Hi lovely 50+ people, how was your weekend? laugh

We all know - life goes up and down and that there can be times in our lives when we are the only people talking good to ourselves. So it makes sense to stop saying negative things and start nurturing ourselves like telling ourselves for example:

Believe you can do it

Believe you deserve it

Believe you will get it

How are you nurturing yourself with words?

I have 5 immediate goals that I keep track of every day: 1) exercise, 2) be social, 3) be happy, 4) breathe, and 5) say "yes."

Been doing pretty good about all 5. Messaged some friends I haven't talked to in months. Been conscious of counting my breaths throughout the day. Exercising everyday.

And, in general, I've been happy!

I been resting more and thinking more about what I want my life to be like at 50. Im trying to come up with more ways to be able to do my work around the house without having to exert to much physical force because my body cannot respond the same to the same physical work around the house.

@Favor2020

Hi Favor, I find when getting older our energy levels drop and things which were once easy take a lot more energy now, so it's good to have some rests and maybe also think about how work can be arranged differently.

I found for myself that the 50s or change of life bring up deep questions about what we want, where we are rn and meaning. Do you have any particular goals in life or something youre passionate about ?

Hello, folks.

My weekend was pretty good -- my wife was doing well enough for us to go out to our favorite local restaurant for lunch.

My self-talk is often pretty negative; I have a couple of stock responses like "That was in the past" or "That's just an intrusive thought", but sometimes the best way to deal with it is a song like "The Mary Ellen Carter" for encouragement, or "Julian of Norwich" for hope.

@stressBear Great that your wife felt well enough to go out. Great news!

To avoid my negative self-talk, I count my breaths: count 1 on the first inhale and 1 on the exhale and continue up until 10, then start over again. It gives me something else to focus on.

@stressBear I make my own. Take boneless chicken tenders, soak or sprinkle soy sauce, ginger, garlic, onion powder (cayenne if you like em hot) then pan sear 5 minutes on side and then turn 5 minutes on the other.

If interested PM me and I give you egg foo yong recipe. Just like making an omelet with no cheese.

User Profile: stressBear

@soulsings I make my own, too; often it's fried rice for breakfast -- saute ginger, garlic, crushed red pepper, anything else you want to throw in, then add left-over rice, then break a couple of eggs into the pan and scramble. I also do several variations on stir-fry, usually with onions, fresh ginger, mushrooms, and broccoli. (I use other veggies too, but broccoli is always available and everyone in the household likes it.)

My cooking does tend to be on the spicy side.

@mooboxer Julian was a 14th century anchoress at the Church of St. Julian - actually nobody knows her real name. She wrote the first book in English known to have been written by a woman, and is best known for writing "All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of thing shall be well."

The song in question was written by Sidney Carter some time in the 1960s. The chorus is

Ring out, bells of Norwich, and

let the winter come and go.

All shall be well again, I know.

Good you have some things to counteract your negative thoughts, hope that they will be much less in future. It takes sometime to reprogramme our mind but there will be a day positive thinking will become natural.

Bear, very sorry to hear that. I read that listening to a relaxation video on a daily basis can help with chronic pain/troubles by calming the mind. Maybe you find something that can helps a little to destress in the mindfulness library.

@amiablePeace77 Thanks, Ami.

Fortunately, chronic pain isn't a major problem. I have recurring back pain, but it's not constant and usually manageable. My main chronic problems are depression (mostly managed by drugs) and stress -- which mindfulness does help with. I'm only now starting to realize that my main problem is stress -- 7cups has been very helpful in helping me sort that out.

My wife's problems are worse -- she has a combination of Crohn's disease, greatly reduced mobility, and more recently recurring kidney problems. A lot of my stress comes from being her primary caregiver. I do get some help in that direction.

@stressBear

It takes a lot of strength to cope with all of this and I am glad you find support on this site. Being the primary caregiver and having to make sure everything goes as good as possible and still taking care of yourself is a lot.
