PTSD Awareness Month – Day 13: The Fallout

Some people know me as the author of Through the Little Lens. Others know me by my amateur radio call sign, KG4QWI. Today, both parts of my life intersect.

It’s remarkable how decisions surrounding a holiday that is still weeks away have already reshaped my world. Discussions and disagreements over fireworks—something many see as harmless celebration—have become a constant reminder of a trigger that arrived long before the Fourth of July itself.

The irony is not lost on me. Independence Day has, in many ways, taken away my own independence.

I’ve already begun withdrawing. I’ve already started isolating. My nervous system is already preparing for what it expects is coming, and that anticipation alone has been exhausting.

At the same time, I’m recovering from surgery. Healing takes days, sometimes weeks, and rest is part of that process. But when a friend needed help, I pushed through. I gave what energy I had because serving others is part of who I am.

In hindsight, I may have pushed too hard. I may have depleted myself emotionally and physically. I may have made mistakes or fallen short of expectations—not because I didn’t care, but because I had reached my limits. Unfortunately, those shortcomings can overshadow the gratitude and good intentions behind trying to help in the first place.

That is part of the fallout of PTSD that people rarely see. It isn’t just the memories or the anxiety. It’s the opportunities missed, the events unattended, the friendships placed on hold, the volunteer service interrupted, and the quiet retreat into self-isolation simply to survive.

To anyone walking a similar road: you are not alone. Healing is rarely linear, and sometimes the bravest thing you can do is acknowledge your limits and give yourself permission to recover.

Today, that’s where I am.
