DOG OF THE DAY

This is the Czechoslovakian Vlcak, or the czechosolvakian wolf dog!

This medium to large sized breed was bred in Czechoslovakia to work on border patrol in the 1950's. Their bloodlines consist of around 6.25% wolf, and 93.75 German Shepherd. You can definitely see the German shepherd in its features, especially the head shape and largeness of the ears. Wolf dogs are already quite rare. this breed can be more commonly found in the UK and America, almost always with a job/purpose.

Because these dogs are stronger descendants of wolves, their temperaments can be difficult to handle as the wolf ancestor obviously did not have a fully domesticated personality. They are known to be independent, loyal, active, and very intelligent. While they are extremely affectionate with family, and can do well with kids and other pets, its important to remember that some of these dogs may not be suited for the family life.

Training for these dogs is a must, however they are very willful, and would require an equally strong willed handler. Training can be difficult when the dog is not, or does not feel motivated. Constant and early training is a must as well, however its also important to switch it up a little bit, as the Czechoslovakian Vlack can be easily bored and tends to not be a fan of consistent routine.

Although this dog has extremely high energy, they are not always on the go and wont always be begging to play. they may play when you want to, but with their self willed personality they may or may not play. enrichment and toys are always good to have on hand though. The dog is not open to strangers, and is a vigilante watchdog, hence why they were used as a border patrol Canine. This breed is not at all recommended for new owners, and would not be suited for the apartment life, or long periods of time indoors.

As most dog breeds do, some come with a higher chance of diseases, illness, disorders exc. The Czechoslovakian wolf  is a relatively healthy dog when given the right living conditions, but tend to be prone to Hip Dysplasia (common in dogs, occurs when the hip joint has not developed properly and the bone does not sit properly in the socket) Degenerative Meylopathy (a disease that affects the spinal chord causing loss of coordination and muscle weakness) Pituitary Dwarfism (a rare inherited trait that causes dwarfism in a dog (basically midget dog)) as well as heart/cardiac issues can occur. 

Its important to remember that all dogs are different, and aside from basic needs of all dogs, each breed has personalized needs. these dogs are intelligent and would require a bit of mental stimulation, and extra training time compared to other more evenly tempered breeds. They need an experienced owner who can commit themselves to even the hard parts of this dog. its important to remember if any dog's needs are not met depression could arise. Depressed dogs tend to appear bored, prefer to not listen to handlers/owners, and can develop behavior disorders such as barking, digging holes, or getting reckless or easily excited around people. 

remember, having a dog is not always a walk in the park. health issues should be expected and prepared for, as well as being aware of potential behavior issues and how to fix them is always important. if your dog has behavior issues, know that its not the dogs fault. it could be old habits from ex owners or things that you as their owner have failed to teach them or do with them :) 

Be sure to always do your research before getting a dog and its breed to be sure that it has the potential to be happy in your current living situation. be sure to not get a dog just because you think its cute. prepare yourself, and see what breeds could match your lifestyle!

WHAT ARE PUPPY MILLS AND WHY SHOULD THEY BE STOPPED

on this forum we have spoken a bit about breeders. nothing is wrong with puppy breeders! that is until it becomes inhumane or harmful to the dogs being bred and the puppies. 

Most people have heard of a Puppy Mill. some people may however be naive to the true horrors of what a puppy mill really is. There are an estimated 10,000 Puppy mills in JUST America. Puppy mills are typically made up of typically hundreds- sometimes thousands of dogs crammed into small, unsanitary cages for one purpose. to produce puppies. Its okay to buy dogs just for the purpose of making profit for puppies, however when you only take care of the most basic needs, this becomes inhumane. 

so many dogs are bred here. the female forcibly bred with (typically a random male, sometimes purebred) and gives birth to puppies. no heath precautions before and after breeding are ever taken, making it so not only is it typical for the parents and puppies to have health problems, but also sometimes deformities, behavior disorders, and so many more problems. Most dogs in puppy mills are fed, watered, and that is the end of caring for the dogs. many suffer from malnutrition due to an insufficient diet and their water is usually contaminated or unchanged for long periods of time. they typically aren't let out of the cage, which usually causes spinal problems as well as other health issues. 


Many dogs will be bred over and over again, until they are no longer able to produce. they are usually not retired, and are typically discarded as if they were not a living, feeling, breathing creature. But what can you do to help stop puppy mills? first of all, if you know somebody, expose them. you can also donate money to help stop puppy mills. no dog deserves to start life in these conditions, and no dog deserves to not even live their lives properly. there are many people active in the attempt to stop puppy mills. you to can be a part of that, and all it takes is spreading the word. :D

this is the Ibizan Hound. 

This medium breed was originally bred as a sight hound, and for the purpose of hunting small game, mainly rabbits. The hound is still used for this purpose in Spain and other countries around the world.  The Ibizan hound is a very old dog, estimated to have been bred around 3400 BC. Remains of the hound have been found in the tombs of ancient Pharaohs dating as far back as 3100 BC. on top of this they were taken to the Balearic islands and preserved as a purebred for an estimated 2,000 years. 

The Ibizan hound does great as a family dog, known to be extremely "lovey dovey" affectionate with family, good with kids and great with other pets and dogs. They have some watchdog tendencies, and are somewhat open to strangers. They have high energy, love to play, but also have high mental stimulation needs. because of their prey drive they can sometimes run off, they can also leap on average 6 feet from a standstill, so a higher fence could also be needed. 

As a very adaptable dog breed, apartment living would be okay for this pup as long as their exercise and energy needs are met. This breed is highly intelligent, however their sometimes stubborn attitude can make training a little difficult. They also have two different coat types, the smooth as you've seen thus far, and a wire haired coat type. their coat care can differ depending on the type of coat your pup has, however both coats are relatively low maintenance

The Ibizan Hound is a relatively healthy dog when given the right living conditions, but tend to be prone to Hip Dysplasia (common in dogs, occurs when the hip joint has not developed properly and the bone does not sit properly in the socket) different types of eye diseases, Autoimmune Thyroiditis (the most common type of hypothyroidism in dogs, (a dissused infiltration of lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell) plasma cells, (an immunity cell that helps crate antibodies) and macrophages (another white blood cell that kills, and gets rid of bad cell bodies (germs exc) withen your body)) and deafness are among some of the health issues that can occur. 

Its important to remember that all dogs are different, and aside from basic needs of all dogs, each breed has personalized needs. these dogs are intelligent and would require a bit of mental stimulation. These dogs have extremely high energy, and would require at least 2 - 3 hours of exercise and play each day. its important to remember if any dog's needs are not met depression could arise. Depressed dogs tend to appear bored, prefer to not listen to handlers/owners, and can develop behavior disorders such as barking, digging holes, or getting reckless or easily excited around people.

I've been meaning to post pictures of my loves here. I have 2 dogs, Sébastion and jerzee. Sébastion is a 70 lb Rottweiler mix. He is 6 years old, and he has slo, or basically lupus. He is currently very stressed by the super bowl and is in my lap panting and squirming if he doesn't get pets. 

Jerzee is 3, he is a hound mix. He is my love bug and he is crazy.

Everyone, weve all been waiting for this. meet the Hovawart

This large dog breed is one of the many that come from Germany. Bred in the middle ages to guard flocks, they have thick bones and a good amount of energy. These dogs are known to have a good nose and are active in search and rescue, as well as serving as therapy dogs. This dog is rare, with around 20,000 dogs worldwide. 

The Hovawart has a big personality, as well as extremely intelligent and versatile. these dogs are very open to strangers, but are also very protective over family too. known to build very tight bonds to family, they make a very good family dog with their affectionate personality and friendliness to children and other pets. 

This dog would do poorly in the apartment life, and should not be raised in confined spaces. they also are not a great choice to first time owners, however would make a superb choice for experienced owners who know whats in store and can give the dog what it needs.
