Special event: Hope made simple (Day 2)
Hey community
Welcome to day 2 of our special event on hope. Feel free to check out day 1 here. You can share any thoughts that popped up while reading through this, answer one or two of the questions posted, or just sit with it for a moment ❤️
It’s easy to tell a person to choose hope when they’re already feeling pretty good. What do we do if we’re having a bad day? To answer that question, let’s find out more about what exactly causes you to have all of these negative feelings
Different parts of your brain are responsible for different things. There’s a part of your brain that deals with logical reasoning, decision-making, learning, and other more complex tasks; let’s call this part the upstairs brain. Another part of your brain handles your emotions; let’s call this the downstairs brain
Because your emotions are hardwired to protect you from danger, your upstairs brain shuts down when your downstairs brain senses too much danger and takes over. This means that when you’re feeling really sad, angry, anxious, or afraid, it becomes more difficult to think rationally and make good decisions. The first helpful thing you can do here is to help your downstairs brain calm down
Here’s a list of things you can try:
1. Deep breathing - you can google for a breathing GIF, count to 5, or clench and unclench your fist to help you focus on breathing
2. Journaling - writing down your thoughts and emotions can help you to get them out and
3. Visualisation - there are many ways to do this, I’ll tell you about two common ones you can try:
a. imagine yourself in a place where you feel safe or happy, and hold try to recreate the space as vividly as possible
b. visualise how you’re feeling right now as vividly as you can. Think about the colour and shape, or give it a name if you’d like. When you’re done, change one thing about it, such as by changing the colour or the shape or its size
5. Grounding exercises - the 54321 method is particularly popular: identify 5 things you can see, 4 things you can touch, 3 things you can hear, 2 things you can smell, and 1 thing you can taste
6. Gratitude - focus on one good thing that happened in the past week, and try to recreate it in your mind
Today, if you feel your downstairs brain starting to become distressed, try a few of these techniques and see if it helps ❤️ If it does, you can try practicing hope and see if it’s a little easier
Questions:
1. If you practiced hope yesterday, how did it go?
2. What are some things that usually help your downstairs brain to calm down

@hopebeyondpain Hi. You're right. I forget or talk myself out of my hope skills on the bad days. I've been trying to find tricks to remind myself of the mindset I have on the good days, where I can feel so confident and positive that things will be ok. I've been good the last few days, and hope has been around. I still have a lot of times when I get so overwhelmed and things snowball. I don't know how good I've been at using the techniques, but it feels like an accomplishment to recognize that I'm snowballing. I tell myself over and over that I'm doing it. I don't necessarily feel calmer, but I stay more present? Until I eventually distract myself with something else. Yesterday I told myself that's good enough for now.
@shellofashell
Hey there ❤️ I'm really happy to hear you've been having good days lately
You're aboslutely right that it's a big accomplishment. It's so easy to discredit your achievements when you stumble and feel like you're back at square one, but every little bit of effort that you've put in counts. Nothing you do is ever wasted ❤️ I'm proud of you for recognising that and working to find better ways to help yourself on the bad days
The steps you take don't have to be big, as long as they take you in the right direction ❤️ You're doing amazing - keep going!

Aww. You're so special 💕
Sorry I'm very new to this group so please bear with me. I understand the concept of hope and reading your post has really made me think about the things I should be focusing on when my downstairs brain feels overwhelmed. Interestingly I've done lots of the visualisation work in hypnotherapy and it was really useful. Also I have a beach that I should be able to visualise myself out, so I need to work on that. Thank you so much for your insight
@Bluebrummie
Hey there ❤️ Welcome to our community ❤️
No need to feel sorry for anything, I'm just glad to hear that the post helped ❤️ Wow, it sounds like you had a really good experience with hypnotherapy, that's good to hear. Have fun at your beach! Take care ❤️
@hopebeyondpain Thanks for your kind words. Yes the hypnotherapy was amazing. Really helped sort out a lot of issues and help me face and understand my traumas and supressed memories. I have a lot to be grateful for ❤
Hi @hopebeyondpain , thank you for day # 2 of this great, continuing post,
1. If you practiced hope yesterday, how did it go? I am sorry, I just can not remember yesterday one bit right now. Somethings happened today and I just can't now.
2. What are some things that usually help your downstairs brain to calm down? deep breathing, journaling, and visulation---from what you mentioned above.
Hey @hopebeyondpain
How are you doing?
I loved this post a whole lot.
I even copied and pasted it into a Word.doc for me/us to always keep!!!!!! You put a whole lot of great information in this post that we all can use anytime we need and can remember and learn to do use it.
Thanks for all you do.
I'm sorry I forgot to let you know this in my post/reply right above. My brain is doing it's best it can for now. Please forgive me and all my alters. You are a nice person. Thanks so much!
@Amelia2324
Hey there ❤️ I'm doing good, thank you for asking! I hope you're doing well too ❤️
Aww, I'm so glad you found it helpful! I adapted the content from our hope training guide, you can read that if you're interested ❤️ You can also tell me in a forum post here if there are any topics in particular you want to know more about!
No need to apologise, I know your brain is trying really hard ❤️ You seem like an awesome person too! Take care, and I hope you'll have a good day ahead ❤️

@hopebeyondpain, Hi!
1. To be honest, I don't really want to remind myself about hope. A part of myself thinks that my goals won't happen if I am being hopeful. However, validations from other people help me a lot. Having self-doubt sucks. Lol.
2. Video games keep my brain calm. It helps me forget my struggles. Too bad it leads to addiction. Apart from that method, deep breathing is indeed a good technique. I think meditating can help me a lot. Unfortunately, I'm afraid that my parents will make fun of me if I do that activity. Or if someone at home suddenly disturbs my alone time. Thanks for reading. Hahaha.
Until next time,
Ham
@SnippyHam
Hey Ham ❤️
I know that feeling - it almost feels as though you're setting yourself up to be disappointed
Personally, I usually find it helpful to focus on what I can do instead of what I'm hoping to accomplish. For example: Instead of hoping that I'll do well in my test, I'll hope that the practice questions I'm planning to do can help me do better on my test. Instead of hoping that my anxiety will get better, I'll hope that the new technique I'm trying will help me feel better, or that the new morning routine I've set up for myself will help me feel less anxious throughout the day. Instead of hoping that the pandemic will get better soon, I'll hope that the $10 I donated to the UN foundation for covid relief in India will contribute to a better relief response
The goal of hope is not to comfort you when things are going terribly, it's to point you to the things that are still good and worth fighting for even though everything else is bad. Hope can point us to the ways we can move forward, and motivate us to try again. Whether or not we choose hope, life is the way it is. But hope can help us rebuild our lives, step by step
Thanks for being here ❤️ It's always nice to hear from you. Take care, and I hope (haha) you'll have a good day ahead ❤️
Thanks for sharing that method. :) So, that's how hope works. Ohh.
have no more hope in me left
@Amelia2324
Hey Amelia ❤️
I just wanted to say that it's okay if this just feels like an impossible thing to do right now. I sounds like you're been having a really difficult time lately, and it's perfectly normal to just not have the energy to try something like hope. It's okay to not be okay. In fact, I'm proud of you for being honest with us about how you really feel about hope
Here's the link to a post I once wrote about this. Thank you for joining us today, and please take care ❤️

@convivialTiger9327
Hey there ❤️ Welcome to our community!
Yes, it really is difficult to keep hoping on the days where things just feel particularly awful. I want you to know that I'm proud of you for putting in the effort to change that, and that none of the work you put in is ever wasted. There may be ups and downs along the way, but that's a normal part of the process, and we're all here to walk through it together. So keep up the good work! Thank you for joining us, and take care ❤️
