Where is the fine line between standing up for yourself and letting something go, especially if it's a close loved one you are arguing with or an in-law?

@Amanda84 I’m still learning that line. I’m trying to ask myself questions before I respond to someone hurting me.

First, I have to evaluate what kind of person they seem to be. Is the relationship relatively give and take? Do they seem to care about me with their words and actions? Do they have a history of hurting me a lot and not changing? All this will affect what strategy I choose.

If it is a good relationship: Is what I’m going to say helpful to fixing the situation, or am I just venting feelings to feel better? I don’t want unnecessary stress.

Am I trying to say it as kindly as possible? If I find myself trying to jab back at them, or even unintentionally saying something offensive, their defenses will probably go up and their ears will close even if I have something really important to say. I don’t want to hurt them, I just want to solve the problem.

Have they shown a history of caring about me, or do they seem to not be able to look beyond themselves? If they do not listen to understand, or if the relationship seems abusive, I don’t want to waste my breath. I may want to reevaluate this relationship entirely with boundaries or less/no contact.

I’m experiencing this kind of conflict with my kids’ step-mom. Their dad and I were both Catholic but our marriage was annulled, I won’t get into all that here. I reached a good coparenting relationship with him over the years. When he got remarried (they are not married in a church), they experienced some issues blending together different Christian faiths. Eventually, she decided that she would not attend Catholic Mass with him and the kids. For a while, he took them to Mass, and then they went to her church together as a family after. I thought that was a good solution. But there have been ongoing fights in their house any time the kids would share something that was specifically “Catholic”. My kids told me they felt in the middle of a war. Eventually, I think to make things easier, their dad started changing his views (he’ll become a chameleon with people when there’s conflict) and telling the kids to stop believing in the Catholic faith. He stopped taking them to Mass on his weekends and now only attends the other church. I decided to stay out of that and just take them on my time, because I don’t want to try to control their home. However I did ask him to focus on positives that we all agree on as Christians and not cross the line to purposely dismantle their Catholic faith. We agreed to raise them Catholic, and I feel he should honor that. Not long after, I received a message from him that he will not bring them to the Catholic summer camp they’ve been attending this year. Unfortunately it falls during his time, and I have to be out of town. I finally spoke up and expressed my disappointment. He went through many excuses, that he doesn’t like what’s being taught, even though it’s the same they’ve always learned (which he still somehow allows) and he used to believe, that he can’t take them because of his work schedule. Ultimately, he said even if he agreed, and even though his wife is available, she refuses to take them to anything Catholic. There’s nothing she’d have to attend, just drop off and pick up, but she will not support our preexisting agreements. I’ve been brokenhearted about this situation. I told him this, because I know he’ll listen even if she ultimately controls him, and the conversation was fine, but it did not result in changing anything. At least I know he knows how I feel, and I hope it might account for something later. A few days later I got a scathing message from his wife, telling me all that she thinks is wrong with the Catholic faith, that she will not support my children in their faith, that she feels God entrusted her with my children during their time to do what she feels is morally right. She ended it with telling me Catholics are not real Christians and I’m not going to heaven. Thankfully when their dad found this out, he told her it was wrong on my behalf. I never received an apology though. I don’t know that I need one, I have discerned that she is someone I don’t need to be close to. I just worry for my children.

Long story short, I drafted up a reply to her, but ultimately decided it was better not to reply at all. (It still felt nice to write the letter and delete it.) I prayed and concluded that her mind is too closed to really hear me. She and I have talked in the past about faith and I thought they were good conversations, but I could tell she was not really open to hearing my side. I don’t want this to come across the wrong way, but I was reminded of Jesus’s words about not giving pearls to swine. I might think I have something beautiful to share, but again if their ears aren’t open, they won’t truly receive it. As it stands now, she and I are not on speaking terms. She blocked me after telling me off. Sadly, one of my children had a medical emergency last week while in their care, and she wouldn’t even unblock me for that. Their dad didn’t even know. I was going to try to be the bigger person and thank her for her help, and that’s how I found out she blocked me. I guess since then he talked with her about how that’s inappropriate and we need open contact for emergencies. So he told me she unblocked me, only for emergencies. I am dumbfounded how she is justifying all this in her mind. I still feel it was the best option to not respond to her. But unfortunately I am still very concerned about what all this means for my children going forward. Thankfully they are older now and I’m hoping they already have a strong enough foundation and support from me to not tear them away from their faith.

Sometimes, the question ultimately comes down to putting it in God’s hands and trusting that you’ve done everything you can do.

I’m sorry this got so long. It’s weighing on me.

@PiecesOfWhoeverIWas don't apologise at all, I'm glad you opened up to me and got it off your chest , I'm happy to listen and I can see great wisdom in what you are saying, especially about not reacting or jabbing back just for the sake of it, otherwise it will only fall on closed ears. I guess it's about not being reactive in the moment, letting the emotions die down and not become heated, getting your point across without shouting, being heard but also listening and deciding when silence might be better. My brother's girlfriend recently was very rude about him at a family gathering and no one said anything because they didn't want to ruin the occasion or be offside with my two nephews. But then she continued and everyone stayed silent but I addressed her rudeness and stood up for my brother and now I'm in everyone's bad books but I don't feel like the apology needs to come from me !

@Amanda84 Thank you for your kindness. ❤️

That is a tough situation you are in too. I don’t like listening to someone putting someone else down behind their back in public like that. And for it to be your family. You all gave her a chance to think twice about the choice she was making. When she kept going, she had to have had a moment where she paused and wondered if she should keep going, and she must have known there would be a chance she’d push too far. I’m sorry it didn’t have a better ending. People can be willing to put up with a lot to avoid confrontation.

@Amanda84 I don't believe there is a line. If you feel upset/angry/attacked remove yourself from the picture before reacting. Then when your calmer you can decide whether to leave it or wether to calmly talk to that person 💖 wow! I should learn to take my own advice sometimes😁

is this a hypothetical question?? (I used a big word🤓) if it's not hypothetical are you ok?? I always got your back💖

@Tinywhisper11 i guess this also inevitably highlights the importance of boundaries, like, I recently let someone disrespect me, and yet continued to be a good friend to them, they made no effort, I did all the legwork, they ghosted me, appeared back, I forgave them, only for the same cycle to happen all over again, so now I blocked them and I feel at peace 🥰

@Amanda84 if it really matters which believe it or not is hard to identify like all my life my family has been very straightforward with everything especially my siblings and I do love them but they can say things which I wont like but I unless its something that means something to me I let it go, so they tell me I am too in my shell and pampered i d let it go and not care and they d be a hundred more examples but if they start saying something i dont like i d advise them to not say that but in most cases try to first let it go because most things are not worth it but if people genuinely treat you bad then dont let them, always go for peace but understand that sometimes you have to fight that battle depending on your own feelings.

@Amanda84

I believe each person has to converse with themselves and decide together where the fine line is between standing up for yourself and letting something go.

I try letting something go first by not responding to what’s going on or walking away from it if it’s something like an argument. Sometimes it’s better to just leave instead of continually arguing back n forth bc eventually that can make everyone in the argument including yourself reach your breaking point which everyone also has and explode/blow up in anger.

However it’s also sometimes good and important to stand up for yourself. So when that’s happening, try your best to keep calm, sensible, logical, rational, reasonable, respectful, etc and if at some point you sense yourself getting away from that, then I’d suggest it’s time to end the conversation at least for now by saying something like “this is pointless and not getting any of us anywhere. let’s take a break from this for now and continue later if any of us want to” and walking away.

I’m here for you if you ever want or need to talk or let anything out just for the healthiness of getting it out. Journaling helps getting things out too.

Endless hugs to you ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

@akunknown not reacting out of emotions is a great insight, and I agree, it would be pointless, thank you for taking the time to share and yes, journaling is vital 💜🥰
