different. After trauma, we can sometimes feel disconnected. In moments like this, take time out to be quiet and find the courage from that spot within you, and notice what it feels like. It is this energy within that helps you take one step further to moving beyond trauma.
The idea of living a big, brave life going forward may seem far fetched, but with a little patience and a bit of courage we can live a brave life. Constructing a post-trauma identity is all about choosing who you are,The objective is for the past to become a very tiny part of your very large, confident, capable, and free self.
Questions of the day:
What have you done that took courage?
What's something courageous you can do today?
A few quotes.
“Courage is not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it.” – Nelson Mandela
Just imagine becoming the way you used to be as a very young child, before you understood the meaning of any word, before opinions took over your mind. The real you is loving, joyful, and free. The real you is just like a flower, just like the wind, just like the ocean, just like the sun."
~don Miguel Ruiz
“You are not a side effect of your life, you are an active participant in your own well-being.”
P.T., a 40 year old woman, reflecting on what it means to face herself in psychotherapy.
“Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom.” Aristotle.

@Fireskye13 Yesterday I was doing premarital counseling with my fiancé and I had to bring up my PTSD to the counselor and how it affects our relationship (nothing awful, it just made our dynamic a little different & I had to explain that to the counselor for background context) and normally when I talk about my trauma and how it effects me I tear up or cry, and I kept it in! That felt courageous for me :) (TW: death of loved one) I am feeling really sad though, cause one of my great uncles died yesterday & it was technically his choice ("do a procedure that could save him but decrease quality of life, or just let what happens happen" thing, and he chose not to do the procedure) so I can make my peace with it knowing it was his choice, but my grandpa is taking it really really hard cause they were really really close, and he just got told by the doctor that he can't leave his house or have visitors because he's still recovering from covid and even just a cold could be enough to reignite the infection, so he can't even go to the memorial service, and we can't go up to visit and comfort him :( my grandma died only about a year and a half ago, so with this too, I'm kinda scared he might die of a broken heart or loneliness... he remarried, so he has his new wife with him and their doggy, but he's still super upset... Sending hug vibes to everyone <3 you never know who needs it
(Sorry about the lack of spacing, I typed it on my phone and apparently it didn't wanna cooperate)

Thanks for sharing the articles. I liked this part from it:
"So I had to learn to separate out my internal feelings from external reality. They were both valid. But they didn’t always correspond. I could feel rejected whilst not actually being rejected. This was a revelation. And so courage.
Courage is when we feel unsafe on the inside, but the external reality is different, and we act according to the external.
That en-courage-ment then helped build my courage: that’s what encouragement does. No-one ever scaled mountains because someone was shouting at them, telling them how pathetic they are and how they’ll never reach the top. We need to take this seriously."
@purpleWheel873
Hiya Purple thx for checking in today,
Ima glad you liked them, I hope you find something useful in them.

I'm telling my mom what happened to me soon. I'm scared. But I'll be courageous.

Hey Sail ❤️
You're right, disclosing what happened is super terrifying. It's a big step to take, so I'm really proud of you for choosing to share that with your mom. It's okay to be scared, that's completely normal. No matter what happens, you'll always be a valued member of our community, and we'll always be here for you ❤️ You are not alone in this ❤️

I got into therapy two years ago to deal with the abuse I went through as a kid. It took courage to do that I think. Everytime I open up about it it feels like a courageous act, even though its hard and makes me feel vulnerable every time. But that's how we heal I suppose.
@crimsonSpruce612
Yes, I agree that it must have taken a lot of courage to go to therapy for the abuse you experienced. ❤️ Sharing your story and opening up to others is not easy at all, and feeling vulnerable about it is completely normal, which is what makes this a true act of courage ❤️ I'm glad to hear that you've been able to talk about what happened and slowly heal from what happened. Thank you for sharing with us today ❤️ Have a gentle day
@hopebeyondpain Thanks so much hope
Those words mean a lot to me.
@crimsonSpruce612

@Rebekahwriter13
Hey Rebekah, thank you for checking in with us today ❤️ The Sim's world is a great choice, I think I would enjoy that a lot
Good job for mustering the courage to write and talk it. It can't have been easy, and I'm really proud of you for taking that step. You're doing an awesome job ❤️ Everyone heals at their own pace, and it's okay to be afraid ❤️ Facing your fears and nightmares might not be easy, but I believe in you. We're here for you if you ever need our support. You are not alone

Icebreaker: If I could live in any video game world it would definitely be Animal Crossing. Isabel and I would be best friends no doubt.
What have you done that took courage?
I went to my doctor last week and opened up about my stress, anxiety and depression, and a past trauma that I have never talked about with anyone in the past 8 years. I actually burst into tears when he asked me what happened and he was so supportive and sincere.
What's something courageous you can do today?
Something courageous I can do today is actually what I'm doing right now. I have always been scared to talk to a psychiatrist (or anyone for that matter) about what happened to me. Today I was able to overcome that and join this amazing community. I talked to contentedKitty23 and she was super friendly and made me feel so welcome. I'm looking forward to this journey of recovery and finally getting past this.
@brightSkies587 Welcome and I'm glad to hear you're starting to get the help and support you need. Glad to have you here as part of your healing journey :)
@brightSkies587

@Fireskye13, Hiii! Seeing the word 'courage' literally reminds me of the cartoon, Courage the Cowardly Dog.
Icebreaker: if you could live in a video game world, which game would you choose?
I want to live in the Pokemon world.
It must be nice to take care of an orange chick that can breathe fire or any random creatures found in the game.
Questions of the day:
What have you done that took courage?
It's something small like sending an email regarding my school activity to a teacher. Thankfully, my big brother helps me.
What's something courageous you can do today?
I have no idea right now hahaha.
Have a nice day!
@SnippyHam
Heyyy! ❤️ Yes, that's what I was thinking of too! I always thought the name of the dog was a clever joke.
Ooooh, the pokemon world is amazing, I think I'd love it there too! I'd love to interact with all the pokemons and play with them. Do you have a favourite pokemon? The little flaming pokemons are adorable, but I've always had a soft spot for pikachu 🥺
Aww, as someone with social anxiety, I can really see why that can be a real struggle ❤️ I'm really proud of you for going through with it. It sounds like you have an awesome big brother, I'm really glad to hear about how he helps you with these things ❤️
Living is courageous. Even if you can't think of anything specific right now, You're already doing amazing just for being here and living ❤️ Good job
Have a warm and gentle day ❤️
@hopebeyondpain, Hello!
Yes! I'm glad that's your impression as well.
Pikachu is cute. Why do you like it? I have lots of favorites, but I'll choose Blastoise because it's a badass turtle with water cannons.
Thanks. Anxiety sucks. Even a single phone call is difficult for me. It's even worst when people don't understand. Anyway, Good luck in facing your struggle! :)
"Living is courageous" sounds inspiring. I'll try to remember that.
Have a nice day too.
@SnippyHam
Hey there! To be completely honest, I haven't watched a lot of pokemon, so pikachu is the one that's left the biggest imporession on me. 😅 It's like getting to meet new, awesome people all the time, but still wanting to spend time with a friend you've known for ages, even if the new people you're meeting are fun and exciting to be around. I once saw a movie where pikachu's story arc was particularly heartwarming in, and I've just really liked him ever since ❤️
Blastoise looks amazing. I really like Squirtle too, he's just adorable. I've always admired the designers and artists who worked on these pokemon because of their creativity in creating each of these pokemon. Eevee is one of my favourite examples of this.
I understand ❤️ Even if no one understands, your struggles and feelings are still valid! Thank goodness for an anonymous online platform like cups where it's easier ❤️ Good luck in facing yours too!
Have a lovely day ❤️
@SnippyHam
Hiya ham pawsome to see you!
