How Well Do You Really Know Them?

I just found out that someone I know has been dealing with a trauma for seven years, yet she seemed completely fine on the outside. I was so surprised, and disappointed in myself because I thought I was very observant, especially towards the people I care about.

Is it normal for people to hide their pain so well? And why do we rarely notice?

It is normal.

Sometimes people don't want to open up.

They don't want people to see them in a different light.

In other cases, people say they will help but the reality can be very different.

Some people like to keep things private 💚

I'm sorry your friend went through this!

Absolutely—it’s very normal. 🌱
Many people become incredibly skilled at carrying pain quietly, especially when they’ve had years to learn how to survive with it.

Trauma doesn’t always look like breaking down. Often it looks like showing up, smiling, functioning, and doing what’s expected—because for some people, hiding their pain was the safest option. Over time, that mask can become second nature.

We rarely notice because we’re taught to equate “okay” with appearances. We see productivity, humor, kindness, or calm and assume someone is fine—without realizing that strength and suffering can exist in the same space. Also, trauma is deeply internal. Unless someone feels safe enough to share, there may be no visible signs at all.

It’s a powerful reminder to lead with gentleness. You truly never know what someone has been carrying for years behind a “fine” exterior. 🤍

Normal indeed. Speaking from personal experience, I do it. I want to cry and I should, I want to scream and let everyone who cares about me that my world is all but pain. So that people can reach a hand back to me. But I am incredibly good at hiding it, and I always do, which brought me to a very bad place, many times. I do it because my parents did not support me through my problems and this is how I coped from the very beginning. I fear exposing myself, I fear that it will all go wrong, because that is all I know. Sometimes I lie and dodge questions because they will reveal my state. And in the end I will feel bad and I will know I let myself down.
You may be observant but sometimes people are too good at hiding it. I would like to let you know that not noticing that is not your fault.
