Coping with Suicide
I recently lost my 20 y.o. son to suicide. I am beyond devastated. I'm a single mom, work all day, and try to be present for my 15 y.o. daughter. I sleep so poorly, cry when triggered, and wrap myself in his baby blanket every night. Honestly I don't know what I need to get through this, beyond prayers. I just don't care anymore because I can't live with my heart so shattered.
I’m so sorry. You should see if you can find a listener to talk to who is knowledgeable about grief.
i am so so sorry. I am thinking about you.
Hello @SeqnMom,
First, I want to tell you how sorry I am for your loss. My nephew committed suicide about 7 years ago. His mom (my sister) and our whole entire family was devastated. I’ll never forget the phone call from my sister. Like you, my sister had other children. We did everything we could to wrap around her with as much love and emotional support as we could. The suicide was out of the blue, days before he was to graduate from high school—nothing made sense to us.
In time, the pain will slightly start to ease but it will take a lot of time. The grieving process has its own timeline. There are support groups for families that have lost loved ones to suicide. I think you should look into that kind of support. If possible, counseling may be helpful for you and your daughter too. Remember, you are not alone. We’re here for you as I am sure there are many others in your life. As you mentioned in your post, you have a 15-year old daughter that needs you. It will not be easy, and I will be praying the strength of the Lord over you and your family, but you do need to be there for her. You also need to think about your own self care, which can be so hard for mothers any way.
Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us as often as you need. We are here for you! You are not alone! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Im so sorry for your loss. I too lost someone to suicide. Lean on the people in your life who are also suffering from this loss. You arent alone. your daughter just lost her brother. Im not sure how close they were but im sure she too is feeling a bunch of emotions. Go easy on yourself. Show your daughter the healthy way to cope with grief. talk about it to each other, dont be afraid to cry. See a family counselar together is you can.
But most inportanly don't fall so into yourself and your own grief that you emotionally abondon your daughter. She needs her mom just as much as you need her. She lost her brother, dont make her lose her mom too.
I wish I could say something that helps. I lost my own 30 year old son a couple years ago. He shot himself with my handgun. He was all I had. I have no other children. He was my best friend, in many ways my teacher, my protector. I don't know why he did it, I don't know what happened in his mind. He didn't tell me he was having difficulty. His fiancé doesn't know why. They lived with me and I am beyond shattered. I will never be who I was. I don't know who I am now. I'm glad for you that you have a daughter who needs you and you need her. I have no other children. I have too much trouble with this. He was given Aimovig for migraines and when he went off it he had problems that would suddenly happen, he threw up for 8 months, the neurologist called me a liar when I told her he was having so many problems every single night. I filed a complaint against her but so far nothing has been told to me about any sort of penalty for her. I feel that his neurologist and his dentist who broke his bone to his eye socket and refused pain control have a lot to do with his giving up, but I will never understand how he could leave me like this. I am destroyed. My heart is shattered I don't know who I would have been but I know I'm not ever going to be that person. I was happy, now I don't know what happy is. Im so sorry for you, I know how painful this is, I wish could help you, I can't even help myself. Im lost, im lonely, im anxious all the time, I have panic attacks. I have a psychiatrist who is trying to help me but I just can't get any relief from the grief. I truly hope you can since you have another child who needs you too. I can't say I'll pray, I don't believe in God anymore, no loving God would allow this to happen to anyone. I'm sorry, you don't need this on top of your grief. NightWitch.
I am so sorry! Words can't convey how sorry I am. I have spent most of my life trying to take myself out, due to extreme child abuse. I couldn't wrap my brain around what it would do to the people who do love me. But, overall, not wanting to hurt those people is ultimately what made me stick this life out a bit longer. I have a friend from college whose son also committed suicide in his early 20's. I pray it's encouraging to you that she is doing well, and has managed to make a good life for herself. This is the worst kind of pain a person can imagine, but it's possible to make it through. Wishing you the best! I hope you find some sort of grief support group.
