my last straw
my brother has a history of throwing away his food. sounds simple or something thats not too deep, right? well no.
it all started in april. i'd give him breakfast and a few snacks in bed. you see, he's a very slow eater. and i when i say slow, i mean VERY SLOW; it takes him 2 hours on 1 simple bread/sandwich. and no, it's not a mental problem or whatever; he could down that same sandwich within 30 minutes in another random day.
so yeah i became sick of waiting for him to finish his meals in the bedroom, so i started giving him a time limit — about 2-3 hours before going downstairs. he would then go down minutes before the given time limit, giving me a thumbs up each time and tellinf me he's done. guess what? all of that was a lie.
A MONTH STRAIGHT he's been lying straight to my face. in the middle of may, i found it. i found a whole stash of food thrown away under our bed. it took about 5 trash bags to really empty everything — all weighing 8kg+. gosh. if only someone else saw my breakdown that time. but whatever, i gave him another chance, as long as he never threw away his food again.
then, his school year started. of course i still had doubts. i kept on reminding and warning him to not throw away his food; it's better to have come home with the food i packed him rather than throwing it away. so after 3 weeks, i decided to ask him what were inside his sandwich (ham, egg, cheese, mayo). ham, cheese, and some "white sauce", he replied. i asked him whether he even tasted a hint of eggs or what. after a few minutes, he finally did admit that he threw away the eggs. actually, i found it reasonable as he excused that it tasted different. i didn't even get mad at him: instead, i even thanked him for telling me the truth.
still, i was not at ease; i created a contract with him the following morning. it consisted of our promises to each other and some rules. basically, the main point written was that there'd be NO problem, as in ZERO punishment, yelling, whatsover if he threw away his food AS LONG AS he tells me the truth. he even promised me in the contract that he'll never throw away his food.
well guess what. fast forward to today. classes were suspended. any way, i left him his dinner: pork and tofu. i even saw him take a bite of the tofu. asked him, how was the tofu? he had the nerve to reply it tasted good. so i left the house and went back home after 2 hours. of course i was in doubt.
so i checked the trash bag. and there it was. tofu and some bits of rice and pork. what even was more maddening was that he had the nerve to try and hid ethe tofu inside an empty bag of chips. so i gave him a chance. did you finish your tofu? yes. you didn't throw away your food? no. i was damn sick of being lied to STRAIGHT TO MY FACE. i confronted his ***. i gave him a chance to confess everything cause i knew damn well that wasn't the only thing he's thrown away.
it was everything all at once. he mentioned about 10 sandwiches that he's thrown away even after the contract. and what *** me off more was a damn plain peanut butter sandwich. he liked pb sandwiches.
i talked to this about my parents and they just told me that he's a growing child and i should just LET??HIM??BE?? gosh i even contacted a local organisation and the guidance office from my past school. no help given 🤷♀️
idk what to do at this point. he's just wasting his food and all. "ask him what he wants" thats the thing. i've been packing him everything he wants and everything ended up in the trash. i can't not pack him food, he wouldn't eat at all. his brain just revolves around YouTube and all.
please i need your help. this has been giving me a huge chunk of stress.
Hey @decisiveSpruce7079, thank you for sharing all of this. It sounds like you've been dealing with an incredibly stressful situation for a long time, and I'm sorry you are going through this.
The way you described everything (the waiting, the checking, the lies, the food hidden under the bed, the contract you made together) shows how much effort and care you've been putting in, and how exhausting it has been for you.
I can hear how alone you've felt in trying to manage this. You've been packing him the food he likes, reminding him, giving him changes, even creating a contract to make things feel safer and clearer, and you are still finding the food thrown away. It can be draining, especially when you're trying your absolute best.
I can hear how hurt you were when you found everything under the bed, and again when you checked the trash. It makes sense that you'd feel frustrated that your parents brushed it off, and it seems like you were hoping that someone would take this seriously with you.
It's clear how much you care about your brother, and how much pressure this has put on you. You're trying to help him, protect him, and make sure he eat. That's a lot for one person to carry.
If you feel comfortable, what part of all of this feels most overwhelming for you right now?

Thank you so much!! I truly appreciate your response; it means a lot to me since I'm trying to handle all these by myself 🥹 Honestly, another problem.. he's been spending a lot of time on simple meals such as a sandwich. It took him 5 hours to complete it. That's pretty overwhelming for me. He's been at it since yesterday — all meals have been ongoing for more than 3 hours. What really frustrated me was during dinner earlier; he spent 3 hours on it, just for his plate to be half eaten, and then he throws up everything. He isn't even physically sick or anything and that was his favourite dish ☹️
I hear and support your frustration and I would feel similar in that situation. To add to that, food is not cheap these days by any stretch of the imagination. Thank you for feeling safe enough with us to share your feelings and experiences. Just a couple questions to think about and never need to answer here but might help you get to the bottom of things:
What might have possibly changed in April? It could be trauma based (abused by someone, tension between your parents at home, lack of feeling in control of many of his life choices, change in teachers, school transition, change in intestinal operations, development of a food allergies or sensitivities, slowing down how long it takes his body to digest food.). Just a few ideas.
Who made it your responsibility for packing his lunches and why was that decision made? Did this occur in April?
When was the last time he had a full physical workup?
Does he need to see a gastroenterologist?
Possibility of ADHD just symptoms went unnoticed for a while?
A new medication that is messing with his digestion or other side effects?
I'd like to thank you for your concern and response from the bottom of my heart, really ☹️💖 I don't really mind sharing some of my answers so here ya go:
I introduced him to a new food and it caused him almost 4 hours to finish. That's when it started.
I don't blame anyone because I myself volunteered to pack his meals.
The last time was a really long time ago — about 3 years ago.
I don't think so, but I genuinely don't know at this point 😵💫
And no he hasn't had a new medication.
Once again, thank you really for the time you took to type these out. I hope you don't mind me sharing my answers too 🥹
