Hey folks, just wanted to share some info on what high-functioning depression might look like since it’s often misunderstood.

High-functioning depression (sometimes called persistent depressive disorder or dysthymia) is when someone seems to be doing okay on the outside - working, socializing, keeping up with responsibilities - but inside they’re struggling with ongoing low mood and other depressive symptoms.

Some signs to watch for include:

  • Feeling down or hopeless most days, even if you can still "push through" and get things done

  • Constant fatigue or low energy, despite appearing fine to others

  • Trouble sleeping or changes in appetite

  • Low self-esteem and harsh self-criticism

  • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions

  • Feeling like you’re “faking it” or don’t deserve happiness

  • Going to social events but feeling like you’re forcing yourself

  • Sometimes crying or feeling emotional for no clear reason

  • Using substances like alcohol to cope

Because symptoms are less severe than major depression, people with high-functioning depression often fly under the radar, and their struggles can be mistaken for just being gloomy or lazy. It’s a chronic condition that can seriously impact quality of life, so recognizing it and seeking help is key.

If this sounds familiar, talking to a mental health professional can make a big difference. You’re definitely not alone in this. Take care!
