Name Change Due to Trauma

Has anyone ever changed their name or considered changing their name?

I'm planning on changing my last name to not be associated with my (abusive) family once I move out of this city and severe ties completely with them.

I also want to change my son's last name too, as it is associated with my alcoholic and abusive ex-fiancé, who is son's father. He is also no longer in my son's life, because he does not want to be, unless we're in a relationship again (which will never happen, he nearly made me unalive).

I thought about changing my first name too...It's a diminutive of another name and has religious connotations (I'm not religious at all). I don't like that it means I'm "little [biblical name]".  I feel like it's a bit condescending...In my mother's home country, they get confused about my name and call me by [biblical name].

My name is similar to naming your child  "Lizzy" instead of "Elizabeth" for the English equivalence. So, people will say "Hey Elizabeth" when it's "Lizzy".

Also, my name is not English, and I live in English speaking country. Some people can't pronounce my name...So I go for a shorthand name, like "Liz" for example.

My partner likes my first name and people have complimented it (who are not from my mother's country) saying it's a pretty name, so...I guess I might keep the first name. It's somewhat unique (I guess?...), but only those close to me call me that.

I just don't want to be associated with my past family, where I grew up with physical & verbal abuse along with SA from mother...

If you changed your name, how did you end up deciding on it?

I am mixed race, with ties to Spanish, Portuguese, and French. My son has ties to Eastern Asian and Pacific Islander due to his dad's side. I want to keep our culture in our names. My son's name is an islander first name. His middle and last are clan names that trace back to his dad's islands, but got English-ified when ex's parents immigrated to this country. I'm unsure if I want to completed remove his names, but at the same time, his dad and that side of the family are violent alcoholics...and caused us pain and inflicted pain on son and myself. I don't think I want that reminder with the name. I won't change my son's first name though. Just middle and last, or just last name.

My current partner is Nordic and Eastern Asian...Was thinking when we get married, I may just take his last name as well as have my son take it (partner already stated he doesn't mind this).

Anyways, thanks for reading!

@ImpudentIncognito I have no idea about name changes or how to go about it... But I just wanted to say that I am so happy you and your son got out of that abusive relationship. ♡ Both of your safety matters and should be priority. If you feel a disconnect from your birth name and feel its meaning is condescending, then do what you feel is best for you. You're the one that has to live with the name so it should be one you can happily embrace. Right? :) I hope you are happier now and that your current partner treats you and your son with love and respect and makes you feel valued. ♡

As for your son, you are his parent so you do what is best to protect him. I do believe age plays a factor as changing a name you knew your whole life may bring about other feelings. I know you mentioned you may just change the middle and last name, but would this be something you talk about with him to see his thoughts on it. At the end of the day, the decision is yours. Like I said, safety is everything. ♡ I hope in whatever you decide it is a decision you can be proud of! Take care!

@YourCaringConfidant My partner has been amazing and supportive. He grew up quite similarly to me, but with more physical abuse. My son is still small in daycare and unaware of his middle and his lastname. The easiest change might be just me adding my lastname and not changing his middle and last. In my culture, it is common to have two lastnames.

My ex never wanted the two lastnames and wouldn't allow my input at all in naming son. He has called me racial slurs in the past and said some sexist things as well. Just a lot of bad memories...

But anyways, yeah, lastname is the easiest change, especially after marriage. Though, I would like to create my own maiden name.

I'm doing to wait awhile to decide and think about. I don't want to do so on a whim.

Thanks for your support!✨
