In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, I wanted to go over the Hispanic Women that have made a profound difference for the Women of today. <3 

1. Ellen Ochoa, She was the first Hispanic woman to travel outer space in April 8th,1993. She was aboard the shuttle for 9 whole days. She conducted research on outer space, and the Earth's ozone layer. She logged over 1,000 hours and became a director at the Johnson Space Center in 2013. 

2. Joan Baez, She was the singer of the infamous song "We shall overcome", she sang this song at a march in 1963 for civil rights. She was a natural spokesperson, and unforgettable woman.

3. Dolores Huerta, She was a hard worker, and dedicated woman. She created the United Farm Workers in 1965.

4. Selena Quintanilla,  She was the most beloved Tejano singer that brought vibrance to the stage with her presence, and compassionate spirit. She won a Grammy in 1993, and Gold Record in 1994 for her song, "Amor Prohibido" which translates to Prohibited Love in English. She also had other songs, and held wide recognition. 

5. Sylvia Rivera, she was Venezuelan Puerto Rican trans woman making LGBTQ+ movements. She even stood aside Marsha P. Johnson. She also started the STAR organization in 1970s in New York. 

6. Ann Mendieta, She was a refugee made over 200 pieces of artwork using spiritualism, and knowledge. She was widely known for her artwork, and how it drew people in. 

7. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, She was first Latina senate to serve in the US House Representatives, and first to sit in with Congress. She was the first to continue to hold a chair even after retirement. She was a member of Congress for 47 yrs. 

8. Julia de Burgos, She was a success poet that lived in Carolina, Puerto Rico in 1914. She made her way to the U.S in 1930s, and her poems created celebration of Puerto Rico, love for ones traditional roots. She stood brave for those after her as a strong feminist, and poetry writer.

As a Puerto Rican Dominican woman, I take pride in the roots that that fellow women embrace. As women, we deserve to be recognized for our efforts, and that is why I shined the light on them today!
