EMDR

Hi,

So my therapist knew today's session would be tough for me after being in hospital on Monday.

She brought her buzzer things for emdr and got me used to them slowly, checking I didn't mind the sensory side of them, then she just left me with them and we carried on normally.

I don't get how it works and I'm a bit freaked out about it, probably more because its the unknown. She said next time we can try using it on trauma. And something about memory goals? what are these?

Please can someone just explain in plain english not therapy language 😭

The method is legit. It lowers anxiety associated with traumatic memories. It can help you desensitize those memories. Some people swear by it. Give it a chance.

ooh a fellow turtle 🐢💜

that makes sense. I'll give it a go. I don't feel deserving as the trauma is my fault, and not bad enough

EMDR or Eye movement desensitization and processing is a form of therapy where you use eye movements as you are asked about traumatic experiences and memories to help process them and desensitize the emotional pain that comes with them. There are a lot of studies about the merits of EMDR; I will say that EMDR can be quite tiring and triggering because you have to recount these difficult experiences and think about them, but this recounting is incredibly powerful in the healing process and will make it so the experiences and memories are not as triggering. EMDR generally works for most trauma victims, but sometimes it does not help much; if this is the case, then it's okay. You're not weird or unhelpable, and I'm sure your therapist will try a different method. There are many ways mental health professionals try to and can help trauma victims and PTSD sufferers.

I think you explained that well, and yes all you have said is right. I am one who tried EMDR and got no results from it. However, we all respond differently❤️

I'm sorry to hear that EMDR did not get you the results you desired, yet there are additional therapies and resources that you can try that can help. I know there is a workbook called "The Complex PTSD Workbook" by Dr. Arielle Schwartz, and it has been helpful for me and many other individuals. It may be worth trying out, and if it does not help, there are still other methods out there to try.
