50+ community Check-in July 29-August 1, 2019

Hi lovely 50+ people, how was your weekend?
We all know - life goes up and down and that there can be times in our lives when we are the only people talking good to ourselves. So it makes sense to stop saying negative things and start nurturing ourselves like telling ourselves for example:
Believe you can do it
Believe you deserve it
Believe you will get it
How are you nurturing yourself with words?

As mentioned in a different thread, I'm employing two simple mantras: "I forgive myself for my mistakes." and "I am good enough as I am right now." I don't try to stop negative thoughts but acknowledge and observe them (mindfulness) anjd thyen repeat the mantras. So much of my self talk is extremey negative and judgemental. Even if it is true, so to speak, repeating these negatives to myselff continually achieves nothing. It certainly doesn't lead to positive steps toward more functional behavior. So why not find out what happens when I purposefully think positive things?
@WorthyStruggle I am doing this also.I think that it is helpful.

Thank you for this amazing answer. You brought up an important point: if our negative stories include negative events for which we are responsible it does not bring any kind of benefit reminding us of them - it needs Forgiveness and moving on. Positive thinking on purpose is free so we have nothing to loose - just try. Negative thinking is expensive because it costs us a lot!

You are very welcome. Sometimes I doubt positive affirmations as being soft and squishy woo-hoo. Not for a serious minded skeptic and realist. But I've come to realize that the negative things I tell myself repeatedly are just as nonsensical. What practical, reasonable purpose do they serve? None at all.
@WorthyStruggle I think what works for me is either labelling the thoughts or feelings "thoughts" or "feelings" and then let them go.
Another method I find helpful is to refocus on my breathing or what I hear of sense. You can refocus on any sense. That then becomes the reality you are in not the one your mind creates.

Excellent points/ideas soul. Many thanks.
