How do you feel about your name?

Hey all,

So I realize this may seem like a weird question, but seeing as a large part of our identities are tied to our names, I thought I would ask. :)

For myself, I'm...used to my name certainly and identify with it on the basis that I've had it all my life. However, I also have somewhat of a negative association with my name as I never really liked it as a kid. This may or may not have something to do with hearing it yelled consistently while I was growing up. 😅

So yeah, how do you all feel about your given names?

I love my name . I’m named after my Gran and my Aunt so it’s a family name.

@Margiewm

That is really awesome!!

I don't know what it's like personally, but I think that having a cherished and beloved family name is a wonderful legacy to carry on throughout your life. :)

i think it’s pretty but I was abused as a kid and sometimes I don’t like that I bear the name they give me. What’s really bad is my surname, I HATE it, because I share it with the father who abused me

For what it's worth, I get it--on both fronts.

A lot of my recovery work has been trying to disassociate my name with my past while associating it with who I am now.

My name pronounce so common, but it uniquely written. Never understood why my name is so sounded so common like you can hear it one among ten until my parent told me, name that given by them, it has meaning, blessing and hope.

So, I do like my name ^^

My name means light and directly correlates to the name of my country, however, it is very common. I think I would like to have a weirder name!

@classicalmusiclover

For what it's worth, your given name sounds pretty cool to me anyway!!

But yeah, you mentioned possibly wanting a weirder name. In that regard, are there names that you have thought of already? :)

I don’t like my name very much 😮 even though it can be used as a boys and a girls name, it’s kinda a common name and is way more popular with girls, and me becoming non-binary the other day, I’d rather be known by my alias lmaoo

i mean, Lake doesn’t exactly have any gender attached to it 😌

@emotionalTalker2260

Lake definitely seems like a uniquely cool name to me.

And going off of what you said, would you say that having a name that isn't really associated with a gender is important to you? :)

I don't like my name...it kinda doesn't suit me but people say it does.

@emotionalShade4520

I can certainly identify with this; when people say that my name suits me, it kinda makes me feel gross. Not so much because of them, but because of my parents who gave me this name.

It really has been interesting navigating through life with a name that resonates with a lot of people in my life, but no so much with myself.

@MrMarino

Would it be fair to say that you've come to a sort of acceptance of your name? I know for me, I feel like I have. Whenever I think of legally changing my name, I think of all of the paperwork involved in the process, and just the fact that so many people have called me by my given name for 30 + years.

@RiordanS

It sounds like maybe your name has been something of a grower for you, in that aspect. And I would imagine that there is something uniquely individual about having a name that no one else really shares :)

I have mixed feelings about it. It's kinda beautiful and gives a lot of space for short vers but there's also a lot of stereotipes about people having this name. This is kinda easy to ignore though.

On personal level it's hard to relate to it as to MY name. It has a story actually. My mom choosed the name and I should be named differently. Since she was recovering after delivering me it was dad's task to file the paperwork. And at the last second he's decided to give me another name without talking to her. There was no scandal or whatever, mom somehow likes the name but there were a lot of situations when strangers of friends of family (who DIDN'T KNOW about this story) refers to me by name choosed by her. So basically I can't relate to both and prefer nicknames.

Wow!!

I have to say that yours is a story, in regards to names, that I really haven't ever heard of before. But I can totally why, in your case, you would prefer nicknames.

Do you have a favorite nickname for yourself?

Interesting prompt. For me personally I always thought my name was just way too basic of a name compared to the really cool names that my friends seem to have. Like it's named after a profession so it's not really exciting haha.

I can totally see where you're coming from.

As for my name, it basically just corresponds to a direction, so I'm decidedly "meh" towards its meaning, haha.
