The Link between Emotional Support Dogs and Stress Management

Our canine friends can detect anxiety and panic attacks by sensing when our stress-hormone levels rise.

Dogs Have an Inner Sense of How to Help

Whether it’s children, adults, or veterans struggling with a mental health condition, trauma, or grief, emotional support dogs seem to have an inherent knowledge of how to provide emotional support when their owner is in need, explains veterinarian Karen Becker.

She gives the example of a dog paired with a veteran struggling with PTSD with panic attacks and nightmares. Although the dog was not specifically trained to help in the event of such an attack, in the moment, the dog instinctively knew just what to do.

Dogs Are Able to Sense Cortisol Changes

In this case, the dog was able to sense the anxiety and panic attack because the veteran’s cortisol levels (the stress hormone) rose—a signal the dog’s owner was in distress. Sensitivity to the rise in cortisol and the ability to respond to the increase is something that is innate in correctly bred and properly socialized dogs, says Dr. Becker. They automatically feel the “need to comfort a member of the pack

@pamharley003 this is heartwarming... I used to have dogs when I was a teen. One time I walked to a grocery shop with my 2 dogs. One was my fav because he's so warm to people and although the other one's character was cold and distant, i cared for him regardless.

There was a huge doberman on my way to the shop, and felt like he's trying to scare me. Well, he succeeded, I was so scared but I kept walking with my shaking legs lol

My fav, ran back home. The cold one, stick by me and walked closer as if he was prepared for any attacks.

Reading this, I suppose he felt my cortisol level raised. Thanks for the post Pam 💜

**Do our furry friends help calm us down when under any types of stress ?

All I can say to this is YES, MOST DEFINITELY!....Mine always senses when I'm under stress of some sort. And he certainly knows what to do to comfort me during those times. Just by being there and letting me know in his own "doggie way" that he's there for me.~ Dogs are awesome yes
