Prioritizing self-care can feel strange to some people, as often it is not taught in childhood and often goes against societal norms that emphasize focusing on what others need and not our own needs. However, it is important to look after our own needs, which includes enjoying ourselves.

What makes you cheerful?

@amiablePeace77

What makes me cheerful is reminding myself that I'm still alive and well. I may be mentally and emotionally unstable during certain times, but that isn't going to hold me back in living my life authentically. Although the world holds so much stress, in my personal bubble, there are so many things to appreciate. I still have air in my lungs, I can move around freely, and I have the free will to just enjoy the moment. Stress is good when it's in small doses, but overthinking it to an extent that it becomes overwhelming makes it maladaptive! Therefore, I would rather take my breather moments and be present!

I am just recovering from severe employment burnout and I am slowly starting to find those things. One thing was starting an online meeting related to my career topic. Spending time with my grandkids cheers me up. Playing with my cat. I might get a dog.

@GabrielThinker

Sorry to hear about your burnout! I'm glad you're recovering. Have you thought about or even made a plan for how to prevent it in the future?

I can see that playing with grandkids or your cat gives you so much joy! They can be both adorable. How old are your grandkids, if I may ask?

The severe burnout happened because I have been living with ADHD my whole life and it took me until 59 yo to figure it out. I was doing everything I could to stay employed and it was too much for me. I finally resigned when I turned 60. That and starting ADHD specific medication have begun my recovery. I will probably not work full time again: maybe part time.

I have a 2 year old grandson and a 6 months old granddaughter. They mean the world to me.

I feel your pain, also late diagnosed at 57, reflecting back though it has been a burden employment wise before I settle into an occupation where hyper focussing was a bonus. It has caused issues with social awkwardness but the hyperactive part is probably the root behind my passion for exercise and spot, a huge part of my life. Unfortunately medication isn't an option for me, talking and sharing through Cups with people like your good selves has done wonders for me psychologically,I hope you are finding the same. Thank you for being here.

🌤Being out on a lake with my boyfriend on a warm day, the middle of nowhere, nothing but peace, tranquility, and a picnic basket. Watching the sun sparkle on the water, and seeing the excitement on his face when he catches a fish! 🎣
