After therapy assessment, help?
This is my second post, but I'm still getting to grips with both this app and therapy, so I hope it's okay to post here ?
I had a talk with a therapist yesterday, it was just a call to determine what kind of help I might need and, I'm realising a lot after that talk. Stuff I'm worried about.
I took the day off work, because I feel physically drained. I'm so tired. How is it that doing nothing leaves you feeling like you can sleep forever?
I'm worried about what the therapist might say when she calls back on Friday? I talked about some pretty dark stuff, what can they do? I'm worried that she'll contact my mom.
Has anyone had therapy before or an assessment like that before? How did it go? What was the outcome???
I'm 27, living in the UK, if that helps at all.
I hope everyone who reads this is having a good day, morning, afternoon, or evening. 💞
@Gege18997 Hi! First of all, I'm so proud of you for seeking therapy. I have never been in your position as a client, and I'm in the US, not the UK, but I am a counseling intern (in grad school to become a counselor) in the US. As a clinician in the US, if I was seeing an adult over 18, I legally and ethically can never ever say ANYTHING to parents, or even significant others or friends or anyone outside of the therapy relationship. If the client discloses that they are a risk to self or others (immediate suicide or homicide risk) I am legally obligated to pursue hospitalization or call the police for cases of homicidal ideation with a plan as part of my duty to warn, and if the client discloses current abuse to a minor, I am required to notify child protective services. Other than that, anything the client tells me remains confidential. And if I break confidentiality, I could lose my license (once I get licensed--I'm not licensed yet as I'm still in training).
As far as "dark" stuff, trust me, your therapist can handle it. We are trained to handle it. It might bring up feelings in us, yes, but any good therapist will process those feelings outside of the therapy relationship so that they can show up completely for you inside the therapy relationship. And, if the therapist can't handle your case for whatever reason, we are trained to refer the case out to a therapist who can.
I know it's scary right now, as all new things are, but you took the first step toward a better future for yourself. Feel free to reach out to me again if you have any more questions about the therapy process! I hope this helps.

I believe there is nothing wrong with starting your therapy and, at the same time, visiting 7 Cups as your daily dose of self-care. And I hope your therapist would not mind it at all.
The assessment, just as you said, is about finding the best ways to help you. I believe it's NOT about judging you, "diagnosing" you (especially after just a single conversation) or sticking any labels.
As for being physically drained by job, recently I have known it very well myself. You deserve rest. You deserve a day off (I guess I should do that very soon, too 😉). And it's OK even to sleep the whole day when your body needs it 😊
