Hello everyone, and welcome to part 4 of our 7-part 7 Cups Values Series!

This week we're focusing on our fourth core value: Accountability. For us, that means owning our actions, speaking up when it matters, and holding each other to a high standard. But what does that actually mean when we're on Cups? It’s a lot more than just doing what you say you will - it’s really the foundation of how we keep this community safe and supportive. Here’s what accountability looks like for us in practice:

  • Showing up for each other: Whether you’re committing to a Listener shift, helping out in a room, or just being there for a peer, people are counting on you. Accountability means following through on those commitments.
  • Keeping our space safe: This is a big one. It means stepping up if you see something that goes against our guidelines. Flagging trolls, reporting inappropriate behavior, or just helping guide a chat back to a safe place is how we actively protect this platform.
  • Owning our impact: Sometimes we mess up. Maybe we accidentally give advice when someone just needed a space to vent. Accountability is realizing how our words land, owning those mistakes, and using them to become better listeners!
  • Knowing your own limits: You can't pour from an empty cup. Being accountable also means taking care of yourself. That means setting boundaries, going offline when you're overwhelmed, and not pushing yourself to the point of burnout.

How do you practice accountability within the 7 Cups community?

💙 Share a time when you had to set a healthy boundary for yourself to prevent burnout, or tell us how you ensure you're showing up consistently for the peers who rely on you.

🥅 Community challenge! Share a small goal for how you want to be more accountable on the platform this week!

@Heather225

I used to take up many members st once without even putting a time at starters and it really burned me out. I stopped it. Now I take one member and I put around 20 minutes time.

Something I can try and do is to not forget about the fact that we dont share advice. Its really hard but I m trying towards it

Is this for me holding myself accountable or me holding others accountable for their negative behavior or interactions towards me? I don’t mean the driver who cut me off and forgot their car came with turn signals/blinkers. I’m talking about the person who says they “love” me and does something really, really moronic that it causes hurt and mistrust. Yes, I try to hold them accountable for their behavior and even outline what they need to do to start if they want to start earning my trust back. For my own mental well being, if someone wouldn’t be accountable for their own behavior I’m looking for the exit.

As for holding myself accountable, I do need some external influence from time to time; depending on what it is I need clear expectations to help me to be accountable.

Accountability to me is a delicate balance forged in the fires of experience. It's a unique and individual thing. At times it may be very uncomfortable. At times it may hold you back, and at times it might be just the catalyst you needed to begin to grow. It can be hard to separate from shame, from guilt, esp if the actions needed to remedy the situation are impossible or improbable, or just too hard at the moment. To me, accountability means speaking to your own heart and body, within their limits, and asking yourself what the best, 'most correct,' (not perfect,) realistic thing is in the moment that you can move towards doing. I like this question. Peace 2 all cups.

Take care of yourself deeply <3--

Great subject!

How do I practice accountability within the 7 Cups community?

By not taking more than two requests at the same time and communicating about the time I have for the chat in advance and keeping myself to it.

@Heather225 Since starting my internship with 7 Cups, I have come to learn a lot about myself and how I support others. For me, accountability has been catching myself when I tend to give advice or become too friendly, crossing the line between friendship and support. It has been a journey. I am practising being honest when I make a mistake, or when I recognise where my actions could have been better. I own up when I unfairly misled or allowed something that did in fact, cross a boundary. I am learning to support others with a lot more self-awareness as I go, knowing my own boundaries and limits, and being clearer and more upfront while being caring and sincere. I am also learning to take on less chats in a day, so I don't burn out. I want to give my best to those who come on here, being present and able to give from a nourished place. I am learning to schedule chats instead of pushing myself to stay on longer if someone messages me directly when I am online.

For too long have I placed everything besides my own health at the top of my priority list... the physical problem I am now facing, is my own fault, no one else's. I take full accountability for it... my goal is to start treating myself like the human being, the person in need of love and care, just as much as anyone else does...
