My personality has been changing a lot from being emotional, passionate, and caring to a more rational thinking person.. is that normal? Or it is a defensive mechanism as i feel?

Hello!

Hmm. This is an interesting question.

Since I am not a professional, I wouldn't be able to say.

However, you know yourself best!

Maybe you can do some research and see a provider to get an expert opinion<3🌺🌿

Have you recently gone through a major life change?

My personality has been changing quite a lot lately, but that’s due to going through major life events and traumatic experiences, and well, aging.

I flip-flop a lot from being a complete doormat, to a hard-ass who can be cocky, back to being passive and kind, then to someone who’s assertive who knows how to set her boundaries, but still humble. It’s kind of a lot of trial and error… to see what works for you best in life and seeing who YOU want to be.

I think there may be some “core” personality traits that don’t necessarily change, but just evolve/mature after some time.

Someone’s cockiness might turn into confidence.

Someone’s kind trait might end up becoming a doormat…

To answer your question though, I think it’s normal.

My younger brother has been going through many changes, but still has key elements to his “core personality “ if that makes sense?

@goldenSquare3777 It is hard to say.

What is normal to one person, may not be to another.

I hope this helps some.

Could be both, probably depends on what you've been through. I've changed in the same way to some extent, and I know for me it was a survival mechanism.

Major, extreme, or traumatic events in our life could affect how our personalities are shaped. I think everyone experiences personality shifting somewhere during their life. For some, it might even happen more than once.

To answer your question about whether or not it's a defence mechanism, I think it depends. What do you mean by being more rational? Do you feel balanced when being rational? Are you able to be fair, calm and cool-headed when making decisions? Or do you tend to rationalize what you have concluded or decided?

And to really answer your question, I think you're the one who knows the answer the best. But if you ask me, the fact that you're questioning it, I supposed there's some of your conclusion, way of thinking or decision that doesn't feel right for you? And you might have gotten your answer from there. Though of course, if you wanna be sure, it would be better to get a professional opinion about it.

I feel like there are more questions you need answers to than the one you're asking here. And if it is, a more elaborated explanation of the situation and further discussion might be necessary. And I'm open if you want to talk about it. But if you prefer not to, that's fine. Whatever it is that concerns you, hope you can be more sure of how you better behaving and more proud of who you are.
