50+ community Check-in January 24-27, 2022
Happy Monday to everyone in the 50+ community. I hope you all enjoyed your weekend and you are all doing well ❤️
A practical self-care routine is very important when you have to cope with anxiety. Your body responds well to having its needs met and soon recognizes the rewards of a healthy self-care habit. After following such a routine for a while, the body starts craving for it, for example if you exercise on a daily basis your body will soon start to get used to it and automatically crave for exercise and feel deprived when it does not get it.
Stretching exercises can be helpful to reduce levels of anxiety, bodily pain and exhaustion, and for raising levels of vitality, mental health, general health and flexibility.
Is regular stretching part of your daily exercise routine? Do you feel it helps you with your mental health and how?

@amiablePeace77 I think that I could benefit from a stretching routine. I may try some gentle yoga for seniors that I found or 5 minute tai chi that I keep hearing about.
@adventurousBranch3786
Yoga and Tai chi sounds great to find balance. Here are some links

One of the great things about t'ai chi is that you need not get down on the floor, but simply stand upright, and be conscious of your breathing and your movements. Every session is a chance to improve one's form, and there are many styles: long form, short form, Wu style, Yang style, and others. Find one that suits you.
😊
@InquireWithin. Thank you for the suggestion. I like the idea of not getting on the floor.
😊This is relaxing.
Is regular stretching part of your daily exercise routine? Do you feel it helps you with your mental health and how? I stretch every day since my back gave out. It helps a lot.
@Offmytrack
Glad that stretching helps you. I also heard that stretching helps to release feel good hormones like serotonin. Have you ever noticed that you felt mentally better too?
@amiablePeace77 Yes, it makes me feel good.

I don't have an exercise routine. I have in the past, but then the pandemic came along.
@WharfRat
Many people were used to go to the fitness clubs to exercise but when the pandemic started and the fitness clubs had to close temporarily and people got out of their routine and found it hard to start again at home. Sorry if that happened to you too. Have you thought about using exercise videos like netfit or from aarp?
What kind of exercise routine did you have before the pandemic started?
@amiablePeace77,
1. Is regular stretching part of your daily exercise routine?
no, it isn't
2. Do you feel it helps you with your mental health and how?
it probably would help.
@purpleTree4652
It took me a long time to get into the routine of stretching since as a youngster I did not consider it really necessary but now being older I can see how much it helps to just feel good in your body, being able to bend well with straining the muscles. Do you think you could give it a try thinking that it would probably help as you said?
@amiablePeace77
Hi Ami:
I have not been online much in the last month or so due to failing health.
The main thing I have been doing is getting out to walk when I’m able.
@UberRuminator
Hi UberRuminator, nice to see you again in the forum. I'm sorry to hear that you were not well, hugs (if accepted). How are you doing now?
Getting out for a walk sounds good! Do you have any favorite route for your walk or are you sticking to the same usually?
@amiablePeace77
Unfortunately, my health is getting progressively worse. In any event, I do try to select different routes to walk when I’m able.
@amiablePeace77
❤️ ami, so nice to see you again in here! 😊 hope you've been alright. missed you. 😂
agree that regular exercise helps so much with coping with anxiety. It can make a tremendous difference when you are exercising regularly--on the positive side.
I remember when I was able and getting the most physical exercise, I did the best mentally during all my life. I know I even changed types of work for decades to more physical-type work, as it "worked"" for me psychologically better. Other years, I exercised very extremely and those were some great years. 👍
Yesterday, I did something I don't normally do--pertaining to your exercise topic. I needed to take care of a last pymt on something and it is located approx 1/2 mile from here. I actually walked there and back--without my walker!!!!!!!!!!! Slowly, wably, off balance, but I kept walking. He only went because I was paying $$ on his bill, but it so nice b/c he at least finally after a lot, was willing to even walk with me, but walk ahead, but close enough, so I could be safe to walk to get there.
I am so happy to have gotten an opportunity to just go out the door and walk here for once!!!! It meant so much!!!!!!! My body has been dealing with a lot from that and will be--but I made it there and back!!!!!!!! I know I was less stressed with things later yesterday, last night, and now overnight--about drop dead exhausted, hurting tons places, but so less stressed!!!! 😊
I so want to walk another day out the door. ❤️ If I get the opportunity again with some protection, I will be smarter and take my walker; but I so want to walk again!!!!!!!!!!
I was part of a t'ai chi group prior to the pandemic but then everything went virtual, and I fell out of the habit because I grew frustrated with the inability to receive correction by the instructors in person, when my form was "off." I was used to the physical redirection when my form wasn't quite right.
This past weekend I found a used DVD of long-form Yang style and it seems like a good time to re-acquaint myself with it.
😌
