Sexually Assaulted

Hey, Everyone:

I have a hard time sleeping at night, so it's when I do most of my thinking and whatnot.

I'm 22 and am about to start my last semester of college at a small, Lutheran college in the Midwest. A little over a year ago (April 5, 2013 to be exact), a guy I considered a friend sexually assaulted me. He came over to watch Boy Meets World with me, which I figured would be harmless. We had fooled around a little bit the previous semester, but I had told him over Christmas break that I didn't want to fool around anymore. I had different reasons for not wanting to continue.

So, on this particular night, we were just chilling in my apartment watching the TV show. We were watching it online and it was taking awhile for one of the episodes to load. As we were waiting for it to load, he started fingering me and other stuff. I told him no. Numerous times. I told him I didn't want to do that. He didn't listen. He said I could just lay there and enjoy it and that I wouldn't have to do anything. I didn't know what else to do, so I just laid there. Eventually, I helped him finish because it was just going to keep doing stuff to me and take forever if I didn't. I didn't want to, but I felt like I had no other choice.

I was doing a lot better and felt like I was moving on with this. But it's really been bothering me again lately. I should've done more to try to stop him. I'm such an idiot. I know it's not as drastic as what happens to a lot of people, but it's effecting me quite a bit. I feel like it's effecting me more than it should. I just feel so weak and pathetic. I don't really know what to do.

No means no and in your situation you said no so of course it's to be drastic as you explain it. Guys have this thing in their head that a girl wants them and no is easily swayed. I cannot tell you ways to recover from this with sleep and over thinking habits but please understand you did the best in that situation and either didn't want to antogonize or confront it. I hope you find it in time to look past it and if not please talk about it to let out all your emotions of it

I was texting one of my friends about it earlier this week. It was the first time he was hearing about it. He asked if I did just lie there. I said yes. His response was along the lines of I should've tried to do something to stop it. I do agree with him. I know that's what most people don't say, but he was just trying to be helpful.

It's just so hard sometimes. I was at a club with my roommates Friday night and the thing that was going through my mind was, "How many of the guys in here have hurt a girl like I've been hurt?"

Thank you. I feel it'd be easier if my friends understood, but they don't, which I'm glad they don't. It's just super, super hard sometimes. I feel like, now, I'm always tense in public and have an extra wall up.

I'm sorry you've been through that, too. It's so hard.

Hi, I ve been through a similar situation though in this case it was my ex boyfriend. We had recently broken up and he sexually assulted me even though I said no. I too didnt fight back as much as I could have.It still affects me and I understand how easy it is to blame yourself for that but the guy is the jerk here and its not your fault. You have to realise that. You telling him no once was enough and you did so numerous times. And it is drastic, its not a small thing. I am here for you if you ever wanna talk :)

Some guys are such jerks. I'm sorry you've been through that, too. I just feel like since I didn't fight back as much as I could've/should've and helped him finish just so he'd be done sooner, I shouldn't feel like so much of a victim.

I understand that but you need to know that you were a victim and you shouldn't feel like you don't have a right to feel hat way. You did what you thought would get you out of that situation the fastest. Also, maybe the fact that you knew the guy made it tough for you to fight back the way you would ve had it been a stranger. Don't beat yourself up over it

I think the fact that I knew him and did consider him a friend did play a role in how I reacted to the situation. Doesn't really make it any easier, though.

It isvery very normal not to fight back. You did what you could in that moment and blaming yourself for it doesn't change the fact that hedidn't have to assault you. He didn't have to do what he did, which makes him, and onlyhim to blame.

I guess. I just shouldn't have let myself be alone with him.

Being alone with a guy should not be an "unsafe" situation. You put yourself in a normal situation and a violent predator took advantage.

Her hon, I really encourage you to tell the police. But if you're not ready to make that move I do encourage you to talk to a therapist or even others on here. I have just been sexually assaulted as well and I know it wouldn't be healthy to keep it in, so please talk about it. I'm here to talk whenever you need to.

And Don't you dare feel pathetic! It wasn't your fault and he had no right to touch you.

I told the school right after it happened. And it's not like he physically hurt me so there's no point in telling the police. I talk about it with some people. Others just don't get it, which is good. I just hate how much I feel like a victim.

He may not have physically hurt you, this might be true, but actions like this is not permitted and it is not ok. I am not saying you should or shouldn't go to the police, but I am letting you know that this case is definitely something they could look into for you if you felt comfortable reporting it and it is no less damaging. Just because you aren't physically hurt, you have been hurt emotionally and that can be just as painful to cope with which is why we are here for you to support you through these difficult time.

I know others have already said this, but I want you to feel happy, we all care about you here and we are here to help you overcome this. You cannot compare yourself to others, or worse scenarios because every person suffers differently and we are here for YOU. YOU matter to us and you have every right to be feeling the way you do. You can't blame yourself, not stopping it is a very common and normal reaction in situations like that. By saying "no" and him not stopping, he is the only one to blame here so please don't blame yourself.

Concerning the part about you being weak and pathetic, continuing to carry on as well as you have done and posting here seeking guidance and help is a massive step that just shows how strong you are by facing it. As for pathetic, that isn't even in the question!! ;) You have been immensely brave and strong and emotions can be difficult and uncontrollable at times.

Can you think of anything that might help you overcome this?

Thanks, Hannah. I do know deep down that it wasn't my fault. It's just really hard to not blame myself sometimes.

Nothing's really helped so far, so I really don't know what would help overcome this.

Have you ever tried analyzing this from his perspective or even talking about it with him? I think that it would be really beneficial to you.

When I read you story (I've read every post here up til now) I had a lot of mixed feelings. I definitely understand your pain and feel sympathy towards your situation and resulting confusion. Your story isn't uncommon and if you are having emotional repercussions that is not to be taken lightly.

However, I feel empathetic towards him as well. I doubt that his actions were malicious, that he meant to assault you, or that he even comprehends how his actions could be seen that way. Our society doesn't give us a manual on what sex is and how to have it properly, we have to learn for ourselves. And the media bombards us with ill-conceived notions about sex constantly.

If I had to guess what his thoughts were/are I would say that he probablythought that he was doing something sexy for you. There are a lot of angles to explore here so be patient with me. Starting at the very beginning, you two alone together with an awkward pause created by the lack of stimuli from the malfunctioning tv. I'm guessing that because your relationship had been sexual previously at this point he doesn't have a clue how to interact with you in a platonic setting so given the lack of distraction he felt under the spotlight and freaked a little. So he reverted to what he understood, sex. At this point he advances and you say no. He responds by assuring you that he doesn't expect sexual favors in return. This is a big clue as to how he thinks and it makes complete sense based on what the media tells us! A.) He thinks you only don't want pleasure because you don't want to pleasure him. B.) He wants to pleasure you meaning he has no intentions of "taking" from you or hurting you. C.) He has no concept whatsoever that touching you under the assumptions of A. and B. could still hurt you emotionally/psychologically and could be considered molestation/assault. He obviously thought that if you were receiving pleasure and had no obligation to him then he was not doing wrong.

Of course, this isn't true.

But men make this mistake because men and women don't talk about these issues. Heck, even women don't talk about these issues. And when they do, you end up hearing a lot of extreme responses saying either A.) You are over reacting because he did nothing wrong, or B.) He's a horrible person, lock him up forever. I can't help but think that both of these responses are equally wrong and damaging to both parties.

I think that you should talk to him. Somewhere public, but where you can have privacy to discuss these delicate issues. Explain to him in a non-threatening way how you felt that night and how it has affected you. Encourage him to explain himself and share his feelings. You might be able to accomplish two very beautiful things, if not three. You might be able to come to understand his actions in a way that you didn't before so that you can forgive him and move on from this trauma. Also, you could potentially enlighten him to a new understanding what is appropriate sexually so that he will not make this mistake again. Lastly, you may even be able to restore your friendship!

Now, of course, this is all based on two assumptions. A.) That when you said "no" you weren't doing it so forcefully or authoritativelythat it was clear beyond a doubt that you meant it in all capacities. (By that, I mean to imply the old saying, "It's not what you say, it's how you say it." Again, I'm not saying that you did anything wrong! Our society does not teach women how to be authoritative, especially towards men, and definitely doesn't teach us how to say no!) And B.) That he meant you no harm and would would be mortified to learn that he had hurt you. If you talk to him and find that he doesn't care at all if he hurt you and would do it again then I suggest that you forget everything I've said and go straight to the police. (For this reason I suggest you voice record the interaction so that you will have undeniable proof of his guilt since there is a chance, a very high chance, they will say you gave your consent when you helped him to make you climax.)

I really hope this helped and that everything works out for you! Best of wishes!

I appreciate your honesty and different outlook on this than what other people have said. I actually did talk to him about it, alone in my apartment, before I went to the school with his name. I wanted him to know how I felt. How scared it made me feel. We were sitting on opposite ends of the couch and I remember just shaking because I was alone with him. I told him how I felt. He blamed it on my depression, which played no role in it. He did not feel bad at all.

I am so sorry for your sufferings.... But self respect is above all.... and a no should be a no.... Just remember you have your own individuality... and its your life... no one should command it... I know its difficult but telling your elders for sure will bring you out from this... Hope you come out of this soon... dont worry...
