@amiablePeace77  What does it mean to you to age with dignity?

I feel like I am not expecting to get around aging but I won't fall into the trap of trying to be a young person by putting on a big front. I had my time running around as a young person. I am advanced in years but that is nothing to avoid or run away from.

To me, that's a contradiction in terms. There is no dignity in getting old.

There are a few words one can use to describe moments when you're sitting on the john & sweating like a bricklayer because your GI tract doesn't work as well as it used to, or when you use an electric can opener because the arthritis makes it too painful to use a manual one, or perhaps the day when you realize that the way you once earned a living is useless because society's changed & the world has moved on...

There are certain words that apply to times like those. "Dignified" is not one of them.

@amiablePeace77. To me aging with dignity is having a safe place to live plus enough food and water. I consider having access to healthcare important too. Being able to retire when one is too frail to work. Unfortunately I have seen many older people working at some hard jobs like moping floors. I also think it’s important for an older person not to have to spend all of their time alone and lonely.

What does it mean to you to age with dignity?

There is no dignity without agency, the ability to take action to change your circumstance. Since ageing erodes our agency the only way to age with dignity is to progressively adjust your definition of dignity to accept the loss.
