Dissociation

Idk if you can call it disassociating but I have this major problem where my body almost shuts down.

Me and my partner tend to argue alot and constantly yelling. The more I get yelled at the more my body just shuts down. I feel like I can't move, speak, I feel like I can barley breathe or control my breathing. My thoughts scream at me while this is going on and it happens more and more frequently. I don't know what it is but it's really scary. Nobody understands when I talk about it.

I don't experience panic/anxiety attacks, but reading stuff here on cups that kinda sounds like what you might be experiencing? I'm not entirely sure of course, but I think dissociating is more like zoning out, and the symptoms you said you're experiencing sound more like an anxiety attack? I'll admit I googled it but idk. I hope your brother stops yelling at you, and you can find healthy ways to cope. Good luck! Please stay safe out there.

It's hard to tell if it's dissociating or a panic/anxiety attack, but it definitely sounds like a nervous system response.

It reminds me of freeze from what you said. In that you feel so threatened in those moments that your nervous system kicks in and says "freeze! Don't move" and then your body just freezes and internally you feel your breathing, but you can't move your body.

Dissociation is more of a flight response a lot of times too for some people, but i think it could be considered freeze as well. It's a way of your brain escaping the moment (fleeing) to find safety internally.

Whether dissociation or not it definitely sounds like a level of panic or anxiety that triggers your nervous system's survival response and that's never a good time!

Hello ,

Dissociation has many faces besides the well known and most common one like zoning out . As I percieve your message your having an inner conflict .Dissociation can be a response to a situation like you discribed.

I am not a therapist to make this clear but a very intrested human being and client since a very long time so feel free/invited to post if you want to

"many faces" can be derealization ,depersonalization, fugues, amnesia, trance like episodes over to physical symptoms like numbness, loss of body sensations, seizures or other neurlogical/functional responses like synkopals. Its also likely that these can be comorbid or followed by panic attacks/anxiety attacks as they are also a response.

All the best

I am diagnosed DID and am with others bout the unsure if it could be panic attacks or disassociation or both. I think of the whole fight, flight, or freeze response. I freeze, therefore, some symptoms you were talking about are actually things I experience when triggered... Some of my alters experience panic attacks so in a freeze state I can go though all of the symptoms you mentioned. You are not alone. I understand how scary it can be when you feel like your whole body is just shutting down and unable to work. I hope you find the support and help that you need.

I don't have the experience to know if that's what it is, but I am experiencing the same thing. I never had it to this extent before. Its very hard to think and communicate what I want to say. My mind is racing, but its a struggle to get the words out. Its like my mind can't do two things at once, honestly.when I do talk, I'm disconnected from it being me, and have a hard time remembering or thinking spatially or abstractly. My anxiety... my whole body is tense, and I'm shaking, sometimes crying, but in my chest, I have a feeling of panic. I have a history of trauma and ptsd, and I've had the disconnect feeling, out of body, it seems, but never like this. I was just in the er for a ct scan, and I think it was a combination of things that made me react like this. I'm wondering if it will pass, or I broke my brain somehow. I'm not sure what the trigger was. Mindful exercises have helped a bit but its too hard to focus and that fact makes me anxious. Its hard to read and comprehend. I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this.
