ACoNs: Those Who Were Raised by Narcissists or Dealing with Narcissists
Howdy, it's Imp.
Made this thread for other ACoNs.
It's a place for us to share our stories with no judgement and to receive support.
I don't see many places really on here about this particular issue, so I thought I'd create this thread. 😊
For those that are dealing with narcissistic parents, relatives, bosses, etc, here are some notable terminology and strategies to deal with such difficult people:
ACoNs - Adult Children of Narcissists
FLEAS - Frightening Lasting Effects of Abuse, basically, these are traits that ACoNs picked up from their abusers. With time and baby steps, it is possible to heal and remove these traits...
Flying Monkey [FM] - These are people that the narcissist uses to receive information from their victim in a round-a-bout way. [ex. The Nmother uses the victims siblings to gather information on the victim.]
FOC - Family of Choice are the people that the ACoNS consider family, not necessarily by flood. They are the ACoNs loved ones and support.
FOO - Family of Origin are the people related by blood to the ACoNs.
Gaslighting - This is a type of mental abuse that the narcissist uses to cause self-doubt in their victim, and spin stories to make the narcissist the victim, when they are the abuser. [ex. "You're always so messy!" even if you always clean up, and the narcissist never cleans...they'll make it seem like YOU are always the issue...until slowly you start believing them.]
Gold Child [GC] - The favourited child of Nparents, typically gets treated the best and is usually spoiled. Sometimes, the GC turns into a Nsibling OR they have a bad case of FLEAS.
Grey Rocking - This is a method to cut of "nsupply". In other words, you must act as BORING as possible, no emotional replies, no provocation, must provide vague information to the narcissist to prevent them from disturbing you.
LC - When a person goes low-contact with an NPD person.
Love Bombing - This is when the narcissist will become very loving to their victim out of nowhere, usually after gaslighting them, to keep their victim from leaving...
N - Stands for Narcissist
NC - When a victim goes no-contact with an NPD person.
NPD - Narcissistic Personality Disorder...which is incurable.
N-supply - This is any type of emotional energy that the narcissist feeds off of to abuse their victim.
Ovary Donor - Alternative name for a narcissistic mother that you feel no attachment to.
Scapegoat [SG] - The least favourite child of the Nparents who gets blamed for everyone...The person who gets abused.
Sperm Donor - Alternative name for a narcissistic father that you feel no attachment to.

There was another website I would normally add here due to the wealth of knowledge but...
The last experience I had with their forum was very bad. 😕
They are not very supportive and are quick to point fingers, which is unfortunate for a support group.
It's more supportive on this website. ❤️
Feel free to share what's going on currently in your life, or you may also ask for help/advise, or just share your background! We're here to listen and support! 😊 Maybe we can even schedule a time to go to the Trauma Support Circle to talk about such experiences? Let's discuss!

@ImpudentIncognito thank you for the post. It helped me understand myself better. There was also a term for parents who wanted to enforce education on their children and needed them to be successful. Can you remind me of the term it was a word that started with "a" so like a....... parents. Altis, alter.. something like that! Also, thanks so much because calling my mother an ovary donor feels a lot better honestly. That made me feel really good
@navyAcai8433 There's a different term for that, but it doesn't start with an A...They're called "Tiger Parents". My ovary donor is a "tiger mother". Usually, it is culture related, but I think many immigrant parents tend to act like this, unfortunately, like mine...
Tiger Parents are as you described, EXTREMELY invested in their child/children's success, that they see their child/children as an extension of themselves, rather than their own being.
I feel you on the ovary donor/sperm donor thing. I don't feel close to my mother at all.
Although I do not speak to her, she is down on my phone as her first & last name.
She does not feel like a mother to me, and only recently decided to try and be one, but is still highly verbally abusive and rude. She's no longer physically abusive, as I'm older and stronger. I can protect myself better but...she would probably send my brothers after me (I'm a woman, and their men so...) so I don't stand a chance.
I don't talk to any of my intermediate family though, therefore, I don't have to worry...
Except, I was talking to my younger brother, but I feel like my Nparents might start using him as a flying monkey. I might have to cut him off soon.
@ImpudentIncognito thank you for this thread, and I really hope I can get some help here.
I have BPD which means I have an extraordinary fear of abandonment, and needless to say I've probably pushed everyone in my life away before they could abandon me, yet I still feel I've been abandoned. But that's a totally different subject. I only brought it up to give a little more context to my dilemma.
I've been in a relationship with someone who I THINK might be a narcissist for the past ten years. I can understand why he has most of the "negative" traits he does, ie: Nothing EVER being his fault is most likely a survival tactic he developed because he was always blamed for everything growing up, warranted or not. But even with the understanding, it still makes for a toxic relationship, and it's just gotten worse year after year.
Sometimes I think I can deal with it, and think that I can't leave him because I'm the only one who's ever stuck by him, but mainly the GUILT I feel, just THINKING about leaving him is excruciating. So I can't imagine what it would feel like if I actually did leave. And the guilt is derived from feeling that if I did leave, I'd be abandoning him. And to make my guilt even greater, I feel that my having stuck with him for ten years makes my abandoning him now all that much worse.
The guilt is there because I KNOW what it feels like to be abandoned, especially if you don't know why. And I really think he wouldn't know why. Of course, he wouldn't listen to me even if I tried to explain it to him. But even if he did know why, I could NEVER make someone feel that pain intentionally.
He wouldn't feel pain if he's a narcissist, you say. He won't really care that YOU leave, just that he was losing his supply if he's a narcissist, you say. But what if he's not? What if I'm overreacting? What if he's just a different kind of person than I am and doesn't need, or expect to have to give, the attention I want? Maybe he's lived by himself so long he doesn't feel the need to share things, or have deep conversations. Because maybe he may have a lot of faults, but then what about the multitude of faults I have? I'm no angel, trust me (despite the name!) 😁
Don't get me wrong, I see it when he tries to turn things around on me, and everything else, but what if I bring out the worst in him by my insecurities? I do have BPD, remember. Maybe if I change, he would, too.
There are days I can't stand him and others where I can't imagine life without him. Oh, and he hasn't brought up any of the things I've mentioned, so I'm not "doubting myself" due to him manipulating me.
I don't think.
I JUST DON'T KNOW ANYMORE! There's other extenuating circumstances as well. Such as we have a really bad living situation right now, we have no money, and no transportation. Those kinds of things could be major factors in how our relationship is at this point, too.
But I DO know that if my leaving will really hurt him badly, I couldn't live with myself.
I sure hope I'm making sense...but thanks for reading this far! 🌹

He does not have to have a diagnosis for the relationship to no longer work.
I notice you mention that your living situation is not good. Would this be true if you lived alone or with a different roommate or partner. Would he be different if you left? Can it ever be better if you stay?
Not asking you to answer these publicly BTW, but rather to ponder them.
I realize now that I grew up with Narcissist in the home. I married a covert narcissist whose mother was a grandiose. It took me two decades of marriage to finally figure out what was going on.i looked up traits and behaviors and bumped unto a website that has helped me immensely over the years.
Outofthefog. net
It has resources and a forum.
I have been on a healing journey and have learned loads about dealing with and avoiding abuse from personality disordered people. I also recognized some bad habits I had put in place as copping mechanisms and work to correct by using healthier methods and setting boundar9es.
I am thankfully able to see red flags and often avoid engaging with narcissists. A certain feeling of appeal is now felt as a warning and time to step back and observe.
If you are around a narc or suffer abuse due to one or more, do know that things can get better.
My progress has me in a better plalalce however I am realizing I might have some things related to cptsd that need worked on. That is why I am here. Hoping to find keywords and self-study topics. I have recently discovered the *** childhood fairy podcasts. I am enjoying them and they serve as a nice review of what I have been learning this past 8to10 years from otherr resouces.
@purpleFig7203 Hey thanks for sharing! I used to frequent that site, and it used to be amazing, but they were very rude to me last time and unsupportive that I left. :( I'm glad you're doing better now. I can relate to what you say.
I grew up with NPD parents, older brothers who were the "golden children" and younger brother who is the "forgotten child" and I was left the scapegoat. Then I got into a relationship with someone who had NPD and his family was just as bad too (ex. Child abuse, alcoholism, domestic violence etc) just... No good.
I have no-contact with any of the above.
My 2nd oldest brother, who I lived with at the time, gave last minute heads-up that he's leaving to live in homestate so I ended up homeless.
A member from out of the fog called me "entitled" for feeling upset about that. So...yeah... That member was a jerk and doesn't know my entire family history. I disregarded that website after and have been on 7cups instead. The only thing that sorta bites, is there's not really an ACoN focus here but...at least there's a lot of people who can relate.
But anyways, I'm better now. I got "adopted" by an amazing family who treats me well with love & respect. I... just feel super happy and now I know what unconditional love looks like. 🩵
@ImpudentIncognito I am just getting out of a narcissistic marriage where I was tortured beyond explanation. Not just the abuse, but he had me arrested several times when I did nothing and tried to take away all parental rights away from me from my toddler.
@BetsiSmith77 I'm sorry you had to go through that. It's messed up that he abused you, had you arrested, and took away parental rights for you to see your toddler. Hope things get better for you. I remember fighting for custody for my son against the child safety department. They took son away after I call the cops on his alcoholic father. The CSD wanted to make sure son was safe and that I wouldn't go back with his father. Took a year to get full custody...
Hopefully you are able to regain half or full custody of your child. Keep fighting on! You got this! 💪
If people have not experienced it, they have a hard time relating and can be less than supportive even when they might be trying to be supportive. Those not well acquainted with narcissistic people and their ways cannot believe it is even possible. They often think we are lying or something.
Funny (to me) story: I had a friend who had a covert narc alcoholic spouse with all the family baggage and OCPD tendencies. We used to do girls night out a couple times a month. Fast forward years. My hubs was on meds and we had reduced stressed in the house but she was separated and hers was full on binging on alcohol to where she did not want some alone with him. She was thinking about the upcoming dating game.
We were joking around and making a hypothetical list of screening questions for hypothetical dating site profile. After two glasses of wine and years of history together we were having a blast. We reread what we had so far a couple of times. A couple of guys at the bar following a men's golf day out were paying attention and one was getting fake angry. He came and sat by us and became very involved with what we were doing and we explained why our silly screening questions has been chosen or the back stories. I later realized he was a narc gathering Intel, and that we potentially set him years ahead in "the game" .
@ImpudentIncognito
I never knew about this but it makes sense. My mom keeps calling me sensitive, and I’m a grown woman. She’s calling me that after I cut her off. I’ve heard her multiple times over the past few months talk really bad about me behind my back to groups of people. The way she talks is so ugly. I couldn’t believe it and everything she was saying was a lie to these groups. I always felt like they were possibly narcissistic until the word sensitive kept popping in my head and I know that is narcissistic tendencies. I don’t even use the word sensitive. I was also told that I want to steal her happiness, but I don’t and I’m told that after I cut her off that I am basically jealous of her life and her happiness calling me unhappy… wow… I would never want to wish unhappy on anyone. I was just saying what didn’t make me happy with the relationship but I got that in response. Everything’s being turned on me as if I’m a bad person and it’s so weird because all of this is coming up simply because I cut her off. I told her that if she really thinks that about me, why would she want to talk to me anyways?
I told her, that’s not good for a person to be like that so why do you keep harassing me to talk to you?
she said she wants to be a mother and I told her that’s done and over with, I told her she’s not a mother to me and she can’t stand that and I don’t tell her that to hurt her. I tell her that because I’m getting treatment for PTSD and I’m noticing that there’s a lot of childhood trauma and I never knew that before and I try to talk to her about it and instead this is what I get
She tries to get me back and she doesn’t treat me good every time I’m around and the people that she surround herself around doesn’t treat me good either, but I have to be very nice to everyone
