What keeps a man alive?

Is it the urge to live or fear of death?

Perhaps the truth lies not in either alone, but in the tension between them. They are two sides of the same coin. Life is the delicate balance between both — the yearning to cherish and the resistance to perish.

The urge to live may burn bright in youth. But as time passes, the world grows quieter. And in the stillness, the fear of death begins. Maybe it is that fear that stirs us again to want to breathe.

So perhaps we are kept alive by a pendulum swinging between life’s invitation and death’s reminder.

But what of those who possess neither — who neither want to live or fear death, 

What keeps them alive?
